in reply to: WHICK WOOD WOULD YOU US #28927
Hickory. It’s straight, strong and good for bows.
in reply to: How to make a long bow #28925I would check to see if there is a traditional archery club in your state. Perhaps some willing members of a club in the state would be willing to show you the ropes. It seems like the logical thing for them to do.
in reply to: PAYING FOR PERFORMANCE OR NAME? #21230I am usually not much into Corvette bows. Some time ago I decided to take a lap with a then (18 months ago) 450 dollar take down bow made by Ernie McKenzie (then out of Lolo,MT). I believe they are 550 now.. Ernie makes a fine bow. As smooth shooting and fast as anything I will ever need from a bow. http://sapphirearchery.com He is highly recommended from me in the realm of good performance bows.
I believe you can get a real fine bow for less than 750. If it’s too fancy you might not want to use it in the woods because you’ll fear cosmetic injury.
Shop around.
in reply to: Happy Thanksgiving Everyone! #18693You too, Good luck if you go out on a hunt this weekend too.
in reply to: Hunting Knives #18460I like custom knives made locally. Additionally I have a larger knife for cutting big chunks of muscle and flesh. Usually I carry only a single knife unless I go elk hunting. Then I carry two and a sharpener.
I had Steve Tormala make this one a year ago. It has a good handle and matches one of my longbows. http://www.rain-shadow.com/knives/Gallery.htm
in reply to: A Confession and an Oath #16820I’ll make my confession. I hate compound bows.
The Magnus Stinger is a good broadhead. Flies well, sharp and I like that I can change the blade. Got two kills on them now and holding up well.
in reply to: twisting your own strings #16649That’s a good page. Never used a jig myself. Practice makes perfect.
in reply to: WHATS EVERYONE SHOOTING? #16221I have several bows. The first two listed seem to be my favorites for now.
Pacific Yew Longbow (2 pc take down w/sleeve) 58# @28″
Sapphire Hawk (3 pc take down) 56# @28″
Maple Self bow 60# @28″
Hickory backed Osage w/ Yew Handle 67# @28″in reply to: Take down vs one piece #15617I have a two piece take down bow which requires no tools to assemble or disassemble. It is always the first bow I grab when traveling with limited room or backpack hunting as it doesn’t require that I remember anything but the bow itself. It also assembles about 10 times as fast as my 3 piece take down. Good for when I see a bear in a meadow I can put a fast sneak on him.
in reply to: ABS Maasai single bevel broadhead give away Winner #12850Unbelievable. I actually won something.
Thanks StandingBear and the ABS. I’ll make sure to put them to good use.
in reply to: How much bow and arrow for hogs? #61974I’m about to swallow the kool aid on those wound rate claims the same way I am about to on the “random shot placement”.
I’d say the experience where people are hiring guides and chasing down deer with dogs is interesting but is that a good representation of hunters? Some of the people hiring guides need a lot more than a guide. Although not necessarily always true I do have some experiences with folks who do not even clean their own animals, or even partake in their own hunts. That’s a bigger discussion altogether. Bottom line – some people should not have a bow in their hand. Heck even a gun.
I don’t think anyone suggests that there are no animals that get wounded but I still do not believe those wound rates represent the hunting community in it’s entirety. I don’t care who published what.
in reply to: What to do? #61783Since January to fix the issue? I just can’t imagine why.
If it was me I would probably already have given up hope of him fulfilling his replacement agreement. I would probably tell everyone I knew on the internet about my experience if I truly felt ripped off. Then I might think of reporting him to the BBB.
Good luck on your journey there.
in reply to: How long should I just sit there? #61778tazimna it sounds like you have a very good situation all worked out. I am envious for certain. I am not usually a tree stand hunter for various reasons but I certainly would do it a lot more if I had the situation which you have apparently worked out for yourself.
Wanna be friends? 😆

I agree and I have to wonder if they are even really accurate representations of what happens in the world. I have not wounded that percentage of game while hunting. It seems like part of that report was made for reasoning to further regulate archery and perhaps by people who do not liker archers and or hunting. I don’t know about those studies. At this time I just cannot believe them in their entirety.
The premise of a good heavy bow and arrow is a good one. I think that each animal species may or may not require a minimum set of poundage of a bow to take down. Actually – it’s not all just poundage because that does not equate to a better killing machine if you have a bow which is less efficient. However I would bet a general rule that it is the correct road to take in the discussion of the ability to take game effectively. I just wouldn’t build my arguments on top of those “studies, reports,or whatever you want to call them”.
Bottom line I would not hunt any large game with a bow that shot less than 50 lbs draw at 28 inches. Now that’s not criticism for anyone else so don’t get defensive 😉
in reply to: Hunting camp set-ups #61541I am debating the wall tent. Used them plenty in the army. The debate is not whether or not I want one but what I have to get rid of in my small storage area in order to keep one. I think this winter that it will probably come to a conclusion.
