Great thread, Patrick-some of my non-hunting choices-
Gates of Fire- find out what “MOLON LABE” means.- Steven Pressfield.
C.S. Lewis- anything but especially his “Narnia” series
Vince Flynn”s novels about CIA counter-terrorist Mitch Rapp- sure hope he exists in these perilous times.
The $50 Knife Shop-Revised- Wayne Goddard- Anybody forged a BH yet?
The Bible of course- I like the ESV. Why do we shoot longbows?- because God didn’t put a recurve in the sky as a sign of His covenant, GTA! Much less an infernal portable-nautilus machine, Konrad. (Just kidding- shoot what you like and like what you shoot)
Ah, a longbow and a strong bow and let the sky grow dark.
The nock to the cord, shaft to the ear and a foreign prince for a mark!
Just finished “Going Rogue” by Sarah Palin- must read- there is hope yet!

Thanks StandingBear and the ABS. I’ll make sure to put them to good use.

Congrats Ray- now go kill a lion! And a hearty thanks to StandingBear and family!

Butts- the best way to roll up a hide, esp. a bear, is if you’re still alive! Or you could skin it, bone out the meat, and then drape the hide and skull over your body like an ancient shaman- do not do this during rifle season! Actually pepper or salt, then flesh-to-flesh then hair-to-hair-get a couple of big Alaskan game bags and wrap it in orange marker ribbon and hopefully your journey is downhill! Have a deer, black bear, and cougar tag here in Washington- none fulfilled but hope springs eternal in the human heart!
          Good hunting-

HalfaHun here- count me in the drawing if you would be so kind- talked with Ed Schlief the other day about Dr. Ed Ashby and different aspects of the Ashby broadhead- diamond ferrule and tapered blade thickness- He said he had to go to China to get them made to his specs as no American company would commit to cost and more importantly, quality control- welcome to the 21st century-what a bloody shame. His new 3-piece longbow is in development at WinWin of Korean archery fame- solid carbon riser with limbs designed by O.L.Adcock- save your yuans! Great guy with an ethical company- read the interview with Brian Sorrells esp. the purple bathrobe, plywood antlers and the moose in his yard!

Dave Love the daypack! What do you carry for a really serious long trek!
At the age of sixty(it’s not the years but the miles) as I walk up the switchbacks just pray-” Lord, if you pick ’em up, I’ll put ’em down!”
Don’t run after the game as you did when you were younger, let them run to you.
I have a vision of all these really old decrepit bowhunters with walkers and 35# longbows- but we make meat with our Ashby extreme EFOC arrows and broadheads!
God bless and good hunting, you lovable old farts!

P.S. Pain is weakness leaving the body- the only easy day was yesterday! Thank the Good Lord for Tylenol, Aleve, Ibuprophen and aspirin- and the libation(in moderation) of your choice!

Standing Bear and Aeronut- Thanks for the pics- I want a teepee! Of course here in the Pacific NW I would have to have a completely waterproof one as of lately it has been rain, rain and then more rain- time to don the camo wetsuit and fish arrow!
Funny how we call the grouse “fool hens” when it has been my experience that more times then not it is I who is the fool- but how bereft our woods would be without the gorgeous plumage and stout hearts and spirit of our beloved “chickens”- and quite tasty too!
Standing Bear- where in the Northwest Territories are you located- near Sgt. Preston and King!?
Good hunting- 1st for the snowflake excuse though!

Johnny2 and unnamed daughter- Those are two photos that really touched me- it’s trad enough for me! Especially the 2nd one with her hand on the does’ head- a hunter with a great love and respect and remorse too at the climax of the hunt. Going to have to be an extraordinary husband for this one- especially since he has to go through you first! Thank you and God bless you and your daughters- Good hunting-

Hiram-Don’t ask why I’m up at this wee hour- coast-to coast was too weird! Anyhoo an excellent primer of basic equipment setup and explanation of various options for the trad archer- thank God you don’t have to attempt the portable-nautilus-machine(compound) set-up! I shoot glove but am going to make the medieval two-finger tab just to give her a try- it worked 500 yrs. and I can see some advantages during cold weather. Keep up the good work!

Jesse- I admire horses-from afar! The last time I rode a nag it tried to scrape me off against a barbed-wire fence- at a full gallop- after my feet slipped from the misadjusted stirrups. Visions of my body hurtling through the barbed-wire like a cheese slicer! Guess I’ll just use the quads God gave me.

