in reply to: Huntmore 360 stool – A Review #25557
Hexman — I can’t imagine that anyone would take offense at your very polite and measured explanation of your point of view and product. There’s different strokes (and seats) for different folks and to each his/her own most comfy. Thanks to everyone in this open and honest discussion. Well done! My nickel’s worth. bb
in reply to: Anniversary issue is out! #25543Only magazine of any kind I subscribe to, and only hunting magazine I read! Still feels like a family magazine rather than an industry catalog. When you don’t owe your soul to advertisers … you can still have a soul! Thanks, guys (and girls) out there in Boisetown. bb
in reply to: hunting shows part 2 #21368I agree that modern “hunting” is driven by advertising. But I will fight to the death (that is, everyone else’s but me!) that it SHOULD NOT BE. No matter that a few programs we may find to be good. So long as the majority, or even one, is stupid and ugly and points gullible would-be hunters in the wrong direction, I have to cancel the whole shebang from my life. But I am a freak, having given up teevee decades ago as a useless waste of time. Hey, when we’re on our dying beds and laughing and crying about what right and rong we’ve done in our lives, how many of us will say “I wised I’d watched more TV!” As my daughter would say, “Get a life.” My $73.21 wortth. BB (But hey, compared to other sites I’ve been on, youse guys are doing great in arguing about Things rather than insulting one another because you dis-agree. Any discussion that avoids that sort of bottom-feeding carping has got to be worthwhile,e ven if I cain’t stay up with it all. bb
in reply to: New Grizzly coming soon! #21358Robin — was it Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn? I can’t never separate those two and reckon I should do some Twain re-reading to refresh the foggy membory! Whichever character floated on the raft and caught the Big catfish! and hooked up temporary with them swindlers what said something resembling: “We only need to fool the fools, and ain’t that a majority in any town?” … that one I remember with joy! No nmatter the corect name. Now ,if we was really smart as huck or Jim or whoever, we’d pour some Wallymart mineral oil into tiny jugs with fancy labels claiming “Ultra-hot blazing new hiiii-techy bowquiver lube, a bargain at just $20 a ounce!” and sell it in them other “modern” magazines and websites and get real rich quick and retire and go hunting! Well at least if our wifes let us! happy weekend, bb
in reply to: My first Traditional Bow #17963Very classy, shooter. Congrats! If she shoots as good as she looks, you’re off to a great start. Say, is that dead-looking stuffed bunny below the couch your first Pearson kill?
in reply to: new to this site #17961Hi Ryan, and welcome! I’m new here too. In fact I’m new almost everywhere. You’ve doubltless noticed the “Bowyer’s Bench” forum, which seems a good fit for you. The primtive view of life seems always to have something good to teach us. bb
in reply to: hunting shows part 2 #17957I have better ways to use my short life on earth than watching stupid boys doing ugly things on TV in the name of sport, challenge, manhood. But then, I have better than to do than watch any TV and feel sorry for those who don’t. It’s a failure of the imagination.
Certainly, this here internet has even worse to offer if we search for it, which I don’t.
Bottom line: I try to boycott any product or service that advertises on TV outdoor shows. I don’t even like Trout Unlimited’s program as it seems the producers have decided that it’s necessary to dumb it down and Ye-haw! it up to attract the attention of that particular set of viewers.
That’s all I have to say about that. bb
in reply to: Public land elk-Colorado #16975Mitten’s “One with the Wilderness” has a chapter or two on solo backpack elk hunting, as I recall in CO, and very good. Peterson’s “Made Made of Elk” is set in CO and TBM sells it, I believe. Lots of articles in TBM’s back-issue files you can find with “search.” Lots of experienced elk guys on this site, who should start showing up if they’re not all gone hunting already 😀 BB
in reply to: Spot and stalk black bear? #16969Don has it close and I’m sure there is a rule for coloration and latitude, but Bergmann’s rule has to do with body size: The farther north, the larger a species tends to be because that provides more internal mass which helps preserve heat. When you hit the Actcic Circle, where nutrition becomes a problem for most species, the rule reverses to favor smaller critters, in general. Bergmann’s works real well with canids, not so well with bears, who tend to get the biggest where nutrition is richest, regardless of latitude. I am not smart. I just recently read all that somewhere! 8) BB
in reply to: Telling stories on the wives (or husbands) #16961My wife has gone from being a closet anti-hunter to becoming an excellent game scout. With eyes, ears and a nose all far sharper than mine, and years of familiarity through hiking the area I hunt, and by studying everything about the animals that live there, she’s become a first-rate woodsman, far better than your average Cabela’s male model type. She not only knows what’s been where, but often can predict what it was doing and where it went. Comes in really handy for old Bullyboy!
in reply to: Still Getting Ready…….. #16959Ah, the joys of anticipation — almost like being a teen preparing for a date, but without all the fears and frustrations. I just have to be real careful I don’t blow out my right shoulder from practicing too much. BB
