in reply to: Motivation #30325
I recently read of a Celtic saying that heaven and earth are only three feet apart but in the “thin” places they are even closer. I do enjoy all the trappings of the hunt, the skill , the learning, the effort, being close to the animals, success, etc. But after nearly forty years of traditional hunting I’ve come to realize what truly drives me is to be in the “thin” places… just to be there.
in reply to: Dave Doran #22550Small world indeed… I just got back from hunting with a good freind who’s an avid broadhead collecter. Just yesterday he was telling me of some dealings he had with Dave and what a good guy he is.
Best of luck and prayers for Dave and his family.in reply to: How’s the outlook for deer in your area? #62468Around our cabin in NW New Mexico the deer seem to have survived the droght in good shape albeit a little thin. I’ve seen more mature four points than in recent years and fawns are common. Our trailcam shot video of a doe with triplets a couple of weeks ago – first time I’ve seen that. Sad news is I didn’t draw a deer tag.
in reply to: Elk Season is only 36 days away! #32213Alex – In New Mexico all big game licenses are on a draw system except bear and lion. This year we have an over the counter archery season for ES turkey for all of Sept.
in reply to: Elk Season is only 36 days away! #31354OK, I’m jealous now! I didn’t draw this year and the forest around our cabin has been closed for a month due to high fire danger. If it weren’t for the ones I see along the road I’d be completely elk deprived. The good news is that it hints at what closed roads can do to change wildlife patterns. Good luck on your hunt.
in reply to: Columbia River Knives #54457I picked up the Brow Tine last year and have been very pleased. The size and design are just what I look for in a knive, never been a fan of big knives. It sharpens easily and holds an edge. In addition to being a graet knive I found it at a Cabela’s bargain basement in perfect condition w/o a case for $15. I called CKT and they sent a new sheath for ten bucks. I love a great deal!

in reply to: TBM's Ol Dave Petersen got his Coues #12791You know Dave, relaying our experiences to those who share the passion isn’t necessarily “self-congratulatory” , it’s encouraging. When I was a young guy and lived where bowhunters were few to be found the writings of experienced, ethical, successful hunters fueled the fire. Now, nearly 40 years later I’m still inspired by those work hard and persist toward a goal. Congratulations and keep up the good work.
in reply to: Question about Oryx hunting… #32325All oryx licenses in NM are draw. Although I’ve never applied I have friends that waited over 20 yrs. to draw. However, I don’t think all units are that way.The new regs recently came out online… http://www.wildlife.state.nm.us/ Good luck.
in reply to: Too old to hunt? #49586For all you seasoned hunters who still roam and hunt far and away places… do any of you use an emergency locator system? As I mature my wife worries more as I hike through the mountains, mostly alone, as I have for 30+ years. I thought it would make a nice Christmas gift. lol
in reply to: pop-up ground blinds #43949Every Nov. I visit/hunt with my son and his family in the Texas Hill Country. This year he had a pop-up purchased from Academy Sports that was aprox. 6′ square and 84″ tall. It worked great for a longbow. The blind was made by Ameristep and cost $120. He tells me he can’t find it on either Amerstep or Academy’s website just in the store.
