in reply to: Traditional Expo's #21549
So I have called my go to archer shop here in Minnesota The Footed Shaft and spoke with Terry. He mentioned to me the only other expo that he new of was the Compton Traditional Bowhunters that will be held down by Kansas City in March. Thought I would pass it on to everyone in case they were interested.
in reply to: Spiral Flu Flu's problem #21236I was going to post some pictures on the flu flu’s that I made but the craftsmanship is lacking on a few of the new hybrid arrows. I made two different types of the hybrid that you showed in this thread. The first time that I tried to flech the bottom part and then spiral the top part using one feather and right where I started to twist the fletching the feather would not stay glued to the shaft. The second arrow I did I cut one feather for the bottom part and glued it down then used the other half of the feather I cut to spiral. This ended up having the same effect as any other spiral fletching and the ends are popping up. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the feathers from coming up off the shaft using your hybrid method??
in reply to: Video of my first attempt at a deer #20574It was my first year hunting and I was doing it from a natural ground blind on public land. The week before I had 2 bucks walk right infront of me but could not shoot them because they were not legal size for my area. I went out last weekend and did some more scouting and stump shooting and had an absolute riot. I saw the two deer when I was out there and it put a big smile on my face as I just watched the two sisters walk thru the woods with no fear, until my dog spotted them and started to bark at them, not a good hunting dog 🙂
in reply to: Video of my first attempt at a deer #20291Thanks for the responses it was such a fun time hunting. Hopefully next year it will be a different video on my getting that deer. The video does not do justice on how close that deer was. When she took off running she was less than 8 feet away from the tip of my arrow!!
in reply to: Spiral Flu Flu's problem #12600Do you use standard 5 inch feathers or do you cut down full length feathers?
in reply to: Spiral Flu Flu's problem #12529That is my issue that I have seen with them as well. They fly great for me but no punch. At 20 yards they actually bounce off of the hay bail that I shoot at which I laughed at but its hard for me to have confidence in them to take down any small game.
in reply to: Spiral Flu Flu's problem #12486I must have seen your arrows once before cause this picture looks very familiar to me. Currently I get them to shoot no further than 40 yards with two feathers when shot up in the air, do you find that these go further or do they go about the same distance? I might have to make a couple of these tonight for fun 🙂
in reply to: Getting ready for MI #9335I know the picture of Mike with the bucks its in his book One with the Wilderness, which is a very fun read for anyone interested! Would love to make it back to the Zoo but very very doubtful unfortunately 🙁 been 15 years since I have been and was introduce to traditional archery for the first time.
in reply to: My toes are frozen……. #45502I hunt from the ground up here in Minnesota I have a thin pair of waterproof shoes and I wear wool socks. Once the cold weather arrived my feet would get so cold and honestly the only thing I do differently now is I stand on my backpack that I bring in just to get my feet up off the ground and I have had zero issues.
in reply to: Public Land hunting ethics #62229Thanks David,
I know what this guy did is not illegal by any means, but ethically I think its terrible what he did. Quiet honestly if someone wants to use my blind then by all means its public land and you can do that. Now if I were to walk up on someone using my blind I may ask them to leave and if they don’t ok well we both can share this blind then 😀 I just think its very disrespectful to me that I did all the leg work early season and have had some very good hunts this year at that location just not good enough to harvest any animals yet, for him to use my blind to shoot another deer. Needless to say I will not be in contact with this person anymore. I just hope that this weekend will be the chance that I can take my first traditional kill and first hunting kill. Not going buck hunting but if one were to step out in front of me what a bonus it would be!! Cheers and Happy Hunting!
in reply to: Public Land hunting ethics #61980ripforce…For whatever reason you just sparked something that I should have put 2 and 2 together with this person in the early season. I hunt in Minnesota where you can purchase a bonus tag in my area. The only tag that you can get a buck on is your first tag, the second tag is antlerless only. He first shot a doe with his compound then lost a buck with a rifle and then shot another buck out of my blind all using the same deer tag he never bought a bonus tag at all. He does not call in his calls either to the DNR and just hunts off the grid…I should call in the DNR for poaching on this guy but I have no solid proof on him.
in reply to: Wow! My first deer with a bow! #57425Aww man that is so freaking awesome CONGRATS! I am looking to bag my first ever kill and I am so pumped reading stories like this thank you so much for sharing!!
in reply to: Hunting season is so close #50626Troy Breeding wrote: Wow, I must be the square peg trying to go in the round hole. Unless something changes I could care less when the season opens. I’ve been in OH for three years and the only land I have to hunt is the 3 acres behind my house. I’ve checked with all the local land owners and can’t find another place to hunt. Public land is between 3-4 hours away and some of the roughest I’ve ever tried to hunt. You just about need to be a mountain goat to hunt there.
The better half is working in South TX for the next few months. I will most likely fly down for a week. If so I have plans to visit Dr. Ed while there. Might even ship one of my bows down ahead of time and try to poke a pig while visiting.
Troy
I am originally from Sidney, Troy so you live in my old neck of the woods…I can’t say that I have ever hunted in Ohio but check out around Kiser Lake I know there is state land over there that you should be able to hunt. The only other places that I could tell you are there in Southern Ohio. There has to be public land thou around some of the lakes around the shelby county area. Look at Indian Lake too.
When I first moved up to Minnesota it was hard for me to find land until I got a hold of the plat books…now I know where I can hunt ….hope this helps you out some
