in reply to: Geist vrs Lee Rue III on Bergmann's rule… #60925
Actually I never even thought about the Deer in Texas. I don’t know of any averages, but the ones I have seen on tv certainly didn’t seem as large as the Deer up here. Perhaps the feed they are given is driven more toward antler growth rather than body size?
On the other side of the coin, I can definately see how the browse this far north has its advantages. Even without the agriculture (which the Deer are definately taking advantage of), every spring brings forth a wide array various high nutritional value feeds. And in most areas the ungulate numbers are nowhere near high enough to consume it all, so the Deer don’t suffer from a lack.
Is this the same in Florida or Texas I wonder? Are the Deer populations so high in these states that the best browse might have already been over browsed or eliminated completely? And what is regrowth like in the spring?
But then you have the Moose situation. I don’t think the browse situation is so much different between the populations in Alberta and Alaska/Yukon. And the Moose in Alberta can and do take advantage of agriculture. Yet Alaska/Yukon Moose are by far the larger.
And don’t even get me started on the mosquitoes! Little buggers (ckickadee size) are just starting to come out around here. A man just don’t have enough .410 shells to deal with them .
in reply to: Hunting, Bows and todays youth #59649Good on you for what your trying to accomplish Gigglemonk. I am only 26 and can remember wishing for programs of the sort you are hoping to start up. I hope it all pans out.

in reply to: My first kill with a bow #52427Congrats on the Bunny. And while it may not be big, one can always make the shot big. For example you probably “took the Rabbit in the heart at a steep quatering away angle at about 40 yards on the run, all while on your belly holding the bow at a 90 degree angle due to the log you were crawling under at the time”. At least thats what I tell my wife .
Just don’t go hunting with any witnesses and it works every time:D.
in reply to: @#&^%*$ Bear! (Update: Bear wins) #52044Well I have been after the target raiding Bear for about 2 weeks now, but with little success. He even managed to cause more trouble by scatching the hood of my pickup. While I haven’t knocked him down yet, I have seen him on several occasions and made two stalks. Both times he was feeding away from me and I couldn’t get within range. And man oh man is he big! By far the biggest Bear I have ever seen. On one of my sightings I saw him walk just under a overhanging Spruce bough, and when I measured the distance from the ground to the bough it came out to 45 inches. That would make this fella at leat 43-44 inches high. The numerous piles of scat that he leaves around are thicker than bananas.
Instead of using my .45-70 I have been carrying my 40# lefty recurve. Due to my injuries I can’t shoot the 40# for too long as of yet, but I am very accurate with it out to twenty yards. And with my Ace tipped 650 grain ash arrows, I dare say that I am not undergunned for this bad boy.
Anyhow the hunt is still on till the 15th, and I’ll let you know how it goes.
in reply to: @#&^%*$ Bear! (Update: Bear wins) #34758Well the wife and I went out chasing after our midnight interloper. Didn’t find him (lucky for him) but we did find the target. Pretty chewed up, but with enough duck tape it was returned to service.
Now when I go Bear hunting I’ll just carry the target with me and use it for bait lol.
Bruce, Bears love soft chewy things. Quad seats (don’t give em to much flak for that though), juice boxes, jerry cans, etc. If its chewy or smelly they love it.
in reply to: Wood arrow specs #33647Currently shooting a center shot reflex/deflex longbow that weighs in at 35# @ 28″.
My draw is exactly 28″.
Arrows are POC 40-45 spine at a 30″ length, and weigh around 450 grains (give or take 15 or so).
Feathers are 3-4.5″ parabolic.
Point wieght is 125-150 grains. Broadheads of choice are Zwickey Eskimos and Wensel Woodsmans. Both fly perfect.
Arrows are made by 3 Rivers (pics of them on their site)
Shoot like darts, and penetrate quite well on the small game I hunt with it. Been able to knock down a gopher, squirrel and two beavers with it in 2012.
in reply to: Ebay bow redo #29592This thread is looking good, can’t wait to see how it ends.
in reply to: Wisconsin deer politics #28907Pheew, glad to hear things may not/will not turn out as that article suggests. I’ll admit my knowledge of my Southern neighbors isn’t what it should be, but even I knew of the strong Deer hunting tradition in Wisconsin. And the thought of those ideals and traditions bowing beneath the almighty dollar was enough to make me gag.
But it does seem worrying that Mr. Kroll has even been given an advisory position, considering his views on the current wildlife management programs and public access.
in reply to: Wisconsin deer politics #28685HOLY CRAP!!! How in the hell did people like that get the vote! I hope the good people of Wisconsin make their feelings known about these lack-witted proposals before its too late. I mean where does a person get off calling the freedom to hunt on public land “the last bastion of communism”! Yeeesh!!!
in reply to: How many bows do you have? #27691I have owned a fair few bows, but before getting a new one I always sell my current one. As of right now I have a right handed Storm Creek R/D longbow (35# @ 28″) and a left handed Samick Volcano recurve (40# @ 28″), both of which I shoot on a regular basis. Love them both and don’t plan on getting rid of either, escpecially since they both prefer the same 40/45 spine woodies.
in reply to: My kind of bowhunting #27681Thanks Mr.Conrads for the great article. I hope your new freezer is holding up well.
in reply to: what do your arrows cost? #24803Too damn much! 😆
All kidding aside my average dozen goes about $180 with shipping and heads. But good wood is gonna cost yah and the Deer deserve the best.
in reply to: Hunting Bigfoot in Texas #22465Oh and is it true you have seen a Bigfoot Mr. Peterson? Which book of yours was this story included in?
in reply to: Hunting Bigfoot in Texas #22463Hhmm Bigfeet in Texas eh…
Would think that with the heat down there he would have to be thin skinned and possibly hairless. Might be hard to tell the difference between these Bigfeet and say a 7 foot nudist. Definately have to see if he/it is wearing a wristwatch before dropping the string. 😉
