in reply to: Heavy Bows – Are they now a part of our past #54957
Technology is a great thing, especially when it comes to our age and stick and string archery, with the right choice it allows a hunter to continue shooting in his comfort zone(speed)even when dropping weight, but I’m afraid I’ll never give up my heavy bows, I have a twice broken neck and a third break left un-repaired, and I shoot bows from 75-100#’s, and I know these bows are way overkill for whitetails, but I don’t just shoot them to hunt, I shoot them to live! see I cannot shoot anything under 65#’s for an extended period of time, within 2 weeks of shooting a bow in that weight, the migranes start again, and memory loss follows, I lived through that hell for 5 years and will not do it again, I’m 49 and when the time comes that I can’t shoot without pain as I do now,I’ll have to give it up, but I won’t do it without a fight!
in reply to: How windy is too windy? #25050Well it is what it is, but even on the windiest days the wind is not everywhere, I would imagine that it has much more affect hunting plains game, but if you live in a woodsy hilly area, with ravines and such the deer would be concentrated in the lee areas…90% of the deer would be in 10% of the normal area, I’ve shot a few on windy days…..Deer don’t know Howard Johnson’s. but they do know where to weather out a storm, we just have to find where that area is……
in reply to: Tell Us About Your Username #14984I’ve been Voodoo long before the internet, it has nothing to do with religion, but with my ability to breathe new life into discarded things,Cars,Bikes,Guitars,Bows, etc. I first got it 20 years ago because of my 67 ford truck, it had been used abused and left in a field for 16 years, it didn’t run or drive and had not one sraight panel on it, but within a year it had won it’s first car show and flamethrower show…..and the name stuck…… I still have my truck too.
in reply to: Anyone make their own knives? #13868I’ve made a few, but I wouldn’t call myself a knife maker by any means,so, I usually use Nicolson files or purchase a fine blade, the top skinner knife is a file knife, and the bottom is high carbon steel, their not finished, I still have to do the scrimshaw and add the final finish to them, I’m making these for a friend to go along with his Elk bow that I’m also making, What’s cool to me is that he shot the Elk that these knives, the stand, and the bow are made from, What a way to show off a trophy……and what looks like rough edges on the tops of the knives are actually fancy filework, sorry about the small pic.
in reply to: What do you like best about Bowhunting? #40250“What do I like best about bowhunting?” My answer…..The anticipation of things to come…..Whether it be the rising sun, the unknown adventure that awaits my first steps, the choices I make that would end one life to continue my own… it’s all important to me….I don’t live to hunt, I hunt .. to live, but it’s the anticipation that drives me…….
in reply to: Solid Bone Hits and Recovery Distances (?) #35930Last year on opening day, my brother shot a large doe through both shoulders, complete pass through on both scapulas, she went 60yds. before expiring, and the year before my buddy shot a 300# hog through both shoulders, again a complete pass through, the sow went only 20yds.
in reply to: FACEPAINTERS ONLY #34668I’ve tried facepaint quite a few times, used many different kinds, and although they worked ok, it was very hard to get off, Went to the big city(Ft.Wayne,in.) yesterday with my brother and tried to find carbomask but was unsuccessful, I can’t wait to give it a try…Steve
in reply to: Internal Footings #34175Dr.Ed, Thank you for your very thorough and helpful reply, I will try internal footings as per your intructions and examples, also ,a BIG Thank You for what you have done and continue to do, I have read your early natal studies and found them very informative, but as I am no longer a member of TG, I have not kept up with the past couple years advancements, where can I find your newer studies?, I would very much like to read them.
in reply to: Internal Footings #33474Dr. Ed, I am wondering what the advantages are in using the internal footing over outer footings?, I shoot fairly heavy bows,my personal bow is 100@28, and I’ve been using outer footed(1 1/2″) Beman mfx 340’s full length (I have a 30″ draw) and they have proven very durable, only breakages so far have come from being hit by other arrows and hits to steel plates… what keeps the internal footed arrows from breaking at the insert/foot glue seam?, and are these internal footings more for EFOC weight than strength?…..Thanks,Steve
in reply to: Recurve vs. Longbow #33464I prefer longbows too, well hybrid longbows to be exact, so much so that’s all I make..3 piece Elk risered hybrid longbows. My personal Elk bow is 100@28, super quiet and vibration free even shooting my 680gr. hunting arrows.
in reply to: Bow Making #27161Hello dbscott, 3rivers archery has numerous videos and books on building many different kinds of bows, Have you decided what kind of longbow you desire to build? I was in your shoes a few years back and found 3rivers to be my favorite source for quality information…I’ve built a few different kinds and found none that I tried would be beyond the scope of most handy people..Give it a whirl , you might just suprise yourself….Good luck,Steve.

in reply to: HUNTING PARTNERS #49815Yes, I have, my 3 sons were the best hunting partners I have ever had, but when my oldest was killed 4 years ago just after returning from Iraq, my other two quit hunting and shooting,I’m the only one left in my family now that hunts or shoots, opening day is the hardest, for years I called them off school, and stayed up half the night before making sure they had everything they needed, now it’s all just a memory, I guess that’s why I hang on, they were the best times of my life……….Fellas, Cherish the times you have with your hunting partner, one day we will look upon them for the last time, say our last words, hunt our last time, savor the memories……………Steve
in reply to: Have you ever considered a longbow ?? #52475Yes, I did… About 3 years ago and it was like an epiphany, I shot recurves growing up, and switched over to a compound, then due to some faulty surgeries, I couldn’t shoot at all for 5 years, then I picked up a recurve again.. I had yet to shoot a longbow even once till 3 years ago and when I did, it changed things, I’ll always have a sweet spot for recurves as I grew up shooting them, and they brought me back to archery.. But the longbow has been to me like a trusted old friend.. so much so I design and build my own now, they’re hybrids, smoother and faster than that longbow I had, best of both recurves and longbows in one bow, I still shoot a recurve…very rarely though..just to remember from where I come.
Dang TJ skeered… never thought I’d see the day, lol, lol.in reply to: long bow switch #52458Indigo, every bow has a sweet spot, and every bow is different, recommended brace height is a guide to get you into the ball park, final determination is up to you based on your arrows and how you shoot your bow….. don’t be afraid to experiment a little with your Brace height to find your sweet spot…. it will be time well spent….Steve
