That doesn’t sound like a fellow passionate about supporting wildlife, it sounds like a guy who sees that as a burden that must be carried to achieve his real goals, what ever they may be.
My thoughts precisely.
in reply to: WOODSMANSHIP ON TV? #11316On Your Own Adventures and MeatEater are the only two I’ve been able to sit through. There may be other good ones, but I don’t own a tv and so I rarely have an opportunity to see what’s out there.
But OYOA does a good job of showcasing true, do-it-yourself hunts (or at least as much as they can be on a tv show), all on public land and the host always makes a point of talking about of the importance of protecting public land. It’s not traditional bowhunting, but it’s one of the few shows that seems to be sending the right message.

Btw… why didn’t the cameraman help the old guy out of the river when he capsized?? Lol!!
Because its REALITY! 😉
Seriously, though, I fear that once people get bored with this level of reality, it won’t be long before some channel decides to take it to the next level, a la “Hunger Games”…
in reply to: Bent 100grain brass insert #63677Yep, I’ve had that happen.
On the other hand, I was shooting in the basement last night, and got distracted and had a weird release and ended up missing the target and hitting the concrete wall with an arrow – at 10 yards. Set up was a 175 gr. field point, a carbon collar, 100gr. insert on a GT Trad 5575 shaft. Other than a dull point, the rest of it was completely fine! No bent ferrule, nor bent insert, no mushrooming, nothing. I was astounded.

I’m rootin’ for him. ‘Yotes are true survivors, after all…
in reply to: Yote Robertson #62752I think the hardest part of “surviving” for Yote is not going to be the wilderness by any means, but surviving a highly-dramatized tv circus. 😕
in reply to: Co -Editors Note #60258Well said, Jim.
An thank you Don for being willing to be honest and tell it like it is. There often seems to be a direct relationship between pursuits that have come to be dominated by an overabundance of marketing-hype, and the aversion to such honesty. 😉

I would add that neck gaiters, from Buff, come in all thicknesses and colors, can be used as a face mask or over the head (I wear a bush hat(old habits die-hard) with burlap strips, they arent very warm but with the Buff’s you get the heat retention)…
Seconded on the neck coverage. Having my neck warm makes a huge difference for me in keeping warm. I’ve got some lightweight Buffs for early season hunting (they even come in some simple, non-digi camo patterns) and they double as a face mask. They also make them in merino wool which is nice for later in the season.
For really cold temps, I have a Smartwool neck gaiter, which is much thicker than either option above, and is great for keeping my neck and ears warm. Makes a huge difference, esp. if you’re not moving around much.

in reply to: What ya got goin? #58199Sold a couple bows this fall, and I have a new one on the way shortly, courtesy of Jason Kendall (JK Traditions). He sent me this pic tonight. I already own one Kanati from Jason, and it’s become one of my absolute favorites. This one will be 58″ AMO, and #53 @ 28″, walnut riser with elm limb veneers, action-boo cores, red/black phenolic accents. Can’t wait…

in reply to: Blackbeard Bound! #57701Seems like a really cool, unique trip – quite different than my typical hunting. I’d love to do it someday!

Thanks, David. If anyone comes across more examples, I’d love to see them.
And if it isn’t obvious, all of this started with a discussion with someone who was asserting that d/r longbows are a product of recent times, and “not as traditional” as the D-shaped English longbow. I replied that it depends entirely on which “tradition” you’re choosing to pay attention to, which is what got me more and more interested in finding old/historic examples. Some of these, such as the Egyptian bows, I had no idea about. It been fun learning!
The Shoshonee bow pictured above, in particular, looks strikingly like many modern r/d longbows being built today…

I’d like to see the Smithhammer/Elkheart duo on the next reality show. Duel philosophizing, Unscripted… And a bottle of bourbon for good measure:D
Haha…well, I think I could guarantee that it would be like nothing else currently on tv…for better or worse. 😀
mhay wrote: Yes sir , Clay , I’d pay to see SH/Elkheart Show ,,,,,but I’m afraid there would be a sizable uprising , possibly resulting in a TAR N FEATHERIN’ from the modern high tech crowd.
It’s tempting to do it for that reason alone. Well, except for the tar n’ featherin’ part.

Yeah, I had the same concern when I first saw it. But I haven’t found it to be an issue at all, as long as I’m somewhat strategic about getting in and out of it.:D
