in reply to: Help needed with wood arrows #32868
Thanks for all the input. I called Bill at AMAW and he was more than happy to refund me or resend some arrows that met my needs.
Glad he made everything right, can’t say anything bad about it.
in reply to: Help needed with wood arrows #31661I like the idea of asking what he suggests. I don’t want to be rude and demanding, just would like to know what he thinks is best.
Thanks.

And it’s safe to say that I do not have the time, patience, or expertise to put in that work! 😆
I now understand your struggles though. Thanks for the input.

in reply to: Help needed with wood arrows #29301And this is not meant to say anything bad about what AMAW does or demean them in any way – just simply wanting to know if I got a bad batch or if it’s normal.
Thanks

in reply to: Hawkeye Bowmen Traditional Shoot #29088Saw, we’re staying at Darien Lake State Park – this was sort of a last minute trip! I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the pop up on top of the hill though!
Duncan, I will be sure to do so! After ETAR I got hooked so I’m sure this one will be well documented
😆
in reply to: 2013 hunting rigs #27287I have tinkered with the subject of EFOC as well as how to achieve/measure it in the forums but this is the first real life instance I’ve seen someones rig using it all set up.
I really like the concept and it’s more reassuring seeing someone confidently using a hunting rig set up this way.
It just may be time to do some tinkering 😆

Arrows:
Gt Trad 5575 cut to 28.5″
360 gr. head weight with single bevel Eclipse Werewolfs
650 gr. overall
28% FOC
4 x 2-1/4″ fletch
Smith, how well do those 4 x 2-1/4″ fletchings stabilize that arrow? I’m assuming pretty darned good considering they’re on your hunting rig 😆
Never seen someone do it that way, especially when chucking 360 gr. up front.
in reply to: Bow length #26054No problem!
And to answer your other question, when it is unstrung that is the actual length if you measured from tip to tip and laid the measuring tape flat along the bow the whole way.
If you were to measure it in a straight line from tip to tip it would be roughly 2 or 3″ shorter than the listed AMO length.
Good luck!
in reply to: Bow length #26045The AMO length of your bow is 62″, which means when you order a string you will need a 58″ string. The general concensus is that recurves take a string 4″ shorter than the overall length and longbows take one 3″ shorter.
You need to pay very careful attention when ordering a string though, as some strings are listed by AMO length. So when you look at a string, if it says 62″ AMO that means that it’s actually the right size you need for a 62″ bow. If it says the sizes are listed as the actual string length, then you will need to choose 58″.
Also, if the bow is vintage, it’s safer to use a Dacron B-50 or B-55 string rather than a fast flight string to avoid breaking the tips. (Some may not deem this necessary I suppose but it can’t hurt to be safe)
Hope this helps.

Do telephone poles count? Seems like a pretty good spot for a stand to me 😆
in reply to: What is Traditional Archery? #24874Ben M. wrote: Like an axe that makes firewood, traditional archery is a tool that provides a subtle opportunity to find a deeper meaning in a necessary act. It is a means not just of providing for yourself and your family, but of realizing that you, too, are part of the system upon which your existence relies.
This is exactly how I see it as well. My favorite thing in this world is being in the woods on a crisp autumn night – but what makes that experience infinitely times better is not just being IN the woods, but being ONE with the woods.
Carrying traditional gear while I sit in the woods makes me feel like I belong there; as if a deer were to walk by, it may notice me and be totally fine with my presence because I am in essence everything that’s pure about hunting in its most natural form.
I also can agree with you guys on the “elitist” idea. I would rather hunt with my recurve for 10 years and cleanly, ethically, and humanely harvest one deer at 6 yards than use my compound and kill 3 deer every season but risk a bad shot or tempt Murphy’s law at 80 yards.
Not only is traditional a state of mind, but also a state of being.
in reply to: Quality, yet affordable knife suggestions? #24835Thanks for all the help guys!
Looks like I have tons of great options now.
Feel free to add as many as you like, I’m sure I’m not the only one with a budget out there 😆
in reply to: Bucket list hunt #20302Either bear or deer in Alaska, or elk and mountain goat in Montana or Colorado.
Wow, that was about 6 different combinations, but I’m not stingy 😆
in reply to: How do I straighten wood arrows? #20267Thanks for all of the responses guys. Dr. Ashby, that definitely sounds like the best and easiest option, but I think I’ll give all of your suggestions a try and see which works best 😀
