in reply to: Improving accuracy #45910

What helped me as much as books and dvd was to find a local coach that is part of the JOAD longbow team for a local shop and he has helped improve my form in about 3 sessions more than I ever got out of reading. This was due to reading I could think things through and think I was doing but not until i had somebody look at my form and correct and then I could feel what correct rotational draw or proper back tension was. The plus to the proper technique I learned is I do not get tired after 2 hours of shooting.

I enjoy the simplicity and the challenge. I was honestly getting bored with shooting a compound, plus it is a lighter of a bow to tote around the woods. 😀

What price range for a new bow are you willing to spend. I went and got a good deal buying off the Bob Lee website since they were having specials. i also talked to Mt. baker bows in Washington they were interesting to me but the timing was not going to work. There are a lot of great bowyers out there creating works and depending on what you are willing to spend you could end up with a work of art.

I ended up for my first longbow buying a Bob Lee one piece t has no handshock is quiet enough to not need any string silencers when shot and is fast.

If you would like alongbow that is reasonable. While I do not have experience with Dry Ridge, i did talk to a vendor that advertised in Trad Bow himself that I liked before I went with a bob lee bow. He was Kohannah Bows, it was just the turn around time was too long for me to get a bow. I do agree that all the bows you see on the classified will be for a weight at 28″ draw. So I went down to a draw weight of 43# at 28″. Which kept me from being ovverbowed.

I am 6’4″ and have a 30.25″ draw length along with being left handed I found that a bob lee worked well for me, they still have a clearance section on their website. There are also quite a few specialty bowyers that make great bows that will fit your draw length. I think one if I had to look again is big foot bows in Oregon or even eagle wing archery there too. The one thing I did was go to a local traditional archery shop and try as many bows as they had in stock that fit me. Also I found when I switched from compound to longbow that I needed to clean up my form a bit to increase my accuracy so I found a local coach to give me a few lessons. Your mileage may vary if that helps you or not.

the 2 numbers refer to the supposed thickness of the thread weave and amount of material. So a lower number means lighter weave, with woll underwear on the lowest number I can often see my finger the other side when I put it inside. I think either will work based on how warm a person you are and the requirements you have. For me when hunting where I move a bit like for elk I go with the ligthest weave since I naturally produce a lot of body heat. However if it is where I am going to sit a lot and it is cold out I will go with the heavier weave and usually stay pretty warm. For rme I tried the minus 33 and did not like the fit so I go with Ibex which seems to fit me better.

I like to go after the squirrels when even hunting for they taste so good on the fire. But not always so lucky.
