in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #35533
Ptaylor wrote: No need to apologize for the rant Steve. It is refreshing to hear, because most of the time I feel like I’m the odd ball in a group of hunters. At work the other day I was talking with a customer about shooting rifles. He was saying how he wouldn’t shoot past 600 yards, I made a comment like “That’s a pretty far shot.” That’s when another coworker said “That’s not a far shot.” I made a few comments about how hunting is not about shooting, but getting close. Not sure if it registered at all.
Well, there’s the reason I check in on this website as often as I can.
I have those talks with guys I meet and work with all the time.
I love seeing if I can get close!
I have NO desire to shot a rifle at game. Not hunting to me. A lot of guys just want to kill…its about so much more!8)
in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #32597I get upset with guys calling themselves hunters and shooting animals with a gun and giving meat away…
in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #27793There was some nice studies done by Penn State with collared deer as well. Their results showed the same. Deer stayed in home area, sat tight and moved more in evenings. I plan on hunting a different spot this weekend. I have a stand location on the edge of a ridge line near some thick areas. We will see what happens. Maybe I will post a buck pick soon:D
We have had some very unseasonal temps in Nov.
in reply to: Where the Bucks Go!? #21877I wanted to test posting a picture.
This is a picture from my stand in the hardwoods right off a field.

The steel on the tuffheads are stainless…so ya, better steel.
I am sticking with the Kodiaks for now. They are flying great.
I will tune up the tuffheads for my possile moose hunt in 2016.

Sights or no sights, enjoy yourself. I really appreciate that you want to be accurate especially when hunting. The animal is making a sacrifice, involuntarily, so it’s truly our obligation to be empathetic to that aspect. Best, dwc
Well Said!8)

I’ve been a wait and see guy on the PA Game Commissions decision to cut down the herd and implement antler restrictions. I was one of the guys, pre-archery, who was taking three or four deer a year with my flintlock and .270. I saw the local herd drop dramatically and was starting to wonder what I had participated in. But now, the deer herd is in great shape with larger healthier deer. I’m seeing lots of buck and plenty with large racks. I’m no trophy hunter, but the last two bucks I shot were freezer fillers. It’s been a win-win in my view, especially since the woods are in much better shape than they were before. I’m also seeing more grouse and rabbits around that I did 10 years ago.
I know in Western PA, it’s four on one side, as opposed to three in the East. That might make a difference. I have to say, it’s good to see the bucks grow up, as well as the does. Thanks, dwc
I agree with limiting tags! I think too many PA guys just like to kill. You are right, the herds are way better now than even 5 years ago, and the deer look heatlthy. I am just not sure I agree with the antler restriction…I hear bith sides, I am not sure I am on either side of the fence.
By the way, it is 3 up on the Western side as well, but outside of the Pittsburgh area, the buck has to have 3 actual points on one side. They do not count brow tines as a point. Needless to say, I had a lot of shot oppurtunities at some mature 4 points and a 6 point that was not legal!…oh well, I had the opurtunity, thats worth something. I did take a nice doe early. I would love to tag out with a “legal” buck! I have yet to take a buck!
in reply to: Deer Calls? Or Just Blowing Hot Air! #30771I think it all depends on the bucks and the time of year. The bucks on my grounds are on the prowl. I have a grunt call and decided to use it last Saturday. I called in a 6 point early in the morning. Then an hour later I called in a 4 point. Actually I called the 4 point in on 3 different occasions! He was definitely looking to see who was in his area! It was very cool to see his response from the grunt I gave him. He came right in all 3 times. Nocking tree limbs, making scrapes, and licking branches. I can wait to get back out there Wed night!8)
in reply to: My beautiful NY buck #30715Alex, very nice buck!
I know we all want the challenge of ground hunting and be mobile, but sometimes hunting whitetails from the trees is the way to get er done!
Congrats again!8)
in reply to: Personal conservation #9174Very good points guys. I too have been pondering this as well. The area/property I hunt has lots of deer, other parts of this zone do not. It is a tough topic. I have to say, I agree with you views on the QDMA issue. I admit, I was drawn in to them at a show, joined, then I started reading their magazine they send…well, let’s just say, I’m not a member anymore.
We all need to get over the big antler craze. That’s why I don’t agree with PA’ antler restriction….It’s more about keeping deer population and land sustainable for the wildlife. I love a big rack as much as the next guy, but I love the animals more!
I would love to have our regulation/bag limits in PA more localized.
I think self regulating you own area would be great, if you did it right, and did it for the good of the animals and land. I think a lot of people would abuse that freedom. I have come to realize, there are a lot of people out there that like to just kill animals…
I like the Leopoldo quote. I think it is perfect for this post!
