in reply to: Paper tuning #24515
I have been paper tuning my bows with a bare shaft for the last 10 years and have found the following (Right Handed Shooter):
Nock High: Lower nocking point
Nock Low: Raise nocking point
Left Tear: Weak spined arrow
Right Tear: Too Heavy of a spined arrowDiagonal tears are a combination of the two. I would suggest correcting the nock point first then start cutting down arrow length (making the spine stiffer) if showing a left tear or adding weight to the front of the arrow (making the spine weaker) if showing a right tear. I always start with two full length shafts of the given spine classes I think I am going to end up at, putting the head weight combo on that I want to use and shoot the paper from about 5 yards. I then make the neccisary adjustments to achieve a “bullet hole” or within a small margin of reason. I hope this helps…if not Black Widow has a tuning DVD that will help and the DVD “Masters of the Barebow” Vol II helps a lot as well. Good luck and if you need anything else don’t hesitate to ask.

in reply to: Ashby forum reborn — please read! #23527FINALLY!! I am very excited this thread has come to fruition. I am one of the many who has been treated less than respectfully on “other” sites when talking about this very topic. It is wonderful to have such a place of refuge and healthy discussion. My gratitude and many thanks go out to all those who worked so hard at making this a reality.

Danin reply to: New Grizzly coming soon! #23514That comes as great news Dave! I am going to be shooting the Abowyer Brown Bears this fall but those new Grizzlies look great! If they still offer a pack of 6 for the same price or close to it they would have been my choice for this season if they would have hit the market faster. I am looking forward to STOS single bevel as well…I am sure it will be a great head.

Heck of a buck and some monster hogs!! Awesome pictures too…to use an old cliche…a picture is worth a thousand words.
Ron,
You make some very valid points and I would have to agree with you on all counts.
Keep’em comin’ guys this is great stuff!

Nice to see you on this site too! I got your email but those pictures of the doe with crumpled Snuffer did not come through. Anyway, I think I like these much better! All I can say is WOW! Now thats penetration unlike I have ever seen on a deer before. Do ya think a big three-blade would have performed like that on any of those shots? I highly doubt it! What poundage were the bows and what range was the deer shot at? Thanks for the pics they are a real eye opener!

Danin reply to: You Favorite Broadhead and why ? #17660Michael,
I have done similar testing with a doubled over license plate and found similar results. In fact, the Magnus II, Eclipse and Woodsman failed to penetrate the plate completely while the Abowyer Brown Bear penetrated fully plus 3″. All were shot from the same bow at the same distance and the arrows were all the same size, make and weight. Like you said, “Just something else to think about when we talk about penetration.” You can never have too much of it, right?

I wish you the best with your upcoming doctors visits and a full, speedy recovery from what ails you. We look forward to having you back.

Danin reply to: The Compton Rendezvous #16936I went to Compton for the first time this year and needless to say I will do my best to attend every one from here on out. It was the best time I have ever had at a shoot! I recommend all who can to go, you won’t regret it!
in reply to: 2 Blade Blood Trails? #16879Dave,
Thank you for rolling out the welcome mat and putting the BS boot brush next to the door. I am very excited to see the Arrow Lethality Forum get up and running.
Dr. Ashby,
I want to personally thank you for all that you have contributed to us bowhunters, traditional in particular. Your more than scientific approach to arrow penetration has been a Godsend to me among others. I have yet to harvest an animal with a single bevel head / penetration maximized arrow combination but I am very excited to do so and see the merit in your research. I look forward to conversing with you in the future on this topic and being able to share experience and ideas with you directly. You have many ignorant detractors but I feel few if any will be found here when Dave gets his way!
Steve,
Thank you for sharing your field experience it is a great help to us all and who does not like to see some trophy photos to boot…:D
I too am here at the urging of Dave and I am glad he has done so. There are some sites out there that give topics such as these no quarter and it is a downright shame. I have seen some “spit” in the face of Dr. Ashby’s reports and it is utterly confusing that such close-mindedness exists amongst our ranks.
Again, thank you all for what you have provided thus far…let’s keep it going!

I am waiting with held breath that others start to realize this. I am very interested for the upcoming season as I have optimized my setup to your recommendations. I doubt the whitetails stand a chance.

Danin reply to: 2 Blade Blood Trails? #54321I agree with Don 100%…place’em right, keep’em sharp and no blood trail issues.
in reply to: You Favorite Broadhead and why ? #40608Abowyer 175 grain Brown Bears with a 100 grain brass insert in the Easton Axis N-Fused for a total arrow weight of 550 grains out of a 49 lb Black Widow PMA. I have yet to harvest anything with them but I am wishing summer away as fast as I can! I like this set up because its the heaviest arrow that I could get to tune well and based on the Ashby studies I feel that penetration will be as maximized as best as I can get it. Gonna practice to make the perfect shot but prepare for the worst possible outcome…Dr. Ashby is right on with that statement.
