Ok ………………. Been using the Hot Nocks with the White Velcro for a while now and quite happy with them.  Definitely improves being able to see them better in the target.

One more bonus to the White Velcro is that when a hunting arrow passes thru, the fuzzy Velcro will pick up blood or other body fluids that will be easy to see. Just another tool in the toolbox when a hit is made.

You can hunt the wily dried feral cow patty all day long, narrowly missing and kicking dirt on them with your arrows but the one that you hit will be green inside & a bit gooey. The odds of this happening doubles if there’s someone with you to witness it and tell all of your friends about it.

Yeah, stumps are great. Even greater though when they’re up in the air………………..

Go to Wally World and buy the helium balloon kit. Tie the inflated balloon to fishing line on rod / reel. Point the rod up and loop the line down to the ground. Put something like a stuffed animal on the line, holding the balloon in place. Back off 20 or 30 yards and shoot the stuffed animal, knocking it off of the line. As the balloon rises, nock a flu-flu arrow and shoot the ascending balloon.  Simple, eh ??  Then you can reel the balloon back down and try again.

Yes, ……………….. I probably have too much time on my hands.

Hi & Welcome .

First of all ……………… How ya gonna hunt ??? Sitting a treestand in the hardwoods you would probably want a heavy arrow to penetrate at close range and leave a low body exit wound.  Stillhunting / spot & stalk in more open areas you might want something a bit lighter for flatter trajectory.  Therefore, I can say without a doubt; It all depends.

Arrow material is a personal choice. Pros & cons with all of them.  I build (assemble) my own and find aluminum easier to rebuild when they start to show wear.  Carbon is probably the most popular right now.

There are a number of spine charts available.  I believe that the Three Rivers Archery catalog has them in it.  Note when you hold a spine chart that it’s printed on paper and not carved into stone.  Everything affects spine, static & dynamic.  Point weight, shaft length, brace height, actual draw length and even the possibility that the weight printed on your bow is more of a suggestion than an accurate measurement.  Your shooting form can also affect arrow spine.   Clear as mud, eh ??

My standard advice to newcomers;

(1) If there’s an archery club within 100 miles of you, join it.  You will meet like-minded folks that can help & inspire you.

(2) Roving archery, alone or with friends is a great way to spend time and get ‘real world’ practice.  You will lose and break some arrows.  I just assume that they await me in Valhalla and move on after a reasonable search.

(3) Keep an eye on eBay under ‘archery book’ for the title Shooting The Stickbow by Anthony Camera.  A wealth of information and well worth the coin.

(4) Take all advice, including mine, with a grain of salt.

If you’re in the neighborhood, I’m going to be shooting at the Tucson Mountain Park archery range on Mon. 6 Dec. mid-morning with some friends.  It’s a stunningly beautiful place to shoot among the Saguaro Cactus.

Yeah, I want to run a set of field , broadhead & blunt tips for distance but with the recent (much needed) rains my impact area out in the desert is currently overgrown with weeds making it hard to locate arrows and rattlesnakes.

Did you pre-charge the black nocks with a U.V. Black Light ????? ……….. BwaaaaHaaaaHaaaa !!!!!

Been playing with the taper white base coat/ fluorescence nock/ white Velcro wrap for my Roving – Rabbit – Romps  and am convinced that it’s definitely an advantage.

Heck, the bunch of knuckle draggers that I used to shoot with at Valley West had a rule that if somebody’s arrow ended up laying in front of the target everybody got one free shot at it.                                                                                                                          Amazing how often somebody who would be happy to score a 3 for 10 on a forty yard field target can bust somebody’s arrow at the same distance. More concentration paired with evil intentions, I guess.

I NEVER snicker at somebody back behind the bales. Usually just hold up one of my own arrows and holler “While you’re back there, could you keep an eye out for one that looks like one of these ??” If nothing else, it makes the newbies feel less self-conscious about missing.

What is this ‘aim’ of which you speak ???

Seriously,  on the practice range I begin ‘aiming’ before I even take an arrow out of my quiver.  Starts with proper body position…….. feet / stance, knees, hips, & shoulders.  A moment is taken to think on the last shot where improvement was needed and to visualize the next shot sequence.  (Think Vic Leach, old time tournament shooting ace) Aiming starts with concentration on the spot as I do the swing draw thru to anchor.  A sense of muscle tension is arms to lats to back; push & pull thru the release.  The actual aiming is, to me, simple. I’m left eye dominate / right hand shooter. My left eye ‘sees’ the angle of the arrow shaft up and down and my right eye ‘sees’  the  arrow shaft straight to the spot plus the gap. Split Vision stuff to the max.  While it looks like I’m holding at anchor, I’m actually continuing to draw, just much slower.  Prevents the dreaded collapse & peeking. A level or depth of concentration triggers the shot.

Clear as mud, I know but it works for me.

I thought about White Phosphorus. If that’s what it was those guys were even tougher than we thought. I would be really leery of a bit of the stuff ‘splashing’ back onto the shooter upon release.  Not something I would want on my pink & tender skin.  The other reason I wonder about White Phosphorus is if I’m not mistaken, they shoot a hat with a smoke arrow. Seems as if it was the White Phosphorus the hat would have caught on fire.

In one of the scenes, they appear to dip the end of an arrow into a bucket before shooting. Possibly something like liquid Nitrogen ???

Still an awesome video. Now I need to watch it again, just because.
