Why not shoot the Bear first and then enjoy the whiskey. Win, win scenario!

        Yup thats pretty wierd.

Had an experience like that myself two years back Spring Bear hunting. Sat on a stump down an old cutline about 20km from the nearest road to eat my lunch. When I went to set down my water bottle I saw something sticking out of the moss. I pulled it out and it was an old brown booze bottle (whisky I’m thinking). Never seen a bottle of its type before, and it wasn’t capped so maybe it was once corked.

Made me wonder if some old timer had sat on this same stump 40 years back waiting for Moose with a .303 in his hand. Brought the whiskey along to take the chill off. Kind of a fanciful thought but you never know.

Thanks for the input folks. Ordered myself two pairs of pants and two sweaters today. Looking forward to seeing how they hold up to a Northen Canadian winter.

Although my experience with Chucks is limited (only seen about 8 my entire life) I find them to be a very elusive critter. Indeed I am beginning to believe that there is a fair sized population in my area, so the fact that I have spotted less than ten seems to indicate their secretevness(sp?).

The few I have attempted to stalk (4) have all been very jumpy. The slightest noise sends em scurrying towards their holes, and I once saw one bolt when it saw a Raven’s shadow (thought it was a bird of prey maybe?). The fact that I have killed any at all can be credited to excellent cover. All the Chucks so far have been shot in small clearings surrounded by thick bush. I try to get in front of the Chucks near the clearings edge, and use the cover to hide myself and hope they waddle within range. In this I have been extremely lucky this year.

As far as what they taste like, it is very similar to they dark meat found on a Turkey. And every one of them has been very fatty. I have removed all the fat prior to cooking (as I do with all wild game) for fear that it would be of an unpleasant flavour, but can’t say this is true since I haven’t sampled it.

Well here is the pic of the BIG Chuck. At least he is big for me anyway. Wonder if P&Y have a Woodchuck catagory?

Do these animals get this big were you folks hunt? If they do then perhaps the ones I have been seeing are yearlings.

LOL I know I shouldn’t laugh but it is a pretty humorous story. Glad the man is alright, and glad the nieghbor kids never ran afoul of the buck, but all in all it is great story. Escpecially for Deer Camp.

As to why it happened? Probably the same reason Elk thump on foolish tourists in Jasper. They get used to people, lose fear of people, and then don’t back down from people. The aggresive behaviour signs are there, most people just don’t recognise them.

First critter was a Grouse with a home made bolo (I was six). For that I was ecstatic.

First Deer with a rifle was met with relief, for I had finally conquered buck fever.

My first Deer with a bow was met with disbelief. I simply couldn’t believe I had hit the bloody thing!

Good stuff. However I must ask, is the beer lager, stout, ale or bitter?

Alex the calf hair does go against the string.

As for a preference between tab and glove for three under, I just got back from the ATBA’s Jamboree and the fifty or so three under shooters showed about a 2/3rds preference for tabs. However fifty or so is a pretty small sample of archers.

Great idea, wish I could supply a name.

Good on you Tom and Robin.

Didn’t know you could do that. Good to know.

But I got to ask, how did you destroy 3 Grizzly Sticks? Heard them things were built like Sherman tanks.

I have that happen to me as well. Usually the culprit is what wTk mentioned, baggy shirt and wind. I always carry an extra elastic with me to slip over my arm in this situation. Works like a charm.

Good stuff! I bagged my first last year as well.

Need more story though. I think I speak for most of us here when I say we all love a good hunting yarn.
