Thats only 26 hours from me.
How is the javelina and coues hunting? Roads? Jackrabbits? Quail? Hunting pressure? Tags pretty a available?
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #36338Ive read mixed reviews but when carefully cared for in the field, its apparently quite tasty as bbq and sausage. Maybe our “eat all” expert Don T can chime in.
in reply to: Twisted one up #35692Too cool!
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #35560I’m getting pretty serious about this guys. As long as my wife isn’t expecting around that time, I will be somewhere in the desert next january. Plan to do most of the planning this summer. Start thinking about it if you feel like it fellas!@
I’ll be driving out from atlanta with possibly a buddy or two. Nothing but recurve, shotgun, camping gear, and my nissan titan! Getting pumped up just thinking about it. I need another adventure.

When weight isn’t critical, the sky’s the limit. Backpacking I light to go light, but I still haven’t heard three things mentioned that I always take, at least in most circumstances: 1. An extra set of rawhide bootlaces. A destroyed lace can make a boot miserable, and you can always loose them for tying down things around camp. 2. A little spoll of fishing line and some flies. In Alaska during spring and fall there are almost always fish in the streams and they won’t be hard to catch. Great survival food. 3. A good paperback book.If you get weathered in badly and have to stay in a tent flat on your back for a couple of days, this will keep you from growing crazy. Good supply of TP too. Make it long. Dostoyevsky saved my life in New Zealand once, but that’s another story. Total weight of all this is less than a pound. Don

For multi-day backcountry trips the items you mention are good thoughts. However, instead of spare rawhide laces, I carry some extra p-cord. It will work as a backup boot lace in a pinch, and it’s useful for lots of other things.
As far as books in the backcountry go, this was my reading material when things were slow in the field last fall:
😉
I think that’s his best book too!

in reply to: What's in your daypack? #25635Forgot! I always have a headlamp and flashlight and extra 3A batteries
in reply to: Does 10 grains matter? #25593When it comes to flight and penetration, I have no idea. All I know is that my shooting is nowhere near good enough for me to see a difference in anything like that. I can shoot my arrows with ten grain inserts right next to my 100 grain inserts, and at my ranges, there is no difference.
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #24014Yeah. Looking for 2015. And just feeling it out right now to see what our options are but come one come all!
Jeez, that Arizona regs guide is quite a piece of literature! Not used to that being from the east!
For those that have done it, how did you go about gathering all the necessary info? Best management units? Maps of those units? Camping regs? Etc. these Ga boys will be a long way from home out there!
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #22148Know what the season is in AZ? I read its pretty easy to draw tags.
in reply to: Man Eaters of Kumaon #22089Guess I should have read all the posts in this thread before responding about capstick. Lol.
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #22022I’d love to meet some fellow tbmers!
Just doing general research but it looks like texas has the most liberal season of all four available states.
in reply to: Man Eaters of Kumaon #20949I own and have read several of capsticks books and while reading them, i thought to myself that they may be a little exagerated. After doing some research, I found out that capstick and his writing have been largely discredited. It bummed me out for the rest of his books.
