Nothing wrong with Rush…. Or the Dead. Actually I enjoy all kinds of music rock, blues, jazz, country, folk and blue grass, buuut…. Banjo music does put a little tingle to the back of my neck though. 😉

I chose mine tradhunter1 not for hunting with traditional archery gear alone, but because my ethics, morals, beliefs and technics always seem to fall on the traditional side of thought and process “according to today’s society”, the hunter part was chosen due to the fact that when I’m in the woods or fields hunting I feel so much more in tune with all around me and it seems to free my mind to contemplate my life and put things in the right perspective.

There also seems to be an awfull lot of Troys around.

I had a burger over seas while in the Navy, it tatsed a little off but not to bad, I asked about the flavor and was informed, after the fact, that it was dog burger mixed with pig fat. 😯

As much as I dislike pork chops I’m inclined to believe it was the pig that made the flavor taste off center, but I wasn’t inclined to try another one to test my theroy. 😉

                  Ok since you asked,

I enjoy family, friends, fly fishing, hiking/backpacking, poking around the old stomping grounds of the ancients so I can feel young and ignorant in so many lost ways, a good book, being completely alone on top of a mountain, a good argument, and I really enjoy woodworking because I just loose myself in the grain and beauty of the wood it self.

Wow made me feel almost sensitive. 8)

Good luck with your retirement, I hope it works out better than you expect.

Thanks for the info…the new bow has been ordered since May and it is to be built in March…can hardly wait! I use CX 250 with 370 out front and my kodiak is at 46 #….the 300 TO arrows should work well with a little heavier bow (around 50 or so at 28 Inch). But time will tell. Thanks again.

                    Brennan,

I think that 300 will be a bit stiff for 50 or so @28. I am shooting a bow that is 51.5@26 (my draw length) using 400’s cut to 30&3/8 with a total of 400 up front, with a total arrow weight of 731 (my elk arrows), albeit they are real easy to watch to the target(slow), they fly very well and penetration is great.

With the Trad Only the lower spine numbers 300 are stiffer spined than the higher numbers 600. I would recommend that you see if you can get a test kit with the spines 300, 340, 400, and 500 in it. I am thinking that you will end up using the 400’s for 50-54@28 and maybe the 340’s if you have 50-54@28 but have an actual draw length of 29-30.

I wouldn’t want you to expended the funds for a dozen or even half dozen shafts and have the tuning process go completely awry.

Good luck and let me know how it go’s for you

I haven’t had a lot of trouble but I have had some, so… once I have the arrows tuned, the ones I will use for stumpin/small game I put a small dot of glue to the junction on the out side, that way if I need to change them out I can use my pocket knife and pop the seal. I have seen some folks that will heat up hot melt and put a dab on the inside of the nock then insert it in the best tuned position, if they need to change the nock due to damage they can heat the the nock lightly and twist it out with pliers.

There maybe more ideas from some more experienced people here.

                      Good luck

I use them also and they are very durable. Plus they look good to. Unless you know for sure what spine you’ll need I recommend getting the test kit first. With the test kit you will have some of each spine for when/if you get a new bow at a different weight later on.

                        Good luck

Brenn, I just ordered the tiger, and a couple of others. Better be good!

I don’t have a trail cam but I was out scouting some new places the other day and someone started checking me out…

I’m new to the area and I’m not sure exactly what breed of pigeon that is, but there were plenty of wallabies around. Alas native animals are off the list for me, but it looked like good pig country, so I’ll keep looking 😛

If that’s what pigeon looks like in your world I’d be looking out for the hawks that eat them:shock:

                          Great picks, thanks.

Smithhammer wrote: [quote=Penntradarcher]You guys that are shooting the arrows of 600 grains and more, are you using wood, carbon or aluminum? Alex, I see that you referenced carbon arrows. How do get them that heavy, i.e. 600 grains and over?

I’m shooting GT Trad 5575, w/ a 100gr. insert, 225gr. head and 10 gr. washer, for a total arrow weight of 630gr. and 23.6% FOC.

