in reply to: Longbow vs Recurve #143151
The way I see it is to shoot one or the other or both. Either will perform as well as the shooter.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #143149Gobble, gobble…………………………..double meaning that? Turkey gobble, gobble down your turkey…………..I’m so full I ain’t thinking straight….
in reply to: Seemed like a good idea at the time. #143134I’d probably have the local law showing up to see what I was up to……if it goes boom your guilty til proven innocent.
in reply to: Don Thomas Health Issues #142848Pheasants beware!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We’re grateful all is going well it seems…
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #142684Ahhhh, swinging plastic bottles…………………we set up 5 of various sizes in our shoots sometimes. A 30 second time limit and a nickle for each one hit. Witnessed bounce off considered a hit.
We’ve had problems sometimes with wood arrow hitting wrong and breaking and also we pull after each shooter because with any breeze at all the sails (fletches) on the arrow can turn the bottle any direction and make an existing arrow in bottle a broadside sitting duck. Murphy says that 5/16 thru 23/64th inch shaft inside that bottle will be hit by another arrow.
Yup on weather. After 5″-6″ of snow the other day, lots of mud.. Have I ever said more than once that I hate mud?
Cold today and more cold coming, this time maybe with maybe snow and maybe freezing rain. The latter I hate.
A lot of people have a misconception about winters in Texas. The Panhandle is an entirely different nation. :-))…..We’re noted for blizzards and freeze your butt of winds. Maybe the wind stuff comes from that Amarillo is quite regularly the windiest spot in the country and a barbed wire fence the best windbreak around.
The other day we were the coldest area in the country. Of course that doesn’t consider high mountain stuff………………
For an old spot and stalk bowhunter………………..it would be nice to have trees to stalk through rather than knee and thigh high sagebrush and yuccas and cat claw and prickly pear and…………..but I love it. I just don’t crawl and stalk………….usually see far or fleeing critters…..every now an again things work out for me.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #142595Dark a good idea cause it’s hard to be bee nice if the things got you in their sights and they’re out to get ya. :-))
in reply to: 2019-20 season updates #142319My first go at things was trying to stalk a nice 4×4 muley buck that was escorting five lady mulies. Needless to say that didn’t get me to far along.
Couple days later I was in the same area and spotted a really nice 8 point whitetail buck roaming the higher country (?) that mulies always call home.
Umm I say, “cain’t not give this a whirl”…………. I was closing the distance, 50-60 yards, when all hell broke lose….that same muley buck was in that area also and I had not a clue. My focus was on the whitetail. The muley snorted and exploded as did the whitetail… and me too….
In this country of few trees, and a plethora of sagebrush, yuccas, prickly pear and scattered mesquite trees, stalking deer is way tough enough without a spooky audience.
But I love trying.
A mule deer buck when spooked might go for a spell then stop and look back and ‘what the….was that?.
Whitetails…. no question asked, they be goners.
I was on a ridge and could see for miles. That 8 point hit the bottom of the canyon crossed a half mile of flat land and was still going when he looked about the size of a jackrabbit.
Dunno if he’ll be back in that area.
Y’all haven’t seen the pic I took of my rifle hunting blind, we call it my “hunt hut”, getting hit by a rainbow..
Cheryl has a ‘she shed’, Ralph has a “hunt hut” :-))
There wasn’t a pot of gold in there but I did go up there and enjoy my breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee while I enjoyed nature for an hour or so.
There are different kinds of “pots of gold”.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #142182Guess what’s it’s still doing………………………….It don’t do this in Amarillo……………………….It’s day #3 that I be rained in.
in reply to: What ya got goin'? 2 #142170Season is open here in Texas……Monsoon season is open here in the panhandle……
in reply to: Danger of Dragging #142074Here’s a pic of how to use and a pic of a set I just made. That’s 1″ doweling and para-cord.
One would need to make the handles to suit one’s hand size, 6″ works for me and the cord length to suit.
They’re also handy as all get out to help get the animal in the bed of a pickup.
in reply to: Danger of Dragging #142034I use two things similar to Steve’s. If it’s a buck I put one on the base of each antler, if a doe both around the neck. With two I can spread my arms apart if needed or pull more with one than the other.
It’s rough terrain here so I need two to be able to pull with either or both arm/arms at times.
in reply to: Selway slide on bow quiver #141829Dang, we have ‘not indigenous’ species that look like us all over the place.
in reply to: Selway slide on bow quiver #141709Hey Steve, was that the Carolina’s before the hurricane season? :-))
in reply to: Selway slide on bow quiver #141706I think I got them from Black Widow, some little wide rubber band goodies that you put on the grips that hold the shaft on the bottom section of a quiver. This is a way to make up the difference in size of wood shafts down to carbon shafts for a firm grip..
I figure after seeing them it seemed that a person could be a little innovative and and improvise something similar. Like maybe several of those little rubber bands that are used on braces for teeth?????? Not giving any ideas away here>>> :-))
I had a Selway slide on that the broadheads were getting loose in the head. I diligently used some expanding foam in areas and tightened things up.
Another little trick I’m keeping to myself. :-))
I have a Vortex 10x monocular that I carry with me when I’m out stumping and whatnot. It is handy as all get out for satisfying my curiosity and to convince myself that I’m seeing what I think I’m seeing……or not..
I put a clip on the the little strap so I can hook it on a belt loop or a loop on my side quiver.
It’s way handier when just out and about than a binoc hanging around my neck.
