in reply to: Truth … Or Consequences? Article #49491
Last year we had some new folks set up a cabin near my grandfolks place. Until then I pretty much had that land to myself since most folks prefered to hunt from their trucks. These fellas planned on using their legs however, and being new to the area asked me the usual what and where questions. Now I could have lied but seeing that they were actually willing to put the effort into it I told them all I knew. Even got them permission to hunt the same private land that I hunt. The result? They filled their tags and gave me permission to hunt their property which until then was off limits to me. So to summarise, if I respect the individuals I am talking to then I don’t have any issue being honest. If however a person drives up to me on an ATV just after scoping me (happened twice last year even though I was wearing an orange touque), well I am probably gonna send them on a wild goose chase to hell and back. It all depends.

Seriously though I think if it is what your interested in you should give them a try. I am a bit of a broadhead nut and at any one time will be shooting Ace, Zwickey, Magnus, Zephyr, Snuffers, Woodsmens, etc. I just can’t choose. So I say give them a go and hopefully they will work for you. If not you could always sell them and buy a new car .in reply to: Found a Big Buck… (pics included) #42672Funny thing about this find is that it is the first bit of evidence I have ever found that bucks of any sort live on the property. In three years hunting there I have killed two does and seen many others, but not a single buck, rub, scrape etc.
in reply to: Truth … Or Consequences? Article #40654Ah. Haven’t recieved that issue yet.
in reply to: Truth … Or Consequences? Article #40202Where can I find the article?
in reply to: Stalking and Still Hunting #40192I am building a blind this Sunday over a water source. Gonna be tricky since the furthest possible shot is about 10 feet. I’ll post some pics of the build and we can see if it works.
in reply to: Nugent gets karma-lized! #40156I am afraid I can’t stand behind Nugent in any way, especially after watching that link. I guess I can admire his “passion” for hunting but his behaviour is unacceptable. Waving automatic weapons in the air while yelling out violent insults to those he disagrees with is not in any way shape or form benifical to hunting.
And while I haven’t had a whole lot of luck, I have managed to convert one anti-hunter in the last ten years. She is my wife and she is now more bloodthirsty than me:shock:!
I know for a fact that I have also been able to change anti-hunters perspective about differnt types of hunting. The vast majority I have talked with have showed disdain for all hunting because of the actions they see by the few in the media, such as Mr Nugent. And while they completely disagree with what he does, they will often condone or even fully agree with the “traditional” way as I describe it. It can be done. It just takes patience, respect, and a willingness to lead by example. Nugent is willing to lead, but thats about it.in reply to: Nugent gets karma-lized! #38902Wow. I don’t know what to say to that. Pretty much speechless. 🙁
in reply to: Nugent gets karma-lized! #38816Don’t make me pull the Mom card! 😆
😯 lol!in reply to: Nugent gets karma-lized! #38706Holy crap thats a load of fine print!
I agree with you that the guide should have known the relevant regulations, but so should have Mr Nugent. If I were to hunt another Province/State I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking the unwritten word of any individual as law. Can get a person into trouble as was the case here.
My condolenses to any hunters in California who have to sort through that mess.in reply to: Feeling like a Dinosaur…… #38124I really liked those older Field and Stream mags as well. They had a different feel to them you know, a different attitude. And they didn’t have 5 whole pages dedicated to erectile dysfunction meds either lol!
But almost all the mags have changed since then. Kinda seems like they lost their “soul”. Too bad. At least we have TBM eh?in reply to: Is it right, wrong, or the lesser of two evils? #37684As a retail meat cutter I have heard of and seen things in my industry that have totally turned me off “anonymous” meats. It can be gruesome. Thats what lead me to look for alternatives, such as this operation in Mayerthorpe.
I think I’ll treat this opportunity as a trail run. I have yet to kill anything larger than a Beaver with my bow, so killing a pig should help build confidence in myself and my set-up. The fighter ace Werner Moelders once said “The most important thing for a fighter pilot is to get his first kill without too much shock”. I think this is also true for hunters.
But more importantly I am looking forward to spending some bonding time with my Dad. We haven’t had a father/son weekend since I was 16 which was 8 years ago. Way too long. At the very least we will have some fun, and any pork we bring home will be a bonus.in reply to: Nugent gets karma-lized! #37632Not surprised either.
in reply to: Is it right, wrong, or the lesser of two evils? #37157Yup we have tried some of the pork from this operation before. Not from one of the big boars mind you, but from a 200ish pound sow, which is what we are hoping for this October. The wife and I were both impressed with the flavour. For reasons perhaps dealing with their diet it tasted quite different from domestic. Good stuff anyway.
I’m not sure at this point what weapon I’ll use. I had been leaning more toward the recurve but I had not thought that my actions would possibly “dishonor” bowhunting. I’ll have to give it some more thought.
Thank you all for your honest opinions. Its nice to know people that you can ponder such matters with.in reply to: Recurve or longbow your choice and why? #36262My first experience with archery was watching Fred Eichler in one of his earlier videos. He was shooting his recurve bow and that got me set off. Been in love with recurves ever since.
