Thank you for that post, Richard. It was very informative. I’m probably not going to worry about point-on distance right now. I don’t look at my arrow at all. I focus only on the target; at best, my bow and arrow are vague objects in my peripheral vision. Seems to be working so far.

in reply to: Building that EFOC & UEFOC arrow #160467Slowly but surely, I’m getting there. I’ve been working hard on my form and have got it pretty well set. Easton Carbon Legacy arrows, 34” length from valley of nock to back of point. 500 spine; 125 gr points gets me a FOC of 12% with fletching and everything. At 20 yards, it shoots about 6” left. Swapped out the points for some 225 gr field points and got a FOC of 21%. Also moved the group to just about center line.
125 gr points- consistently left of the line at 20 yards. The orange dot is 2”
225 gr points are pretty much centered at 20 yards. Need to get out of the backyard and stretch it out farther…
in reply to: Totally new here… #160301Yeah, he’s still around. Jarbidge is a neat little place, though no one knows where the heck it is. I also tend to haunt City of Rocks and the South Hills pretty frequently…

I’ll do some digging; thankfully there are a couple of trad hunters here in town that have taken me under their wing, so to speak. I have read Dr Ed’s broad head studies, so I’ve got a decent grasp of the concepts. Definitely looking forward to putting them into practice.
in reply to: Totally new here… #160286I’m from the sagebrush steppes of Southern Idaho, born and raised. My first and only bow to date is a Ragim Wildcat takedown recurve. 28# @28”, 68” length. Probably pulling closer to 40#, as my wingspan equates to a 32” draw…
in reply to: Building that EFOC & UEFOC arrow #160281Gonna bump this and ask a question or two. I’m new to archery, and working my way toward bow hunting. I understand the value of tuning an arrow, much like one would work up a load for a rifle. The problem is that I’m pretty severely limited on my ability to tune the length of an arrow, bein’ as I’m 6’6” tall and have a 32” draw. My current setup is 28# at 28”, and 500 spine carbons with 125gr points yield a ~450gr arrow at 12% FOC. For hunting, I’ll need to have 40# at 28” and I’d like to have a 650-700gr arrow, minimum. What’s the best way to go heavier and not have to muck with length as much?
