in reply to: What do you like best about Bowhunting? #39888
Thats a hard question to answer.
I’m just starting to hunt with traditional equipment, but have hunted since I was knee high to a grasshopper, so my answer is to the question what do I like most about hunting in general.
A big part of it is the comeraderie with my hunting partners. Most of my hunting these days is spent with my brother, we both love to hunt, and we we have a great relationship because we hunt together. We didn’t always, in our 20’s and 30’s we barely saw each other, but have become very close the past 10 years because of the time we spend chasing critters. I also hunt with a couple of select friends, and the last couple years have started taking my eight year old daughter out, there is nothing more satisfying than teaching your kid about hunting and the great outdoors.
But I also spend a good deal of time hunting alone. I’m at an age now where I enjoy all my time in the bush and it doesn’t matter if I kill an animal or not, I just enjoy being out there.
So I guess “getting back to nature” is the short answer, but there is so much more that goes with that.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Looking forward to sharing some stories. I’ll definitely check out TJ Conrads book. I had another one recommended to me, Shooting the Stickbow by Camera, I think, anyone read it?
Michael, glad you like the deer, that’s one of my best whitetails, grossed 165, good character buck with a couple stickers and cool bladed browtines, and a well done mount.
in reply to: Conflicting Emotions about gun hunting… #22964I’m new to traditional bowhunting, and I am a long time rifle hunter and former compound hunter. I will still use the rifle in the future, but will use it a lot less. I don’t think anyone should feel guilty about taking a different tool to the woods, the choice of tool is secondary to the hunt, in my opinion.
Having said that I’ve always admired some of the traditional only hunters for their determination and dedication to the sport. Even if they frown at me when I’m afield with a gun…
in reply to: Call it what you will #22558Some great stories here, just brought back many memories.
My Dad, although he had given up hunting about the time I was born, taught me to shoot the 22 at an early age. He was a stickler for firearms safety and taught me well in that regard. Growing up on the farm one of the “fun” chores was shooting gophers, most of it was with the 22, but when I asked for a bow he obliged and got me a cheap fiberglass bow, which I became a pretty good shot with, my record was 32 gophers in a day with it, that was in my early teens.
We lived in a bow hunting only zone, so in my late teens I progressed to a compound bow to chase the resident herd of mulies around, and learned to bowhunt mainly on my own through experience.
in reply to: New To Traditional-Bow Advice #22540I’m sorta in the same boat as Prewar70, just decided to take up trad hunting. Some great info in this thread by the way.
I did a lot of research and finally settled on a bow, a Whip from Montana bows. Definitely not a cheapie, but I can afford it right now. It’s going to be a RD longbow, and will be in the low 50’s. I got a lot of great advice from the bowyer there and he helped alot with the choice. I’m looking forward to getting it and will be following some of the great advice you guys are giving.
