A couple of favourites with two of my good pals…

PS: Webmom… I understand completely if you need to delete this due to the brazen lack of decency shown by my son, but I find his dirty little butt kinda charming 😉

I just got back from about a 10 day kayak expedition and one of the new (to me) foods I tried was wraps (flat bread) with peanut butter and honey. I had a few zip seal bags with piles of wraps in them (to avoid having all my wraps in one potentially water logged basket), a squeeze bottle of honey and a jar of peanut butter. Delicious, real food and very compact.

I like this fella’s idea about 24 hours food in each pack. That’s how our work rations come and it’s very convenient. Keep today’s ration in an external pouch so it’s easy to get to, the rest in your main sack. Then every morning resupply from the main supply. It’s also convenient as if you miss a meal for some reason, you don’t have to figure anything, you just get to gorge a bit more at your next meal stop 😉

This kayak trip I had my meals organised into a bag of breakfasts, a bag of lunches, a bag of dinners and a bag of snacks. It worked really well, but much better suited to kayaks than backpacks. I reckon the 24hr is the way to go there.

I’m surprised that fella didn’t have more chocolate and nuts though, as per weight they are about the most calorific food you can get (besides lard, which my research has shown to be the highest calories per weight of anything in the supermarket). To each their own 😉

I’m also rather opposed to plastic burning, but I’m not 100% sure that’s what he was getting at. Hopefully not eh?

Whoops on first shot, filmed myself yesterday and discovered me throwing bow arm at times like first shot here, not after that.

Trying to “dot” the eyes on the last two.

You Tube stuff interesting to play with. I hope!:D

Great shooting Ralph! Love the audio you got in that too… fffffffffff…. thunk. Such an awesome sound 😀

            Paleo,

I happened to be talking to a dietitian about this last year as I was in charge of some wounded soldiers who were struggling to maintain lean bodies while they were recovering.

Her advice was that despite a lot of interest in different types of energy sources (like saturated and unsaturated fats, simple and complex carbohydrates, ratings on glycemic index) the only reliable indicator of what is going to happen to your body fat percentage is the relatively simple relationship of energy input vs energy output.

That’s not to say that there aren’t other health considerations attached to your choice of energy sources, but in terms of body fat, it doesn’t matter if you get your x000 calories from nuts and animal fat or from a bag of white sugar.

I remember two guys being particularly successful with weight loss, one who went to the same dietitian and she basically worked out his average daily output and told him how much to put in every day. The other chap did the same thing with a website that I think was called myfitnesspal. They had some kind of calculator and he did the same thing. Lost 17kg in 6 months … about 37 pounds? And the only exercise he could do was a daily walk no longer than an hour.

In terms of paleo diet, I’ve tried it and I can best describe it’s effects as “misery”. I think it’s probably very well suited to business men whose physical activity is limited to 3 times a week in the gym and whose goal is a lean body with minimal effort. It is a simple way to reduce your energy intake, because you’ve pretty much cut out about 2/3 of your normal dietary energy sources.

Happiness in my life is always about balance. Balance for me includes white bread lathered in butter, chocolate and jellybeans 😉

              Exactly grumps 😉

We got detached from our packs recently and I saw a fella using a shemagh as a blanket out of desperation. It was properly cold. The next night I saw another soldier using a black garbage bag he found as a makeshift sleeping bag. Oh how I laughed. As I froze, haha. A few of the coldest nights of my life!

                Jans,

She is an absolute beauty! I love how slim the riser is below the shelf, and gorgeous limbs.

Jealousy is a stinky cologne, and I am emitting a strong funk 😉

                  😀 😆

Etter et al, have you considered just adding your sleeping mat to your day bag and sitting on that? I regularly spend hours at work sitting still with my bum on the ground and using a tree as a backrest. You can stretch your legs out without making too much sound or movement and you have an automatic back screen and if you’re building a hide you only need a front screen a couple feet tall.

The only drama is that you’d have to move a bit more to get up on a knee for a shot. I haven’t figured out a way to shoot from a sitting (on the ground) position without massively short drawing, which is probably ok with a heavy bow at short range but not ideal.

                    Hey Tail,

My experience with people doing crossfit is that their strength base tends to improve if they haven’t done much lifting before and they get fast recovery rates and conditioning to short, intense circuits.

The trouble I’ve seen in my job is that they can put on quite a bit of muscle mass, which is no great hindrance in circuit training like crossfit, but when they are asked to do something low intensity but long duration (like a long pack march or run) they are out of condition and get in the hurt locker pretty quickly.

The fix for that seems to be to simply maintain endurance training alongside crossfit, but folks who genuinely believe crossfit will make them excellent at everything and stop doing focussed, specific training very quickly highlight the shortfalls of high intensity, short duration circuit training.

It also seems to be wildly expensive, but that may just be a local thing here in Australia.

All the best with your endeavours though mate 😀

Dave, thank you for giving into the shamelessly selfish pesting by myself and a few others to get them on ebooks 😉

I just finished e-Racks and have some new found interest in some animals that I before hadn’t given much thought to. You’ve helped educate one more person who is a world away. That’s an uncommon accomplishment my friend.

By the way, Mike spilled the beans on your road trip and confessed that you two sour old marines hid inside from the rain 😆 I’m glad you old boat monkeys had a good time though 😀

That’s right Mike, safety first 😉 The other way around always ends in tears, or lost arrows…

I think if anyone could be forgiven for opting out of a wet night in the rain it’s a pair of old marines. Glad you fellas could share some good times. You’ve also got me all excited over the good hunt again too… can’t wait 😀

Got out for a bit of stumping with two of my best mates…

30 metre shot at a piece of a car… point of aim was the hole just above the arrow there.. these little supermags are plenty accurate

A wider angle shot of this little Mad Max style stumping ground

                            Big game stump hunting…

Nice spot down by the creek… where the bank is too steep for crocs 😉

RD, thanks for the arrow info mate. Proof in the pudding of a heavy, well designed arrow moving without much speed but with much momentum eh?

Joe Furlong started a thread in the Friends of FOC forum for fellas to put up all their UEFOC arrow info to help other people thinking about giving it a go. It’d be great to see all the details of a proven arrow for a lighter bow.

I reckon it was a brave soul (or group of souls) that tried it the first time! Like the first guy to eat an egg… what was that guy thinking!? “Mmm, looks just like what my brother sneezed out of his nose, and that didn’t taste too bad…”
