Bucky…..He trains constantly and I can still outwalk him in the hills. And he’s virtually a kid!8)

Nah….you’re in great shape, pal. I can’t wait to hear about it…..I know you’ll have a fantastic time. And I can’t wait for my painter meat.:D

        Nice set-up, Roger.

I’ve slept in a good many improvised lean-to’s thatched with palmetto or an old tarp, eating squirrels and bream cooked over a lighter’d wood fire (in youth, taste buds seem to not be fully developed). But my most minimal hunting camps were just a greasy sleeping bag thrown out under the stars. I did once camp sans tent on a very small island in the rain the night before goose season. By the time morning was approaching, the island was under a few inches of water…but we got some geese!:D

Alex, I guess I have a little bit of collector’s mentality with regards to books. I love to see em on a shelf and hold em in my hand. I’m prone to take one down, read a favorite chapter or essay on the john, and put it back. Now what would happen if I dropped an ebook in the pot?:D

I’ll second that this is good stuff. I’d prefer it with lots of onion and more garlicky (is that a word?) than sweet. I’d never had it before Etter brought it to camp a number of years ago.

Fantastic! That sounds like a winter hunting vacation!

Nice thoughts, Steve. I often wonder the same things…..Another 8,000 years will bring us back closer to the archaic than the modern. I hope.:D

Wex, that is switch cane (Arundinaria gigantea). It is our native SE US cane, and a traditional arrow material among indigenous folks down here. Typically grows in damp, shady hardwood bottoms. Makes a very tough arrow!

For much the same reason folks choose fiberglass or laminated bows over self bows……personal preference. Personally, I shoot them because I’m on the poor-house end of the financial spectrum, and with care, a dozen carbon shafts will last me a number of years (I only target shoot with one arrow). I get “wood grained” carbon fletched with turkey feathers so I can pretend they are wood.:D Carbons are consistent and very tough….I’ve killed multiple critters, rocks, and stumps with the same arrow over several years.:D

With that said, I do think about going to wood one day. The smell of cedar and the romance of wood is hard to ignore. That will be another step forward, to begin tapering shafts, etc. I will add….I make switch cane arrows from time to time, and I have to say they are very near carbon in terms of strength.

I’ve not seen that video, but it would be good to get. I’ve met Thad…..helluva nice guy and a veritable encyclopedia of southeastern primitive skills knowledge. Thanks for the heads up.

No, it’s not backed. I have another stave I need to get busy scraping on over the winter….its been sitting in the barn for a few years. This was my first selfbow, and I learned alot of what NOT to do the next go round.

Thanks. Here’s a few photos. The bow pulls about 45 lbs. at my draw length.

I know of Dersu the Trapper only from the chapter in Heartsblood. I need to read it.

Speaking of Russians , I’ve been making more of an effort to read some more classic literature. Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, etc. I enjoy it, but sometimes have to make myself pick it up.

I had the flu this year……courtesy of my 5 year old. Haven’t had it in many years. It was terrible…..took me a week or so to get back to anything resembling normal.

Thanks, Gary and Paleo. I’ll put em on the list.

My wife got (and I just covertly swiped) “Postcards from Ed”, compiled and edited by our own Mr. Petersen. I’m dying to read it. Like he did for so many others, Abbey’s writing, discovered when I was 20 via a discounted copy of Desert Solitaire, greatly influenced my life.
