i think that fletching with straighten this arrow out. I’ll be testing until this is resolved. 2 arrows at a time. Confidence in my gear is about 95% of the shot in my eyes. The last 5% is up to me.

I will shoot the same bare arrow next week from group 3. If it is still shooting to the left of my Center line then its looking like 1/8 of and inch does have a major impact on arrow flight. This explains why Troy would cut the width of the blade at times. Amazing………If this is the case, then it looks like group 2 is the length I should pick and fletch. All shots are shot with my Bow in the Verticle position @ 12 yds with a Bareshaft. I started with a full lengt arrow and worked my way down 1/8″ @ a time. I’m used to shooting 29″ arrows. These arrows put me at 31 3/4 inches. (Beman ICS Camo Hunters, spine 340=10gpi) 360 up front.

Are you tuning every single arrow you shoot or do you shoot and tune 3 or so a then just make 4 more with the same specs and figure they will all fly perfectly. I was wondering, at what height to you have your string nock. Mine nock is at 1/2 inch and im quite sure that is way to high for a 670 grn arrow pushing 360 up front.

The only Nilgai I’ve ever seen heard me comng well before I really knew what I was looking at. I was walking in the sandy soil trying to avoid the catcus and caught a movement. Thinking it might be a hog I did my best to turn on the stealth mode. That sucker must have had a rocket attached to his butt. Atleast that what it looked like when he left.

This made me laugh a bit Troy. This sounds exactly like when me and Bully attempted to hunt Nilgai our first time. We were just walking in it out and before we could figure out what scared the crap out of us, it was to late. That Nilgai ran right through Mesquite, Huisache and every other sticky bush we have down here. Just this morning on the way into town i pulled over to the side of the road with my daughter and Glassed 3 Bull Nilgai feeding alongside some horses. They were about 500 yds out in the open field but they had us pegged. I swear they could see our eyeballs and heard us whispering from inside my truck. They are majestic animals and taste even more so……Thanks for the laugh Troy it brought back memories that Bully can atest to.

CS said those shots were done with a fletched arrow. In my book that is somewhat of a lost cause.

I thought I had baretuned these correctly prior to fletching and shooting. But at the time, I’ll admit i did not know what I was looking for. These pics were the results of poor bareshaft tuning. All my little bullet hole shots were a tad high and to the left. So if im reading right, I cut off a bit to much shaft and caused my arrow to be to stiff. I already ordered a few more arrows from the shop and will bareshaft tune the same arrows with a keen eye this time. So Fare that is 4 arrows down and 3 more to go. Hopefully ill get it right this time. Here’s my plan Troy. (set up some butcher paper with a line down the middle and a sticker in the center for reference, something to aim at. Shoot some bare shafts till i get around 2 inches to the right of my center line, then i will check my elevation and tune my string nock accordingly. ONCE my groups look a bit right of the center line and dead-on my aiming point, I’ll will then fletch and compare results) Goal is to have these pretty bullet holes @ 10 yds out to about 25 yds. That is about all i feel comfortable shooting at this time. If the results arent good then it looks like ill start over.

Now understand, they did have a left tail kick but the point of impact was right there.

So the impact was good. Are you concerned with the tail kick? Was it horizontally to the left, at an 45 degree angle up or down to the left? Does it matter? And finally will adding fletching fix this kicking. Troy I’m so close to understanding the goal here, I just need to understand what it is I can disreguard, regarding bareshaft tuning a high FOC arrow. It seems my questions are redundant at times but it is sinking in and I learn each time precious adivise is shared here. Thanks again.

Sorry I took so long to reply. All these shots are from my fletched arrows. I just shot from 2 distances and figured out that at 5yds my arrow is still in paradox, explaining why they all have a high and to the right nock kick. At 10 yards the same arrows are paper tuning pretty nicely but high and to the left, without the nock kick. So I’ll be starting over again next week with the same arrow set up at full length and trimming down. I finally think I have an idea of what I’m looking for. Would you agree that I trimmed a little to much of my arrow ED? I figured at 5yds id have the same arrow flight as at 10yds.

Eclispe has the werewolves at 150grns but im not quite sure if they are avaliable. Im anxious to hear how they fly and more importantly how well the hold up against bone…They dont quite look like the Ashby’s but they have the same idea going for them. As far as price, well I do wish we could buy 3 at a time instead of 6 at 90$.

Troy thanks, I will be continuing this tuning until i get the results i want to see. The Tail kick was a big concern for me but is seems this can be corrected as soon as the fletching goes on. While tuning Ive noticed fatigue plays a big role aswell. Once im tired i get sloppy and it seems useless to get perfect results if im not 100% on stance, anchor points and aiming methods.

I have to admit this is the most help anyone can get from real hunters that put in the time to get it right.. thanks again for all the comments and advice.

There’s a lot of talk about nock kick versus planing and
What you don’t want to do is pay attention to how the bare shafts are sticking in the target, as the target media can cause them to stick in at odd angles.

Ill try to explain what Bully26 is seeing. Eactime he shoots his target it seems that his arrows are being shot from an angle. He is hitting his target but his arrow all look like someone else is shooting them from a 45 degree angle. In his defense i can say that we are practicing on hay bales that have been shot hundreds if not thousands of times. ( my shots were dead on but after impact the tail end of the shaft kicked straight up) would moving our nocks up or down help?

I’ll be going back to the range, it seems in order to get it right I’ll have to do it right. Here’s another Question for ya guys. If i have a 27″DL, does it make sense to still start out bareshafting with a full length arrow and my set amount of EFOC upfront.

If you were seeing point of impact to the left when holding vertical then your arrow was already too stiff (i.e. you had already cut off too much). Canting the bow only changed your starting point of the shot.
                                Troy

I should have just tuned strictly verticle? Then is it possible to have a 2″ difference in arrow setup using the same weight up front same arrow for the exeption of 1.1 gpi? Here another thing I’d like to point out.

The tuning method I use with EFOC and Ultra-EFOC shafts is derived from O.L.’s tuning method but differs in several aspects. One VERY IMPORTANT ASPECT that is RETAINED is that the direction of NOCK KICK IS TOTALLY IGNORED. What you are looking at is strictly the point of impact; NOT which way the nock appears to be oriented. Too many factors can influence nock kick for it to be a valid indicator or dynamic arrow spine. Just as in O.L.’s method I do adjust the string’s nocking point to minimize the ‘up or down’ point of impact of the shaft, getting it relatively level prior to doing any other tuning.

Troy Thank you for the advise.. I really need to take my time and spread it out a couple of days. I do want Super Flight and I’m sure it is attainable. Do you concern yourself with Nock Kick while tuning EFOC arrows?
