I think Dave said it all. But I will add the old cliche. “Beware of the man who only owns one ‘gun’, chances are he knows how to us it”. We see and hear so many people buying the smoothest, quickest, quietness bows known to man, and a few month later they’re on the Internet classifieds. I shot a 3D round with a gentleman at Compton’s a few years ago, who shot basically a 40 dollar Shakepeare Recurve (when it was new). But I’ll tell you what, he kept that bow in pristine condition, and I bet he could have given anyone at the rendezvous a run for their money in a shoot off. Bottom line a good bow doesn’t make a good shooter, but a good archer can shoot any bow well.

Me.. I like the aesthtics of art, and superb craftsman. What I tell all my students in hunter education.. when it comes to equipment, always buy the best you can afford, it may save your life.

Msacrher… wish I knew. I see some pretty low prices on eBAY though. 45 to 50 dollars, suspect it could go up to 75 or so before the auction ends. I have no intention of selling mine.

Well, almost 10 years ago on one of the other start up stickbow sites, I started out with “LongbowHunter”. But then it occurred to me that half of us are all longbow hunters so I changed my handle to my name. On AT I’m still Longbowhunter. Most sites – SteveMcD. Besides I work in the IT Industry.. I got so many freakin’ userid’s it’s almost impossible to keep track of them all. Hopefully, I won’t be forgetting my name, any time soon! 😆

Yeah.. every time I go to a show I think to myself. I need another knife like I need a whole in my head! 😆

But they are all works of art and craftsmanship, So I am always looking. 🙂

I’ve had my Buck 110 Folder ever since I bought it in the PX when I was in the service a few decades ago. I would be at a loss without it. Marbles, Schrades, Case, Barlows, Bokers, Custom… got them or had them, But there’s always my Buck! More importantly the hunting memories that go along with it. 8)

Well… I’ve read the Dr. Ashby Reports and articles by Dave Petersen. Maybe, I’m a hopeless romantic, but I will always stick with wood. Spine, High FoC, Extreme FoC all very important things to know. Knowledge can only make me a better wood arrow maker. Like I said, I’m a romantic, I’ll give up on wood when pigs fly! 🙂

DD49… you did not mention what draw length or bow poundage you’re pulling? Also the Surewood shafts you received, what length were they when you spine tested them? I’ve never had an issue with Surewood Shafts yet and I’ve gotten a few dozen of them.

Hi Patrick… the NM Whisper Longbow has been my go to hunting bow for many years. The all bamboo limbs are very smooth and quiet. But the Handle fits the folcrum of my hand perfectly and comfortably, it allows the the bow hand to grip the bow exactly the same way all the time.

I do see that Steve Turay has changed the Whisper bow a bit from the earlier model. Mine was the sister model to the Superior, only having a reverse handle. Mine has a touch of reflex to it, the same as the Superior, instead of the Classic, as the model is now described.

                    Let’ see.. presently –

Northern Mist Reverse Handle Whisper Longbow 64″ 51@28
                    Howard Hill Halfbreed 66″ 52@28
                    Northern Mist Baraga 64″ 53@28

                    Bear Bearcat Recurve 62″ 40@28
                    Martin Stick ML10 62″ 45@28
Pearson Locksley Hybrid Longbow 64″ 45@28

Had Bear Grizzly and 2 other Pearson’s that I just gave away to those who needed them. Cause for me, it was just the right thing to do.

Top three are my GO TO bows in that order. I am debating between another Northern Mist or Howard Hill at this time.
Toss up between a HH Big 5 and a NM Superior.

Guess I won’t be trying Tamarack any time soon. This is what I was told.

The USDA Wood Handbook shows it to be around 20% heavier and a little weaker than POC. Douglas fir varies tremendously depending on where it grows, but tamarack is around 10% heavier and weaker than the best Doug. fir.

in reply to: NEW STRING? #16136

Guys.. I respectfully disagree. If the serving is worn out where the nock is set on the serving. You have to assume the bowstring itself is also effected by use and wear. It is not worth the risk of having a bow explode on you and risk injury to yourself or breaking your bow. For the few dolars a string cost, buy a new string. Older bows generally are suited to dacron, because dacron is more forgiving with the bow, takes more of the energy / shock, and also dacron loops are softer on the limb nock and will not cut into the wood. Modern laminated bows with overlays, basically all will accept modern FastFlight string, however to be on the safe side for bow / nock wear and quietness, I would pad the loop ends with 7 or 8 strands of dacron anyway. I change my bow strings 2x a year, every 6 months on all my bows. I am preferential to dacron myself, and dacron will stretch about 1 to 2 inches during the first 200 – 300 shots.

                          Good Luck!

P.S. an old rifle for a Checkmate Hunter. Man you got a sweet deal!!!

Well today was opening day of Gun Season in the New York Southern Zone. And it really brings tears to my eyes. All the wheel guys have forsaken their bows for Shotguns & Rifles. And I’m hunting 20,000 acres pretty much by myself! 😀 8)