Carbon is definitely the easiest way to achieve higher weights and EFOC, but it can be achieved with wood as well, just not as easily.

Like Smithammer I use carbon but I have Easton traditional only cut to 30&3/8″ with 100 grn brass inserts and 300 grn steel force broad head, with the 3X4″ fletching and wrap they weigh in at 731 grns +/- 3grns in a dozen. I use a light set up for deer that come in at 652grns +/- 3 grns on a dozen.

I used a test kit to experiment with different set ups to see what worked best with my bow, I enjoy testing different set ups and when I get a new bow to hunt with I get to start all over again. Sometimes it is frustrating but in the end knowing what different configurations will do in your bow helps your confidence that you have the set up for the game your hunting. And having the more experienced hunters here confirm what you have come up with gives another boost to the confidence level. To me the confidence in your equipment and shooting ability is the top priority to go hunting with a stick bow.

Listen and take to heart the advice given by the folks here, practice and experiment to get the best arrow set up for your bow in my opinion is the best advice I have.

                            Good luck

Have you tried bow fishing for stingray?

I do 3-D shoots when I can get to them, stump shooting, and will hunt any small game that is legal in the area I’m in(I take any and all family members that want to go for all the above activities, that will help keep it fun):D. I try to shoot at least one round (1-3 arrows for me) per day. I like to take out different bows to shoot for fun but after May I shoot exclusively with my hunting setup for the 1st season of big game I’m going after, I may switch to a different arrow set-up for different game, like dropping my arrow weight from 731grns for elk to 652grns for white tail, but I use the bow I plan on hunting with exclusively until all my main seasons end.

Keep shooting with your daughter and have fun.

I also carry a “Spot Locator” just in case. It was a consession I made so my wife doesn’t worry as much when I pack in alone.

                                  J,

Are you sharing your tent with your hunting buddy, or are you each bringing your own tent? How long are you going to be there one week, two weeks? How many nights do you want to stay out in one area if your not finding animals or sign?

I use a two many tent for just myself, reason is I have more room for my gear when the weather turns not so nice. When I pack in with a partner and we are going to be gone a weekend we take a three man back packing tent for light weight, if we are going in for a week or possibly a few days longer we each take in a two man, for the same reason I mentioned above, and with a two man you can get a 3 season packing tent that will be strong enough for poor weather but still light enough to pack around the country. Close to the same weight as a light weight three man.

I also take in a sleeping pad, I prefer a mid thickness that is full length, it’s more weight but I have started to get excessivly stiff in the mornings after a night on the cold hard ground. The size of your sleeping bag will be a personal choice, there’s a lot of good ones out there choose carefully.

For packs I prefer an external frame, one of my hunting partners swears by an internal frame, my external frame I can remove the pack back at the truck and use the frame to haul meat without having to empty my pack prior to going back in for another load of meat. Once again there are a lot of good ones out there, so do your home work and choose carefully. Remember that you get what you pay for.

Dehydrated food for my/our meals, candy bars, jerky, or power bars for snacks, a jet boil stove, and a small mess kit, I always carry a small first aid kit, emergency fire starter, and an emergency bivy bag, a bar of soap with a rag and small backpacking towel, personal hygiene items. And as mentioned before a water filter or tablets for treatment of your water, filters take up more room and it takes a little practice to get it so your not sucking up the bottom of the water source, when its real shallow, but I prefer the filter over the tabs cause when your done with the filter you can drink, with the tabs you have a longer process before drinking.

For clothes I take a change of shirt, to pairs of shorts, one pair of long johns, and a five pairs of socks, a good rain suit, a mid weight jacket and a vest. If my time extends past five days I wash my socks and underwear.

I am usually pretty rough looking when I return.

Don’t forget a compass and a GPS, a fold out maps and the know how to use your compass and map together.

Add bow and arrows and game bags and you have it all.

                                  Good luck and have fun

                                  Troy
