Well hmmm… Didnt realy have a mentor until recently. I remember my dad buying me a used red glass bear bow at a flee market as a kid. That, a few bales of hay and a target was all I got. No instruction. As you can guess I lost interest rapidly. Then was chastised for giving up. Never really understood that. But anyway I got into hunting when I moved to Colorado a 13 years ago. Went turkey hunting with a friend. Guy named Buck from work. He thought me a lot about the rights and wrongs of hunting. He was my first hunting mentor. Then I got into archery and fell in love with the bow and arrow. Sally Delang over at the archery shop has been a huge I mean huge influence and mentor. With her time and effort I am finally feeling I’m getting somewhere. I just wonder where I might be if I have just a little instruction and direction as a kid. I have used that to benefit my son though. Again back to Sally. My now six year old is shooting with me and Sally has helped me get him started. He has stolen her heart. She bends over backwards to make him have fun. It shows, he won his first 3-d shoot. Then went on to place 2nd in his age group and 4th over all for all youth shooters in his second shoot. So yea mentors I believe are huge. I’m so very thankful I have found a good one. Oh don’t want to leave out the guys on here who have answered questions and statements getting me headed in the right direction. Thanks Guys!

That way you have a chance of recovering your arrow and those tremendously strong birds that will almost definitely run and/or fly off with your arrow, if it stays in. Recovery odds very low. I might try it for ducks over water with a good retriever. But I frankly think more of my arrows than I do of most waterfowl flesh (personal bias, sorry). Blue grouse and turkeys are challenge enough for me. Lots of guys like to shoot at pheasants with archery gear, very traditional. Here again you need a dog, preferably one that can sniff out arrows among corn stubble! 😆

David Do you know Ron the taxidermist in Pagosa? he has a dog that sniffs out arrows anywhere. Awesome to watch his dog work. I have watched him pull out several arrows at 3-D shoots.

I personally have both. Both are Hornes. I like the handle of the recurve because its not a huge handle. closer to a longbow handle. Mark makes a really good fast quiet bow. I have gotten to prefer the recurve, but still shoot the longbow for fun.

Saturday was opening day for archery in Colorado. By 12:30 I had 10 cows at 44 yards. With an approximate 5 foot elevation drop I did not shoot. Not because of the drop or not because it was a cow,( I have either sex tags: meat first racks second) but because it was a 44 yard shot. Just not what I feel confident in shooting. I had a gas though. They never knew I was there. Someone moving above us finally spooked them before I could get a better shot. Its god awful dry here even the grass sounds like dry twigs.

I have gottem up to 533 grains now as much as I can with out changing heads. I have them bustin clean trough my delta river bottom buck target with the muzzy phantom 125 g heads minus the bleeders. yea the 188fps with 44o grain arrows that bamboo core really helped with that.

Since switching to longbows a decade or so ago (after many decades very happy with recurves but just looking for something different), I haven’t really followed progress in recurve design. Anyhow, this is the first recurve I’ve seen that appears to be a fairly radical reflex-deflex + recurve. If it works as good as it looks, it’s very smooth to draw, impossible to stack unless you’re a pro basketball player, and quite quick in tossing a stick. Welcome to this welcoming place. Dave

Hello Dave. The bow is a Horne Mountain TD. It’s 60″ amo 55# at 29. Has Bamboo core limbs. Shoots like a dream. Really smooth. The first 3 arrows grouped at 4 inches. I did a crono just for fun shoots a 440grain arrow at 188 fps. Oh did I mention quiet. I’m working on arrow weight right now tryin to get weight up to 540 grains or so for penetration. I’ll be hunting elk this year..in like 7 days.
