I have aquired a pretty good stash of gaboon ebony 1″X 1″X 20″and I plan on some sitka spruce shafts with four finger 10″ footing with the ebony topped with a Tuffhead.

Good on you to know when it is time to get your life straight and your prioroities recentered. And now, turkey with bow…

The mental aspect is process over product. The basic mindset of todays compound/crossbow shooter is that “I am going to go into that ecosystem and take something from it”, while the typical true trad archer/hunter is, “I am a part of this environment, and I will assume my role within it”. The difference there is pretty clear.

I always go heeled, not because of any wildlife that may be encountered but the two legged trash that can cause real problems. A good friend and co-worker’s girlfriend was abducted on the Appalachian Trail several years ago on New Year’s Day, she was killed and beheaded, that won’t be happening here. I carry a Colt .45 LW Commander XSE with a Crimson Trace laser grip (which eliminates aiming in a high stress, high pressure situations) and multiple refills of Black Talon ammo. Modern urban society seems to have raised a generation of sociopaths, it’s a shame that a person needs to take these precautions but in today’s world it is foolish not to.

I have ten only because I collect a few of the more desireable vintage Bears and the fact that they must be left handed tends to keep that number down, but they come and go.

My go to bow is a 54″ Shrew Classic Hunter Carbon Foam T/D. It will kill anything that I am likely to hunt or bump into and although I enjoy shooting other bows, six weeks before season opens I shoot only the Shrew from that point on and only with the same type arrows that I will hunt with.

                The current line up is:

                Shrew SCH T/D

                Black Widow PAX

1987 BW 30th Anniversary Crown Jewel

Tall Tines recurve (two limb sets)

                ’65 Bear Kodiak

                ’69 Bear K-mag Tigerwood

                ’68 Bear K-Mag

                ‘67.5 Kodiak Hunter Zebrawood

1954 Bear Kodiak II Compass Kodiak

                1960 Bear Kodiak triple 60 (1960,60″, 60#)

How many twists per inch are in your string now? I am betting probably 1/2 to 1 twist per inch, which means that you have room to add more so you should be good to go.

I guess that I am in a minority these days in that I have never owned a confounded arrow launching machine. I grew up around traditional archery through my uncle in the early sixties who was friends with Dan Quillian way back when, my dad rest his soul couldn’t hit his own foot. I built bows from whatever suitable stick that I could find and sometimes went through several a day. Arrows were made from whatever was straight which was usually dried dog fennel or holly sprouts. My first real bow was a ’64 Bearcat, I forget the draw weight but it was probably somewhere around 35-40#. I did pick a compound up once in a taxidermy shop that was selling them and pull it back, it was heavy, required too many gadgets to make it work and could only be reliably accurate when shot in a particular position. But I guess what really turned me off was that it was just so damned ugly, I just couldn’t get past that.

I have a ’68 60#@28 and a ’69 black tip tigerwood 50#@28 and they are both are quietest at 8 1/4″ shooting the same heavy FOC Carbon Express arrows that I made up for my Shrew CH for the 50# and a similar but stiffer CE for the 60#.

Lots of deer here with a limit of 10 and even though is has been a little warm for my tastes there are two already in the freezer. Season in my county will last until Jan 31st so there is plenty of hunting yet to do.

I agree Troy, the other day we had a shift from the usual 95+ degrees and high humidity, it was actually cool and dry and when I walked outside. With the coolness and the way the air smelled it made a chill run up my spine letting me know that the time was coming near. Unfortunately ever since then it has been hot as Hell as usual and I’m wringing wet with sweat as I shoot each evening.

I have some pig arrows that I made with purple heart shafts and 190 Grizzlys that weigh over 1100 grains. I wonder what the 350 gr Elk Expert would think of those?

Not going to get long winded, but trim in small increments. A carbon shaft is much more sensitive to a change in length than it is a change in point weight. Start long, trim small 1/8 tops as all that costs is time which is cheaper than a shaft. When you start to get close trim even smaller and shoot a lot. Bareshafting accuracy depends on consistency so shoot a lot.

And welcome to the land of the…well, if not “free,” then at least the land where you don’t have to register bows.

Yet anyway, the way things are going we may have a new “Bow Czar” at anytime just for that.

Actually I own a pair of the ugly five toed shoes and trail run in them over some pretty rough terrain. I’ve never thought about hunting in them but I can tell you that I learned that our “normal” footwear confines the foot like a cast giving all the mobility of a horses hoof. When I first tried the toe shoes my feet became sore because of all the additional flexion. Basically if forces your foot to work the way it was designed and there is a curve involved building up the aptrophied muscles in your foot. I like them but probably won’t hunt in them. I never worried too much about what they look like, if we were truly concerned with appearances then most people wouldn’t walk past a mirror.
