in reply to: Advice on new bow #49795
Find a local shop and shoot some $75.00 used bows until you build up your muscles and learn what’s right for you.
You mentioned you want an all wood bow. The bows you said you are looking at include laminations of fiberglass. I thought I’d point that out to you. I would encourage you to stick with laminated bows until you get more experience. Then you can try all wood bows. The other good advice I’d give you is to skip the laminated glass bows and go right for the all wood bows. Now there is some real fine advice. I should run for office. 😯
Dryad, I believe still makes a couple models of laminated all wood bows around the price range mentioned.
Dryadbows.com I think.
That said, I agree with Steve about shooting several different bows at a shop to get an idea of what you are shooting well and like.
I’d vote for ya Steve just cause ya hunt!

in reply to: Hunting in the USA (Montana in particular)… #40175Colorado is min draw of 35# all seasons or was 2 years ago. Lots of national forest and wilderness to get away from the crowds.
Good luck with your search.
in reply to: binoculars vs spotting scope #38917I hunt the flatlands of South Dakota for white tail and SW Colorado for elk. I have a 10×42 and an 8×40 I use the 10x for the search from a higher vantage point in SD to locate an animal either in a shelter belt or fenceline, then switch to the 8x’s for stalking. If I still hunt the shelter belts I use the 8x’s. For elk hunting I use the 8x’s exclusively. Since your just starting out I, like the others above, recommend the 8×30, 8×40. Your eyes will thank you after looking through them every 10-15 minutes stalking or looking through them for 10 minutes strait trying to pick the best route to do a stalk.
Good luck,
Troy
in reply to: fletching tape #29340Steve Graf wrote: I’ve never used tape. But I have had arrows made for me that were taped. They lasted just fine.
I would switch to tape, except I use a jojan fletcher and there would be no point to it – tape really shines when using a single arrow fletcher.
Seems like tape is more expensive than glue though. And I can use my glue for stuff besides arrows…
If I had it to do over again, I might start out using tape.
I found through trial and error and others advice that a single fletcher with a strong magnet works best with the tape. The only problem I’ve had with the tape is getting the forward part of the fetching to stay tight after a few misses in the grass then shooting through one of my StuffIt targets will pull the fetching loose up front.
Like mentioned in a previous post, I began gluing the fore and aft of the fetching and that has helped greatly.
As for the tape sliding around after cleaning with alcohol, it must dry at least 20 – 30 minutes with alcohol before fetching it the problem persists send it back and ask for a replacement roll. Whoever you bought it from should replace or refund it with no problem.
Good luck
in reply to: Arrow tuning #28251Keep fighting the groundhogs. All I have to chase are the rabbits that attack our garden every year.
I tried the washer and it doesn’t seem to affect the flight. the washer does seem to bend over some when it hits the edge of a tree or stump so I’m going to try cutting the outer edge of the washer and bending the tab ends up to see if that helps any. I’ll let you know.
thanks again for the idea.
in reply to: Arrow tuning #18520Ok, I found some 300grn small game/stumpin heads!!
VPA (Vantage Point Archery) makes them, they are called Small game thumpers. They’re a bit spendy at $14 bucks for three, which is the best price I found.
I think I’ll try the washer with my field point as mentioned above.
Thanks Steve

Does the washer mess with the flight of the arrow any?
in reply to: Meat grinder blues #51285Well then, maybe I just need a new hand-cranker.
If you know what brand of grinder you have you should be able to get new blades and plates for it. I went through my local hardware store guy to get my new blades and plates for our old hand crank. You can also do a search for the brand of grinder “replacement blades for X-brand grinder”.
Good luck

in reply to: Brass HIT Inserts #18317CareyE wrote: Can the brass HIT inserts be doubled up, back to back, to increase FOC?
I don’t believe so. They are designed so you can break off a piece on the back to reduce the wieght by 25 grns. the ones I have seen do not have a rear port to attach extra wieghts.
There are some brass inserts that will do what you discribe. I think muzzy has an insert that you can attach added wieght to the rear. I’m sure someone here will know of more brands of inserts that can have extra wieght attached or stacked up, but they will need to know what brand of arrow you are useing and which size.

in reply to: A true custom bow #55518I agree with the above statements about bow design but you can get a bow made to fit you spicificly but you should meet with your bowyer to work out what you want. I had a bow made to fit me the way I wanted it to. I picked a bowyer that built a bow that I realy liked, met with him and told him what I was looking for and he agreed to make my bow. Now take into consideration I did not ask him to change his design just to modify his grip to suit me and meet a specific poundage give or take 2 pounds at my draw weight. I did have to meet with him twice while he was working on my bow to fit the hand grip to my hand and shape it the way I wanted it. It is now my go to bow and enjoy shooting it. With the personal fit I really have been able to improve my accuracy and I atribute that to he bowyer and his abillity to fit the bow to me.
Good luck
with what ever you decide

in reply to: My 2011 Early Archery Elk season #52745great story, and seems to me to have been a very successful season.
Thanks for sharing.
in reply to: AAARRRGGHH or I've made it… #49191Yep a real addiction. When you finally get to the point you quit second guessing your choice to switch from easer methods of hunting and every thing just feels right, even when you miss, or blow a stalk, and you return from the hunt with a big stupid grin ( so my wife says ) with a story of close encounters and missed shots an unfilled tag. A you still have the enthusiasm of a 12 year old on opening morning. Yep an addiction.
in reply to: AAARRRGGHH or I've made it… #48291Incredable!!!
Yes you’ve made it!!
That is why, I hope, we all hunt with stick and string.
Congrats.
in reply to: sheds allready #38396That kicker helps make it look forked instead of grown out from the main. Thats still a nice trophy even if its not connected. Good luck finding the other side
