in reply to: No To Traditional Hunting? #51808
Spears! Wow! I thought getting within 20 yards was tricky, hate to think how long it would take to bag a Whitetail with one of those.
On another note I have never seen anything in the Alberta regs saying you can’t hunt with a spear. I wonder if this means that I could? Might have to ask the local ASRD.Thank you all for your thoughts so far. Always good to get different perspectives.
As far as eating Wolves go, I would do it in second if it were not for the possibility of contracting a sometimes fatal parasite (please see first post). But if I were to utilise the hide, claws, and skull, then I suppose I could justify the kill, to myself at any rate.
Next time I’m up North I’ll look into the Wolf situation again. With a treestand, some meat scraps, and a predator call, I’m pretty sure I could get one within 30 yards. We’ll see how it goes.I would recommend getting one or both of the following books:
A Beginner’s Guide to Traditional Archery by Brian J. Sorrells, or The Traditional Bowhunter’s Handbook by T.J. Conrads. Either one of these titles will steer you in the right direction, and will be able to answer most if not all of your questions a heck of alot faster than I can (took me damn near 5 minutes to type this post):D.in reply to: 61 days away… #39817Montana,
Yah its kinda nip n tuck from what I understand. Problem is they turn nocturnal so fast that they are becoming hard to find. On the plus side, the higher Wolf populations have all but wiped out some of the small Hog patches in the Deadwood region. Maybe if the Wolf populations continue to increase the Hog’s won’t be such an issue after all.
in reply to: Some Field Time… #35386Awesome pics!!! How close did you get to that yearling?
in reply to: Found a point and killed a hog…. #32857Awesome stuff!!! A great day to be sure.
in reply to: first elk hunt! #31886Congratulations on drawing your Elk tag. Mr.Petereson said it all, except he left out my favorite time tested tactic to finding Elk. Don’t buy a tag. Do that and you’ll have Elk up to your elbows 15 minutes into opening day. Works every time .
in reply to: 2011: First strike, first loss. #30775Yah I am a little worried about finding the arrow after I miss, but I am hoping with it being a three blade it might not slip too far under the grass. Either way I would rather loose a bunch or arrows rather than lose another bunny.
in reply to: Some Family Hunting and Scouting Pics #20653Great images! Makes me want to see Colorado for myself, and maybe chase a Turkey or two.
And what specie of Grouse is that? Its freaking huge!in reply to: 61 days away… #18418AH! Better snag a pair of laytex gloves me thinks. 😯
in reply to: 61 days away… #18397No truly established population of wild Hogs. Yet. We have a few scattered groups in the South that could establish themselves if not exterminated quickly, and the government has put a bounty on their heads and made it mandatory for landowners to kill them on sight or face fines.
I use “Wildschwein” because wild Hogs are my favorite of all the beasts, but I have mixed feelings about them running loose in Alberta. Will have to see what happens I guess.
Thank you for the kind words about the first pic, my wife was the photographer and will be glad to read them.
Also a question for fellow Bear hunters, do Bear eat Buffalo berry? I found oodles of it scouting last year but didn’t make it back by fall to find out.in reply to: Vintage Bear Arrows #17919Man I wish Bear Archery still offered them in their lineup. If they looked even half as good as the arrows you fletched, with Razorheads included, they must have been one heck of a deal. Maybe one day they will bring them back.
in reply to: 61 days away… #17917Hullo Steve Graf. A tower yard refers to Fire Tower or Lookout Tower. It is a government site built in heavily forested areas, where a single idividual watches for and reports wildfires. My wife runs one in the Summer. The little red thing the Bear is sniffing is our dogs frisbee.
Hullo Bruce. Picture one is pretty typical of Northern Alberta once you get past Peace River. Bush, bush, and more glorious bush.in reply to: Vintage Bear Arrows #17464Probably a really dumb question, but by Bear arrows did you mean Bear built custom arrows, or did they produce arrows of that quality as a regular product?
