in reply to: Is camo necessary? #21574

The book is The Earth is Enough, Harry Middleton, 1989.

David Petersen wrote: The key word in the title of this thread’s question is “necessary.” And the ONLY answer to that is NO!

I’m with G. Fred on the cargo pockets–to me, pants without cargo pockets ain’t hunting pants. And we don’t like them for style, but because everything you can put in a pocket is something you don’t have to put in a pack, and it’s handy as can be. Same for hunting shirts– they MUST have two button-down chest pockets, one for binocs, the other for calls.

This thread keeps reminding me of a chapter in a great, perhaps the greatest, book about fly fishing in the South. Of course I can’t recall its title or the author, but it was about a young boy who went to live with two “old maid” uncle brothers who lived to hunt and fish. There was an obnoxious braggart turkey hunter neighbor everyone was fed up with, so they spread a rumor that the best turkey camo was a Santa suit. Sure enough, next thing you know the fool was hunting turkey in a Santa suit. The power of advertising. 😛

For a great two bladed broadhead I would suggest you consider Magnus They are top notch. They sharpen very well with a KME and you can use them for many seasons.

This is from an April 4, 2012 Oregonian article:

Starting in June, the U.S. Forest Service will prohibit travel by passenger cars, ATVs, dirt bikes and four-wheel-drive rigs on targeted roads in a 1.3 million-acre portion of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Only bicycles, hikers and horseback riders will be allowed on the closed roads.

This is one Oregon solution to the problem of “road whores” riding around on ATVs with an arrow nocked.

Magnus 2 blades sharpen well and if shot into the vitals are lethal.

I have lived Illinois, Colorado and now Oregon. For its hunting diversity Oregon is hard to beat.

I have the good fortune to shoot in my backyard. I have a large lot and have set up some bales. Right now I am shooting bales to train my muscle memory. The average temperature in the area I live in Oregon is usually moderate and contrary to wide spread opinion it does not rain here every day.

Another high quality boot made in Bozeman,Montana is Schnee Boots. Although pricier than L.L. Bean I like their sole design for the sort of areas I hunt.Your text to link here…

Here in Oregon where I elk hunt I often see bears, cougar sign and wolf tracks. I will carry a 357 mag. Since we often came back to camp in the dark I feel it is prudent to carry a pistol.

I have used this model many times in Oregon, Nevada and Alaska and have no problems.
