Finally finished this up, posted a few unfinished pics earlier. Will be carrying it a good bit this fall.

My wife doesn’t hunt but she is very supportive and loves to have a freezer full of good, honest game. She always helps with the butchering (not the gutting, etc. though….8)) She’s even gotten used to having weird things looking back at her from the freezer. We do all the processing of the meat in the kitchen. If I’m lucky I can even get her and the kids to crank the ol’ meat grinder.

Strange. EHD is relatively common here, in fact I killed a buck last year that had survived it, but you don’t normally see mass herds of deer all dead together. Typically, you find them scattered around water as the disease drives them to water sources.

Elk and their herd social structures are different though so who knows. I’ll be interested to hear what they determine.

Congratulations to the young lady, that is fantastic! And congrats South Texas, too. What an experience to share.

Well that went downhill in a hurry. That’s hilarious….too bad you didn’t have the camera on. That video you posted awhile back of your dog and archery practice was comedy gold.

Post the results when you get everybody healed up.

I’m bringing jerky, coffee, libations, and will have some home-smoked BBQ if I have any left after the UGA/Clemson game. It may be your mtn hog or one of mine from down here….can’t remember. Don’t forget your fly rod.

in reply to: Hunting canoe #40591

I use a canoe and kayak alot for hunting, fishing, bumming around, and used to guide on a number of rivers. My humble recommendation is to look for a wider, flatter hull design (as opposed to more rounded). I can easily haul two people (or a dog), hunting/camping gear, etc. in my 15′ aluminum canoe. Have had other material types and hull designs, but the aluminum is light….I’ve got it painted so it doesn’t shine. Just have to be more careful about dinging the side with a paddle, as it is louder. You’ll invariably have to portage low water, drag it over logs, load it by yourself, paddle out a heavy critter, etc…..weight is an important consideration regardless of material.

And don’t stand up.. Keep your center of gravity low…especially around crocs:shock: Gators are a dime a dozen and of no concern. Crocs?

Funny you mention that, Dave. I just finished reading that chapter, and thought it timely. Also the chapter on human/bear conflicts….

I dunno, Jim….a nice curly pig tail or muddy, floppy sow ear may look right fancy hanging from that bow.:D

Fantastic photos, pal. They’ll be in the oaks very soon and I can’t wait.

                          in reply to: Celebration #38030

I always sit next to the animal where I find it, place my hand on it, and repeat a little something I’ve been saying to the animals for 20 years or so.

We always have a celebration at home…..usually the wife and kids all come out and help, we’ll build a fire, have a drink, etc….same goes for the processing.:D

But yes, the ultimate celebration is the meal!

I run a few cams. I enjoy the surprise of new critter photos, but I sure don’t use them to “pattern” deer, but more to see what is going on out there….still in velvet? Fawns drop yet? I actually use them more prior to turkey season just to see some (hopefully) strutting gobbler pics…you can never look at too many strutting gobblers.8) Like someone else said, I like the mystery of being surprised by a particular buck when it comes easing through the swamp.

Some guys have a folder of all the buck photos from their property…..with estimated ages, pet names, and whether they are on the “hit list” for that season or not. That, to me, is more akin to animal husbandry than hunting and I have no interest in it.

Aldo Leopold got it right, “Very intensive management of fish and game lowers the unit value of the trophy by artificializing it.”

Here’s my two for the year:

                              Apex Predator 66″ longbow, 51@28

GT3555 traditionals with Magnus 1 (245 up front)

Next is my selfbow that’s almost finished (gotta oil and poly, lace on a grip and she’s done):

                              62″……50@27

Cane arrows with stone points or above GT3555/Magnus combo

One note about the diamondback skins….no snakes were harmed in the making of this bow.:D They are roadkills picked up by friends of mine. I don’t kill snakes, especially E. Diamondbacks which are declining throughout their range.

Thanks for doing a great job here and keeping things running smoothly. This is the most intelligent hunting board I’ve found.

I wasn’t thinking of the quality of life as sad, per se…..more referring to the mental and emotional anguish that drove him to the jungle and seems to have kept him there.

                                  Amazing story, though.
