in reply to: A REMINDER OF WHY WE HUNT TRADITIONALLY #9860
Ethics are the values a person inherently carries with them. A by the time a person reaches young adolesence they certainly know the difference between what is right and what is wrong. The two “hunters” here were just slobs. I’m sure many hunters regardless of the equipment they use would be appalled by this.
The operative word here is Ethics. I’m sure the old gentlemen or woman who still hunts with a 30-30 Winchester considers themselves “traditional” too.
xBows are not the evil incernate, it was actually the Longbow that replaced the xBow as the superior weapon of choice. Even today’s compounds are far more superior than the xBow. That Tech Argument was lost when the Hollis Allen Compound for handicapped hunters was allowed in the Archery Season.
Just my 2 cents.
in reply to: Who's Hunting the Late Season? #9843Here in NY Bow season started on Oct. 15th, it ended on Nov. 18th, where gun season kickes in and ends on Dec.13, then the Late Muzzleloader/Archery Season runs from Dec. 14 thrugh Dec. 20th. Luckily I can hunt with my Longbow through all the seasons which is what I do. But, each season has it’s own qualities, by the late archery season most hunters have either filled a tag or given up, I like this season best for peace and soltitude it provides. Which to me is appropriate as we approach the winter solstice and Christmas season.
in reply to: Deer Calls? Or Just Blowing Hot Air! #51021MCulksa… Yup. TBM and FFG is about it for me too. Except I’ll throw in Primitive Archer as well.8)
Yup. I rattled in a 12 point about 15 years ago. I’ll never forget it.. he came charging in! No time to get a shot. Same story.. no steaks on the table. 😆
I do not dispute that calls and scents and rattling work or not. Sometimes given the very right circumstances they do. My point is more often than not, they don’t work, and I highly suspect they spook more deer than they attract. 🙄
Just my 2 cents. 🙂
in reply to: Plaid Shirts #32752For Jaq Style Wool Pliad shirts I’ve found good deals at Sierra Trading Post as mentioned above.
in reply to: I got the shakes! #32750Fortunate for me. Up to and during the shot, I am very focused and methodical. Meaning about as unemotional and cold blooded as one can get. AFTER the shot, I have to sit down and calm down for 5 or 10 minutes, because that is when I get the shakes and lirerally come apart.
in reply to: They say you cant go back #32745Two words, Ron… God Bless!
in reply to: Squirrels 4 Duncan 0 #32739Good Luck, Duncan. But not for me. With my luck the buck of a lifetime will step out just as I’m drawing a JUDO point on a tree rat!!! No way!
in reply to: Opinons on Misses While Hunting #32735I would be lying if I said I never made a bad shot. Because, I have. anyone who hasn’t, hasn’t hunted long enough. I think over time experience builds confidence, For me it had always been rushing the shot. Take your time, once you move the animal is likely going to see it anyway. Just take the shot. Establish a mantra, it applies to hunting as much as any form of target shooting. Over time it is your foundation. To quote a phrase from Reg Darling, “I have taken few shots that I have regretted. But, I have never regretted not taking a shot.”. Then on the other hand… if you’re waiting for a perfect shot all the time… get use to an empty freezer. What goes on in the woods, stays in the woods!
in reply to: some help please #42360My apologies. Troy is right, regarding short drawing. I was thinking of the increasing weight beyond 28″ for the recurve. My confusion!:roll::lol:
Wolfkill… so 47# at your current draw is about right. Short drawing will decrease poundage by 3-4 pounds per inch.
So now the question really is – what arrows to use? A 64# bow at 28 inch for someone drawing 28 inches, would want arrows spined at 70-75 for 29 inches, add 5# more for 125gr broadhead or more. Which would equal a 75-80 spined shaft.
This shaft would be grossly over-spined for your draw length.
A 60-65 pound bow (@28″) with a draw length of 23 inches means you need a 24″ Shaft to Bottom of point. Which means you need about a 50-55 spined shaft. (at 26″ 60-65 spine)
in reply to: some help please #41451Hi.. Longbows are not dynamic like recurves are. If it’s a Longbow, even a hybrid longbow – you are pulling 64# from start to finish! Recurves are incremental in increasing weight and do not reach their peak weight until at full draw.
64# pounds is way too much for you. It takes a powerful man to pull back that weight.
If the longbow is your preferred choice.. drop down to 40 or 45.

in reply to: My Wapiti quest ended last night #41440Good Stuff, Alex! You walked that “thin place” between Heaven and Earth. And now have those memories for a lifetime!
We don’t always get what we pray for. But, we get what we need! Food for the Soul!
So we’ll chase some deer again this fall !!! ???
Safe Travels, Alex!
in reply to: some help please #41155What Ray said. Check your states minimum poundage requirement. But, 40# is enough for Whitetails and even Black Bear. Some states the minimum is 35#, but if you can handle 40-45 you’d be better off.
in reply to: Barta on techno-BS #40408Annointed.. yes, right on there!
I don’t know… Tred as a person is to be greatly admired. His hunting philosophy is good too. I just wish he would walk the talk! By example.
Ehhhh…. bending the rules.. I’m state volunteer!! Conservation Officers Association!!!…… hahahaaha bend the rules a little… do tell!:lol::lol::lol:
Ohh.. I wish Hunting Season would start here! OCT 15th!!!
in reply to: Barta on techno-BS #40282Anointed… I don’t agree with you on the first paragragh. NO. I have never taken an “unethical” shot NOR have I ever “bent” the conservation laws.
As far as longshots, etc. from the old timers I know you are right there. Different time, different mentality then too.
Like I said Tred is most likely one of the nicest guys in the world. BUT his “do as I say, not as I do”… gets unbearable. Especially with the lousy shots he routinely takes. He gives Traditional Bowhunting a Big Black Eye on a nationwide public stage. They must think we’re all buffoons!
And then we wonder why the wheel bow crowd says “do you hunt with that”? As a serious question.
