in reply to: Back out hunting aoudad :D #60068This country makes me realize I’ve got 63 year old legs. This is steep country and due to the wind direction I had to come in from the west which meant I had to start a lot lower. I went from 5,879 where I parked to 6,382 where I decided to turn around. Lots of loose basalt in clay/sand made things interesting at times. I would have had a heck of a time getting one down from up there if I got one. Hunting this stuff means almost the whole stalk would be on my belly and slow. I’ve gotten dang close to antelope doing that when there was little or no cover. Just a lot of mean cactus to watch for especially the ones that camouflage themselves. Have to take pictures of those next time.
Found out that a couple of guys got two rams off this cone. This is the biggest. My bosses son said he saw two more that were bigger than this one. Think I’ll spend more time on one of the other cones that’s a lot harder to access and is a bunch higher.
in reply to: Different styles of takedowns "lets see them" #28704Big Jim has a series of videos on how to build the takedown system like the one used by black widow. Check it out here. Big Jim’s video page…
in reply to: Scouting for Aoudad #57743Well went out yesterday afternoon to hunt aoudad. The wind picked up to 30 to 40 mph so I glassed the lee side of the cones but only found cattle. Checked out a couple of water holes then sacked out in the back of my honda element. Had the wind rock me to sleep. Woke up and the wind hadn’t let up so I switched plans from hiking to the top of the lowest cone to glass the others to driving to different vantage points. Saw that the cattle and horses had taken over the good spots so figured the deer and aoudad stayed down in the canyons. Did find several new springs that I’ll keep checking in the future. Felt great to get out hunting something after being laid low with this cancer crap. Had chemo on the 23rd and it didn’t mess me up too bad. I’ll be keeping an eye on the weather and keep going back.

Thanks snafu72 you helped me recognize what I’ve enjoyed all these years about bowhunting.

in reply to: Longbow build for a friend #30022The veneer is ash olive burl. Here’s a pic of the sheet that I got from the http://www.theveneerstore.com/
The sheet was rough and had to be sanded down then glued to a thin lam of actionboo so the face side could be sanded smooth. These veneers are sheared off a large block of wood so they aren’t smooth like what you get from Kenny McKensie. Wild looking wood though.in reply to: Quick question on Vapor Carbonwood arrows? #62819I’ve used the plain black ones and some of the carbon/aluminium ones they used to make. Gold tip bought them out and I believe they make a vapor arrow. I really like mine as they are light and with my short length they get 30.5% foc.
in reply to: Finally back to bow building. (Updated pics) #47187BRUC wrote: Wondering how you do the stipple on the handle:?: Bruce
Bruce I use a burr cutter with my dremel tool. After the first few coats of finish are cured I mark my pattern on the handle. Then I use the burr to outline that pattern and finally do a random cut with the burr. Once it’s finished I go over it lightly with steel wool and then do the final few coats of finish. My hand’s a little shaky with the sickness so not a clean as I like but it sure beats covering the wood with leather for grip.
in reply to: Finally back to bow building. (Updated pics) #26163Updated the pictures since I got the finish done.
I added a bit of brown and black stain to the alcohol I use to thin the 2-part epoxy for the last 2 coats of epoxy finish than put on 2 coats of satin exterior poly. I like how it turned out. I also stippled the grip to cut slippage without covering up the wood grain.
The woods are ambrosia maple with bloodwood accents and I-beam as well as phenolic strips to strengthen the riser.
Here’s a profile shot with a 7″ brace height.

in reply to: The Good, the Bad … and Me #47703Wow Ed you’ve been through one hell of a bunch of health issues. Glad you’re doing better and have a place to call your own.
Take care.

The internal footing I use is 8-32 redi bolt covered with hard plastic tubing and is 4.75″ long. I weighs 200 gr but it effectively shortens the flexable portion of the shaft which gives is a stiffer dynamic spine. It’s almost like shooting a 23.75″ shaft. These even fly great out of my 65lb hard cam compound.
in reply to: Is this enough to kill a buffalo? #30251Finally have an arrow setup that should work great. Its a 28 1/2″ Vapor 2000 shaft with a 4.75″ 200 gr IF, a 1″ 2117 external footing, and a 250gr Tusker Concorde left single bevel broadhead. This gives it a 32.46% FOC and a total weight of 695gr. They hit like an Abrams tank. 😀
in reply to: Is this enough to kill a buffalo? #11981Good to hear from you Ed. I tanto tipped the magnus heads for elk hunting but I think I will replace them with 160gr grizzly el grandes. I had the bow at 65# for elk but I shot a 3D shoot this summer and realized I couldn’t shoot 50 shots with it and hold up my accuracy. So I took it down to 55#. I should have just built a new bow for 3D. I’ve downloaded your report sheets so hopefully it works out that I can follow along with the butchering to take pictures and notes.
Have a peaceful holiday.
