in reply to: Colorado elk herd size? #49824
Kentucky has over 10,000 elk now, they are just in the eastern part of the state, some have crossed into West Virginia and Virginia. Maybe one day I can hunt elk in my home state.
Odds to draw in Kentucky for out of state are not very good and I don’t think you build points.
in reply to: Watch your fingers! #48501I killed a copperhead last week in the back yard cutting grass. It was in side the fenced area where my dog roam so I’m glad I ran into first I’ve had two bitten over the years. The strange part was it was within three feet of where I killed the last copperhead, cutting grass last year. I miss my black snakes.
in reply to: Scent proof? #46985I think that sometimes the deer we see on our backtracks are just curious, or low IQ deer. I have never seen a nice buck do the stupid things that the spikes and fork horns do.
in reply to: Gun Season is over…. #22563Gun season here will be in till January 5th.
in reply to: Success or not #22561One thing that I break with the traditional gear, is that I cary a high tech flashlight just in case for blood trailing. Not many yotes around here, yet.
in reply to: Last minute Bowhunting Adventure #12494I’m sorry things didn’t work out for you. East of the Blue Ridge Pakway it is legal to hunt deer with dogs during general gun season. I think you were hunting before Saturday the 17th. So if the guy with dogs were hunting legally, they would have been hunting small game only. It kinda sucks but often the deer and other game don’t care about the dogs unless the dogs are on there back trail. Once I was trying to close the range on a group of about 6 deer, I heard some dogs running getting closer, then a doe came bounding by within 25 yards of the group, they froze a bit later a pack of four hounds in full cry came hauling by the group. the hounds were just out of sight as the deer went back to feeding, but not for long they heard me cruch some snow and took off.
in reply to: Last minute Bowhunting Adventure #7939Muzzeloader will be in, but I don’t think it will be as many guys in the woods as Saturday when rifle season starts. Right many bear in that region also. Good luck!
PS: in Southeastern Va I am told the Bucks are chasing does! So maybe the rut will be in there.
in reply to: A Hunters Heart #58451I just took your advise, almost:D.
I didn’t buy all of them, I’m just to cheap sometimes.
in reply to: Dog Question #46795Glad things are getting better. My favorite dog is Henry a Treeing Walker, He’s 11 now and showing a lot more grey now.
He is one of the smarter dogs I have had and is a great coondog, he is bigger than I would choose about 100 lbs.
He was making a fuss tonight, wanting to go out (in the storm Sandy) after he came back in I figured out what he wanted, it was his nightly milkbone before bed. If he was younger I would teach him to blood trail deer for me as well as coonhunt.
If my shoulders wear out or I have some other injury that prevents me from drawing. I’ll be hunting with a X-gun myself, I hope it will never happen but atleast I’ll still be in the woods.
in reply to: Have You Gotten Lost? #38391Following my coondog through the woods at night has made me a lot better than I was 14 years ago, and I wasn’t that bad before that, but I do rember being in a thousand acre block of planted pines on an overcast day in a flat coastal plain, everything look the same. I made it out without a compass without to much extra walking.
Now I always coonhunt with a compass, a quick check at the truck and once in a while durring the hunt and I’m go to go.
in reply to: First Bow Suggestions For Wife #29307Another option would be an ILF riser.

in reply to: My New Longbow!! A Little Guidance Please… #29238That’s a nice looking bow you have. You might want to give the guys here some more information to help them give you advise. Things like your bows poundage, your draw length, your favorite broadhead wieght may help narrow down things.

in reply to: Effective range based on accuracy #26338I really like to strech out in the yard practice, I work back to 60 yards at times, it makes the 30 yd shots seem close.
Yes, it’s a pain but, it’s still considered the shippers property until the package crosses the the door way into your home. I had a package stolen off my front porch, saw two sets of tracks coming and going in the snow. Called to police thinking I would let them know it happened. They caught the girl that took the package the next day!
