in reply to: arrow spine gauge #61664
Or you can do like my “buddy” does and “I’ll just send these home with you and you can test these for me”. Bull#@*&. My good buddy, sitting on his tailgate, cigarette in hand speaks up and says “…you know they sell those things don’t ya”. Ha! Last time I was ask. Thanks good buddy!!! Other tightwad just doesn’t spine test his arrows now. :D:D
in reply to: Worried About Myself #61080Take 12 deep breathes, go shoot 12 arrows, and dream about twelve slow cooked backstrap steaks…….. I can play with 12 stepping as I’ve been there.
Actually, hunting has gotten to be more just a loving to be out there than it has the taking of the game the past few years. I still live on pins and needles as season approaches, I spend hours getting everything ready that already is, sleep little the night before, then I just get tickled that I’m out and about seeing what I can see. I still take game but it’s not the driving force it once was.
50’s gives you a long time to enjoy life while hunting and that can be done way more so with out the kill syndrome dominating.
“Be well my friend” as “The most interesting man in the world” states.
There was a time when empty handed was a bad thing, nowadays, I had a good day cause I was there. Mostly anyway, getting stuck ain’t got many good sides 😆
in reply to: BUILDING THE BOW #59901Maybe there be a tomb over in the Sahara somewhere full of broken bows. 😕 Or Broken Bow, Oklahoma:roll:
Quite the interesting read.
I be one of the “y’all” folk, down Texas way!:D
in reply to: Reducing draw weight #59689“This is a sketch of a cross section of how I make my limbs. It isn’t exact because I did it on paintbrush, but it’ll give you the idea of how I trap my limbs. It is a trapazoidal shape. The angles on the sides are the actual “trapping” cut. Most guys don’t make them quite as pronounced as I do but I think they look good that way. I mark the side of my limbs 1/3 down from the top all the way down the limb, then mark the back at those points the same distance from the edge that I marked down from the back…if that makes any sence. I use a 45 degree angle.”
This I copied and pasted from whence I find picture. Hope it make “sence” 😆
in reply to: Reducing draw weight #59687I’m not the artist, I dug this up, but here is what it looks like. Hope it’s clearer than mud.
in reply to: Reducing draw weight #58365Hey Ernest from what I know that might not be the way to go. See if I can kind of do this: You need to put a strip of masking tape, on the face of the bow, midways between fade out & tip of both limbs and midways between that point and tips. String bow, measure your brace height, distance from string, top and bottom limbs, to inside of bow in both places taped and record measurements. With unstrung bow it’s a tedious process of taking wood down, on the trap is what I do, like 10 strokes, with fairly rough file, on each limb side. You’ll get the feel but be nice to the bow as you learn. I do maybe 10 strokes twice on each of the 4 limb sides then restring bow and check all your marks. You can tell then if you be doing more or less on either end. I always go for the bottom limb to be a 1/16″ to 1/8″ closer to the string than the top (bottom limb stiffer). When you get close to your goal, go finer with your tools and sandpaper like with any project.
There may be other bows that differ but my old buddy of Yellow Jacket longbows was very particular about tiller and thus am I.
I have only managed to get 4#’s max weight reduction. Be careful, be gentle and don’t get in a hurry. I did trap the opposite side of one bow from what was original to get a bit more weight off. Worked. I still shoot it a lot. 52# down to 48#.
A recurve is totally different. You take “meat” off of the insides of the limb. I’ve only done one recurve and I’m glad it still shoots great cause it worried me that I might not have had a clue what I was doing.
Any help from you guys on methodology or if I expressed myself incorrectly, please. Thanks, Ralph. Good luck.
in reply to: On The Wild Edge #58272Well said. And you lucky dog, my wife associates me with Looney Tunes. :D:D
in reply to: Aussie turkeys #58117Maybe they saw something in you that the others didn’t. The predator, I’ll eat you side or something. There’s an aura that hangs around trad archers you know!!!!
in reply to: Reducing draw weight #57543Thanks, that’s what I was going to do, just needed a confidence booster. Was kinda concerned about trapping some more on the boo/Osage joint. Little bit at a time it will be for sure. Thanks again, Ralph.
in reply to: You've got to be kidding me!!! #55057“(thankfully, it says not to use when the vehicle is moving)”.
Even in granny gear? Some things best not left to pile up too much. 😆
Now where were we??
Ahh! Arrow bang sticks. That pretty much sucks to say it like any mild mannered Texan might put it. My daddy used to say “Put all the stupid in a bottle and hopefully there’d be some of us left to put the cork in it”.
in reply to: Broadheads, left bevel or right bevel? #54222I was just playing:D:D Whoops. I think your right though. My asterisks were on purpose as I thought yours were. I didn’t know there were any other kinds of files forever as a youth other than a round or triangular file.
in reply to: I just bought my first longbow. #54183Jim, I’m no instructer or expert or anything, just been shooting long, long, long time:lol:. I’m even older than David Peterson and we’ve seen some old dirt for sure. Most people shoot recurves with a high wrist and longbows with a low wrist. I was trying to shoot my longbow with a high wrist when the meaty part of my left hand (bow hand) was buggered up this past fall and winter. I was somewhat successful by curling and tucking my little finger against the bow. I had problems keeping the bow from torquing on me doing this however. I was only shooting like this because I couldn’t stand not shooting for very long. Anyway, by design of the bows this is what is. I might get some different thoughts and opinions but …… I’ll pm you to show you what my problem was. It’s ugly!
in reply to: I just bought my first longbow. #54140Would not be a happy thing to be broken. The “luck” be with you! And I’m telling you, you’ll get hooked. Remember though, the way you grasp the bow will be different than that of a recurve if you’ve not shot one before.
in reply to: I just bought my first longbow. #53928You’ll get hooked!!!! 😀 One piece it is too hopefully.
I’ll get on a recurve kick now and then and I actually shoot a bit better with one but I always end up back with my longbows. Plus and minuses for each but preference scores the most.
Enjoy!!!!!!
in reply to: Broadheads, left bevel or right bevel? #53033David speaks..
“And by the way, we are allowed to speak of b*****d files here.”
Can we be more specific on this type of file for these young innocent ears here? 😆 Ah! Buzzard file…
Now to further this for serious, someone with artistic skills might show which is R vs. L bevel of a broadhead for all of our information. I’m thinking from what I read that my old original Grizzly heads should not have worked for my left wing fletches. 😉 Not debating, just being an ornery old b*****d f**t!!!
