The Old Bowhunter

The old bowhunter stood there running his bent fingers over his favorite bow. He mused how its nicks and scratches from time in the field marked its age, just as the lines on his face have marked the passing of each year and each season for him. He recalled days when this bow [...]

The First Rule: Hunt Where the Deer Are

"Why do we keep driving to the top of the mountain?” my husband and hunting buddy Bob asked. “I don’t know,” I answered. “Look at all these muddy deer trails coming off the bank right along the hard road.” Our drives every day from our campground in north-central Pennsylvania’s Little Pine Creek valley, [...]

Review: AGrip, by Brooks Tactical Systems

Every once in a while, you discover a product that’s sold under a certain category, but you find a use for it in a completely different manner than how the product is marketed it to be used. And in addition, there's those oddball occasions where you come to find out that actually, the [...]

Glenn St. Charles 12/15/1911 to 9/19/2010

A great man and traditional bowhunting legend passed away on Sunday morning surrounded by his family. His tireless, continuing efforts brought bowhunting out of the back woods and into the main offices of fish and game departments all across the United States. Without a doubt, his ideas and life's work is why we have the privilege to enjoy the liberal bowhunting seasons we enjoy today. Glenn St. Charles was the last of the true bowhunting pioneers in North America.

Migration Trails and Bowhunting Tales

During winter months the deep snows at higher elevations trigger the seasonal migration of mule deer. It is during these times that mule deer move in large herds down along ancestral travel corridors to their wintering grounds at lower elevations. It is essential for deer to travel in order to access seasonal habitats. [...]

The Bowhiking Chronicles #090920: Full of Rust and the Freight Train Bull

Even though I didn’t start elk hunting until I was about 27 years old, it’s the one thing that I look forward to throughout the year. In the areas that I hunt, the terrain is often limiting and the low elk densities make for a challenging hunt. In 12 years of elk hunting, [...]

Learning In Failure

Let me start by saying that I do not qualify as an expert in the field of psychology, nor do I claim to have to have the stoicism of Jerimiah Johnson, Jim Bridger, or Hugh Glass. I am writing from my experiences in an effort to pass along where I have succumbed to the [...]

Review: Alaska Guide Creations K.I.S.S Bino Pack

If you spend enough time in the woods, you eventually come to the conclusion that hunting with binoculars is much better than hunting without them. But how do you carry them along? Inside your backpack, on a strap around your neck, dangling from a chest harness exposed to the elements…tucked into a vest [...]

The Cottonwood Pond With No Name

Residents of Wyoming are well-accustomed to vast stretches of high prairie covered with sage, western cheatgrass and the occasional small grove of cottonwood trees, which can often be spotted from as far away as a couple of miles. The sight of this small oasis will invariably set your imagination into active wonder. “Just [...]
