in reply to: Merino wool pants #57184

Now you see why I wear long shorts with Merino wool long underwear! I am always surprised that I stay warm even in wet/snowy early fall weather. I haven’t worn a pair of actual pants in several seasons here in Colorado.
That said, I own a pair of LL Bean wool pants to use when the temps get colder and I have to sit for a bit. They aren’t Merino but they are still real nice. They are well made and not as heavy as advertised. I wore them on the late season Roosevelt hunt two seasons ago in Washington and they performed admirably. Dave, I know you are skinny right now but they might fit you if you want to use them. They only have 4 pockets but I believe there is a 6 pocket version at LL Bean…

“We owe the animals we hunt the cleanest and fastest possible deaths, and anything that works against that is wrong wrong wrong.”

        Well said Dave!

No disrespect intended. In my opinion, mechanical broadheads are an absolute disaster waiting to happen particularly with big animals like elk. One of the worst broadhead designs ever invented. Like James said, check out Ashby’s broadhead reports and I bet you will reconsider…

Looking forward to hearing about your upcoming deer hunt.
Sounds like you had an excellent elk hunt which is the true trophy to behold…Well done Idabow.

“Elk Camp is a special place…” Now that is the truth!
My father just finished Don Thomas’ latest book titled “Have Bow Will Travel.” Excellent book…I don’t spend as much time in camp as Pop does but I always bring my bible to read and the current issue of TBM is a staple in our camp. I also like to have Dave’s fine book, “Man Made Of Elk” in camp just to get the juices flowing!

Idabow, I understand your predicament. To answer your question, I use a watch to stop me from overcalling. A chirp or two every 7-10 minutes. Unless I hear a response, I do not call, no matter what. In addition, I set up and go through the process no less than 45 minutes a session. Bulls come in silent all the time and I have found that it is beneficial to wait until the time is up before I move. Plus, still hunting in a promising area, (of course having the wind in your face)
walking quietly, stopping every 10 yards and glassing in front of you is an excellent tactic for hunting elk. I have found that calling can be overrated at times. Particularly in areas where the elk have been pressured. Hope this helps…

Thanks for all the kind words gents! I tell you though, in my experience nothing has humbled me more than elk and where they live. Every season I learn something new which thankfully provides me a “beginner’s mindset” on the hunt and the animal itself…Time to start shooting broadheads in earnest!

Over dinner one night, a group of fine Washingtonian hunters offered the following; Roosevelt elk are like bodybuilders, they don’t travel very far but are big and burly and are as tough as nails…Rocky Mtn elk are like long distance runners, they travel great distances, have hardly no fat to speak of and are “lean and mean”. I think they hit the nail on the head with this analogy…

A 5X5 bull taken with a Bruin Recurve. A 15 yard shot, the bull didn’t even know he was shot, he literally dropped to his knees and died right where he once stood. A clean pass through…

I didn’t find a drop of blood but heard the crash. I turned to my right and look what I found.

Back in the day when I was about 15lbs lighter…The labor of love…Backpacking elk out on our backs.

One of the longest days of my life. But it ended well…
