in reply to: Don Thomas Deer carry method? #10586
Once upon a time my friends and I carried whole deer and antelope back to the truck. Then we wondered why we were covered in blood and had to clean such a mess. Soon after a senior mentor told me “it is only what you learn after you knew it all that matters” I never did anything quite as silly again. Now, any game past spitting from the truck distance is boned with the gutless technique and comfortably backpacked out.The mess is coyote dinner and I don’t have any injuries. If it makes you happy to take a whole one out on your back then more power to you!
in reply to: Danner Jackal? #61690I had some and they were seriously the worst boots I’ve ever owned. Poor fit, goretex leaked after TWO hikes, sent them back and another pair did the same. NOT a fan, and hope you all have better luck with Danner products.I’m being as polite as possible.

in reply to: A Truly Sharp Broadhead #47157I enjoyed the informative article and thanks again for the insight. One thing to add is that you can actually SEE a dull edge and/or gouges in the blades edge when reflected in the light. For those who don’t look at your edges try it with good magnification and bright light. I don’t recall this technique in articles, but it is a great tip from an old family friend.

in reply to: Fixing what isn't broken #42355For some folks the tinkering and testing is a big part of the fun. In the end, YOU need to be confident and you are now shooting a respectable arrow set up. If you change, then do it soon so you have plenty of time to experiment and evaluate before next season. Make it fun and learn something along the way.

in reply to: most challenging animal to hunt? #28282Spot and stalk antelope is definately a top contender. Their vision is really amazing and they do smell people contrary to what some magazine experts say.
in reply to: Traditional Takedowns Question #37854I have the connexion on a centaur that is quiet and flawless. If you do any flying, backpacking, atv, horse packing etc. you will be thankful of the option. Also you can store your prized custom in a gunsafe if you prefer. The only negative is the cost is a little more but well worth it for me.
in reply to: pop-up ground blinds #37852I once ordered a cheapo and it sounded like a cheapo plastic raincoat in the cold.Set yours outside packaged and set up and test the fabric for noise so you can return it if needed. Sent it back and paid for the tall DB with no regrets. One of the original DB guys is a longbow man. The blind doubles as an icefishing tent.

Check bowsite.com thread “penettrating elk shoulders” in the hunting forums. Maybe a more savvy gent can get the link correct.
Another thanks to Dr. Ashby.in reply to: Four wheelers… #41679I’m not a big fan of ATV’s except for the handicapped or as a tool, but the wolves in western Mt. have done more serious damage to our elk than ATV’s! It’s out of control. The wolves hunt and chase 24/7/365 and some areas may not have enough calf survival to sustain the herd and Judge Malloy is in the anti’s pocket. These wolves are coming soon to your best elk herds and your hands are tied. The officials at least attempt to regulate ATV’s. I took my kids antelope hunting today and watched a pack of 5 chase the antelope and the rancher said even the antelope fawn crop on his place was hammered the first 2 weeks.
Be careful picking your fights!in reply to: Ultra-EFOC Barely Above The Heavy Bone Threshold #22602the lightest and stiffest shafts in terms of GPI are Easton Flatlines and Gold Tip Ultralights. Cut your arrows as short as you can get by with and don’t go with a arrow shelf that is too center shot.
Are you findind these arrows stiff enough when adding required point weights such as 100gr adapters,125gr inserts, and up to 300gr pts/bh?
I’m bareshafting quite weak at 29.5-30inches(min length possible) with GT Expedition Hunter 7595 out of a Centaur 60# @29 bow and didn’t yet solve the issue with side plate additions. I do need more quality time messing with the side plate however. If I recall Doc used a similiar set up testing but I think he used a shorter shaft which I’m unable to do. Still wishing for the magic arrow for this new bow!
Thanksin reply to: classified ad ?? #13795Thanks for the replies, however I’m not convinced there is a great enough membership here to generate more traffic than a remote mounain road when compared to the other trad sites busy freeways.
