in reply to: String jumping and ducking? #54192
Steve Sr.. Good Post. There are a number of things you can do to quiet a bow. But, I have to agree. Pads on the upper limbs and a heavier arrow goes a long way. I personally don’t shoot recurves, only longbows. And one of the great attributes of Bamboo -QUIET! Real Quiet. But as Steve Sr. correctly stated on the other post. No such thing as too Quiet!
in reply to: The Running Woodsman #53240Hunting season hasn’t started here yet! Arrrrgh!!! BUT… one observation I had in my deer stand one day. I thought was kinda puzzling…….
HOW IS IT I CAN’T TYPE OR READ THE COMPUTER WITHOUT MY READING GLASSES ON. BUT WHEN I AM IN MY STAND OR BLIND I CAN SEE A FIELD MOUSE WEAVING THROUGH THE CREVICES OF A FIELD STONE FENCE 30 YARDS AWAY!:lol:
in reply to: Homemade Cresting Tool #48192Hi Michael.. Well… I was surprised. Only one minor adjustment, Need cut a new end piece of wood with a smaller hole for the end of the shaft for support and stablility. The first one was a 9/16’s hole and the shaft was vibrating eradically a lot. So I cut a new piece just using a 3/8’s drill bit, and now it spins true. I will take pic’s after the first dozen shafts are done. I’m not an expert so just practicing a bit for starters. I have updated my crest though. Being a McDonald I used the colors of the McDonald Clan Hunting Tartan.
Want you don’t see in the pic is the front of the motor and the drvie axle, I bought some 3/16’s surgical tubing and attached to the end of the drive shaft axle, the tapered nock tip at the bottom of the shaft goes into the front end of the tube, and the end of the shaft goes into the shaft support hole at the other end. There is a foot pedal on the bench in the pic, just place it on the floor pedal to the medal and hands free.. so you can concentrate on painting.
in reply to: How long should I just sit there? #46818Well… as a general rule I never stay in the same stand for more than two days in a row, which is long enough. I may come back a week or so later. But I never stay in the same spot for very long. It doesn’t take long for your scent trail to cover the area. No matter how clean and scent free you are. That and the watchful eyes you don’t see. I read once, that for every deer we see…. there are 10 we don’t see.
Best advice is to have multiple spots that you can hunt, and can get in and out of undetected, based upon wind direction and weather.
in reply to: hunting shows part 2 #40578Greatreearcher wrote: hmm, that is odd, seeing as how the genesis is nothing more than a recurve with wheels!???? Why would he say that, I mean I get trying to push your product, but that is a bit rediculous. That was such a compound shooters statement. I have freinds that say that type of crap to me, “when you gona put down that toy and trade it in for a real bow”!! I just simply say, “When I am afraid of a challenge!”8)
Yes, I think it was two things. One – Lack of Knowledge on Watson’s part; and Two – Pushing a product (The Genesis Bow).
I wonder how Mathews Archery feels about bashing Traditional Equipment though? Since they charge such a hefty price for their production longbow.
in reply to: hunting shows part 2 #40113Well.. I was a little taken back tonight. I was looking at the Mathews Archery Show tonight with David Watson. I normally don’t watch this show, but it was showing a Church Run Youth Archery program. So I thought it would be worth watching. Now of course all the bows were the “Genesis” Cable Bows. But I thought I’d like to see the program. Then David Watson had to open his mouth a say, what a pleasure it was for the youth to have the Genesis bows versus shooting those antiquated Recurves! 👿 There was no need to bash traditional archery just because you want to handicap someone with wheels. 🙄 They even aired one youth stating what a pleasure the Genesis was versus shooting a recurve. Why be skilled at something when teechnology gives you all the shortcuts you need. 😯

in reply to: Chundoo Lodgepole Pine Shaft Suppliers #38656I take it as a No! 😆
FYI.. I am told Twig Archery in Ohio carries Chundoo Shafts. Only way to contact them is by phone number, which is in a directory online.
in reply to: Missed a grouse today #38651Glad you’re out hunting already! Ah, memories. We always remember the ones that got away!:)
in reply to: New Department Added #32669“Subtle Reminders of Autumn”. That was a wonderful story! Great points too. As a hunter ed instructor for many years I am often asked how young is too young to hunt? My answer is always the same. It depends on the child. How a child confronts the realization of the death of an animal, should not be over looked in these considerations. I was glad to see, Jarrod’s article bring the subject to light.
in reply to: Favorite Game animal to hunt and why? #29848Yup… Lance makes a good point. At least here in the east, most game departments want to inspect the bear before it is butchered. Meaning all you can do in the field, is field dress them. That being said. If your bear is more than a couple hundred pounds, which many are well over. You’re going to need plenty of help getting him out!:)
in reply to: stringing bows #29834I am a longbow guy myself. But I will always advocate using a stringer. My thought on this is that stringing a bow is just as dangerous as loading a firearm. I had a string slip on me once, out of my little 45# Stick. It whacked me across the chest and shoulder and left me black and blue for several days. I thank God, it wasn’t my jaw or my eye!
in reply to: Bear hunting #29828I know here in New York State… Like what has been said. If you can find their food source that’s a good start. I know from the apple trees in my backyard, they will come to them in late fall to get the remaining apples, it seems the mushier the better – they are sweeter. Find an old apple orchard with bears in the area is a good bet. Just hope they come in during daylight and not after dark. Also I find using a treestand and a predator call will draw them in also.