Patrick- interesting topic- it intrigues me also. As to “HalfaHun” its because I’m half a Hungarian on my father’s side- aka Attila the Hun, Magyar and I pull a 50# longbow. If I move up in draw weight I’ll have to change my “nom de bow” to perhaps “60aHun” or whatever or since I’m 60 maybe “1/3aHun. I’ve found you don’t grow stronger as you grow older just more obstinate! Make do with what you have and what you can pull- any exteme Foc on 35# arrows?

Fellow archers- some resources that I’ve found useful in the fundamentals-Brian J. Sorrells “Beginner’s Guide to Traditional Archery- Byron Ferguson “Become the Arrow” and especially if you can purchase but one book I can’t recommend too highly Anthony Camera- Shooting the Stickbow- A Practical Approach to Classical Archery. It’s an encyclopedia of what, how and why of our chosen craft.
Personally, I warm up the pulling and holding muscles, ligaments and joints with a heavy Saunders wrist rocket slingshot- Haven’t tried a Bowfit yet but will probably have to get one. Then I stand in front of a Hefty trash bag filled with visqueen plastic and shoot a field point from a pace or so, eyes closed, focusing on the aspects of form that I need to work on- that would be all of them!
Hope that helps- I’ll leave you with the intro to Camera’s book-
                          I am an Archer
I am not a traditional archer, bowhunter, compound shooter, or target archer.
I draw a bow with the first three fingers of my hand. The bow’s limbs bend in direct proportion to my strength and to the length of my draw. My fingers are callused and my back is strong from years of shooting.
I focus completely on the one target I wish to hit. I use no device to direct my arrow toward its mark, save my eyes and my will.
As long as I have the strength to bend a bow, the eyesight to direct my arrow, and the mental faculty to understand what that means,
                          I am an Archer.
Those simple statements are applied to how I try to live my life. I do and I am many things, as we all do and are, but the loosing of a well-aimed arrow defines how I try to do all those things.
For those of you who understand these simple words, there is no doubt as to what we do, or who we are.
                          NOW THAT’S A SAVER!!!!!

It is not true out here in the Pacific NW that we ground hunt wearing wetsuits and shooting fiberglass fisharrows at the local blacktails- most of the time!
Serious tool for everthing woodsy is a Gerber/Fiskar brush axe- best 40 bucks I spent after falling in a blackberry patch on a hillside and laboriously macheting my way out with a 4″ hunting knife- could have been worse- we have lovely plants up here called “Devil’s Club” that are murderously thorny. Elk run right through them and even eat certain parts- don’t ask me!
                            Good hunting

Good morning, fellow archers and I hope your in fine fettle, Dr. Ashby. I always learn something about “simple” archery from your essays and posts. Thanf you, sir!
As to EFOC, I am working on some 2018 Eastons out of a 50# longbow and will let you know the results of my continued experimentation- this is more fun than handloading centerfire rounds! Dr., do you think depleted uranium would be the ultimate weight forward material( just jesting Homeland Security- I’m not a Wahhabi jihadist!)- with the added benefit of being able to use a geiger counter to find those errant, expensive lost arrows.
When you’re ready to return- if not already- to shooting again Doc. I have a forlorn 70+ lbs Ole Ben 5000 68″ longbow that could serve as your “lightweight”! Let me know and I’ll send her to you- Last time, many years ago, much younger and stronger when I pulled back and let ‘er rip, the left sleeve of my sweatshirt went downrange with the arrow. Somewhat overbowed to say the least.
HalfaHun- half Hungarian shooting half-a – hundred longbow.
                              God bless.

Hello, fellow archers- first post from HalfaHun on your most excellent and informative forum. Thank you, Dr. Ashby, for your years of experimentation(not to forget your own financial and personal sacrifice). You shall go down in the annals of toxophilite history as a pioneer, so Godspeed, get well soon- your work is not yet done!
As to wrapped flu-flu- take one feather of the color of your choice- pin, tape or threadwrap at the point nearest the nock and wrap cw/ccw 4 or 5 inches, then repeat tie off- and glue the you-know-what as you wrap. A little slower than regular fletch, but only one full-length feather. For real fun add a rubber/plastic blunt and I still have a couple of golf ball sized white plastic balls that you slide on the shaft behind the point with 4 holes in the front hemisphere. When shot it screams like an unholy hound-of-hell- a certain attention getter in any crowd! Anybody know if they are still being manufactured? Good shooting and bring home the meat!
