in reply to: Bow quivers #52127
It doesn’t seem that ABS offers the single arrow quiver anymore – too bad. The Kanati version seems like the best ‘single arrow’ option available these days. BW still makes a nice one that I’ve checked out on a friend of mine’s bow, though I don’t have any experience with it.

There’s a lot of good info in the “Tip of the Week” archive!
in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #51635Down to the wire, and I think I’ve finally settled on my rig:
#57 Tomahawk Legacy
w/
GT Trad 5575 shafts, 28.5″
100 gr. inserts
225 gr. single bevel Steel Force Traditionals
Total weight – 620 gr.
FOC – 26%
and, in a major departure for me, I’ve decided to leave the bow quiver behind for the first time (well, almost…). This is in conjunction with deciding to carry a smaller pack this season, as I’ve never liked carrying a back quiver with a full-size daypack. My elk hunting is generally no more than a few miles from my house, and it’s become too tempting to carry a bigger pack and then fill it with more than what I really, truly need. So I’ve gone back to my Bison Gear ‘Outfitter’ pack, which allows for comfortable carry of my Safari Tuff back quiver as well. And then I’ll be using a Kanati Solo on the bow, for keeping just one arrow at the ready.
Less than 48 hrs. to go….
in reply to: Noteable Quotes! #51527Simple, but sage advice.
in reply to: Pretty neat video I think applies here #49678Excellent. And a great reminder that archery seasons were started in order to have a primitive weapons season – not to try every little trick of technology to get around that.
As a side note, I’m excited and impressed by the quality, and the message, of some of the hunting films that are coming out these days. It gives me a little hope that there are still folks out there that ‘get it.’

I loved that bow. Of the 6 or 7 bows I bought and sold over the last 11 years, It is the only one I wish I kept!
Yeah, I’m surprised that you don’t hear more about them, but it seems like the people who have them really like them. I think the one piece versions are made by Great Plains?
in reply to: Memorable Wildlife #48369Good thread.
One experience that comes to mind –
I was kayaking around the southern tip of Kuiu Island in Southeast Ak years ago. It was a foggy, calm day, and humpback whales were surfacing nearby – explosive breaths coming out of the mist, and every now and then you would catch a massive tail in the air as it slid underneath the surface. I was stopped in the middle of the bay, jigging for halibut with a handline, when the line suddenly went taut and started slowly moving sideways in that way that halibut do.
Whales continued to surface close by, as I tried to gauge just how big this halibut might be, and whether it was something I wanted to bring alongside my boat or not. And I remember thinking, “wow – there are these massive creatures cruising around me, I’ve got a halibut on the line….how could this possibly be better?”
And that’s when the howling rose up out of the rainforest and carried across the bay. I looked over (still struggling with the halibut) as one of the wolves popped out of the trees, and started trotting down the length of the beach.
The combination of all those things happening simultaneously continues to be one of my more memorable wildlife experiences.
in reply to: Bow quivers #48318I’ve been using Eagle’s Flight quivers exclusively on my bows for a while now, and love ’em. They’re well made, stay put, and are some of the lightest bow quivers I’ve ever seen. Even on my longbows, I hardly know they’re there.

I’m lucky enough to have a better half that loves cooking and eating wild game, and enjoys the butchering process.

Looking forward to updates and continued research!

😀 It’s taken me a while to “grow into” that little Kanati, and at times in the past, I never thought I’d be able to shoot it well enough to seriously hunt with it. But the more I’ve stuck with it, I believe this bow has really made me a better archer in the end (not masking my form shortcomings the way my recurves tend to), forcing me to always be spot-on and consistent. And at 56″ AMO, it’s a joy to carry around in the field and hunt in thicker stuff with. I’d buy another bow from JK in a heartbeat.
