Referring to another thread and Art Young shooting three under perhaps…………….

Years ago I had some friends in Dalhart, Tx, archery buddies. The father/stepfather of the two was a sometimes shooting companion of Mr. Fred Bear.

The stepson, Jim, actually won some international competitions with his longbow/recurve. I don’t exactly recall being 40ish years ago.

Karl, the son never got into trad but he was quite proficient with the early wheel bows.

Kelly, the father, was quite proficient with his recurve. I was getting back into trad and I was way impressed.

I shot split in those days and have mostly since until here recently I’m experimenting with three under and it’s actually working (knock on wood) (or I could pun it “nock on wood” since I shoot mostly wood arrows) :-}.  I think..

Anyway, to make a story shorter, Kelly one day gave me one of his tabs.  It was different. I didn’t know what to do with it.

Unfortunately Kelly passed before I could get back with him to see “wat the hey”. So I just continued on my merry way of not knowing anything about or getting exposed to shooting three under. As it turned out, as I grew more educated, it was a three under tab.

Point to make, three under has been used for a long while and not just for the target archers.

I can tell another tale sometime about one of these fellers and his cousin and not driving off with the truck (my truck) until the whereabouts of all the group is know.   GRRRRRR!!!!!!

Not old pic but some very good (old) info from years past.

Gives me an idea for a new topic so as not to steal Jim’s.

Shoulda ‘thunk’ to mention that…Thanks Steve…………..

On shorter bows, which will have a more acute angle at the draw point, I sometimes put the “nail knot” and the “clinch knot” above the nock just to help keep things from slipping and one or the other below also.  I use both knots.. Really no preference.

I’m not (bout to be enough knot-nots here?) one of the elite archers where the one foot per second an extra knot might slow my arrow speed down is a worry.  I’d rather my “rear site” be where it oughta be.

Curious, you go by Steph or Steve for short?

Probably best I don’t hear what people call me for short.. ;-))

I was planning a trip to Leedey, OK tomorrow but since it’s 186 miles each way, 80-90% forecast rain, it be a bit far to go say hi and shoot maybe one round of 3D , score cards in by 2PM, and drive home.

Today I could go but having company passing through and I’m having pain pangs for 16 yr old gson that had his wisdom teeth remove yesterday.. Ouch.

I like this adjustable knot.  I put one above and one below then both can be moved as I tune my bow.

Jim, from an old guy I promise, not everything is forgotten’.

When I first went bow hunting in the Texas panhandle, like 1966-67, I knew very little about the area other than that some of public land was on the Canadian River north of town about 20 miles. Also, I knew very little about bow hunting. I’d rifle hunted in Idaho for the years I lived there, my bow of the time was only used for missing shots at rabbits..

I had driven the to area where I planned to go hunt, very little road access, and had decided when I went to hunt I’d get there way early, trek way back up some big  canyons and poke around for mule deer (at that point in my life I’d never seen a whitetail deer in real life).

So here I go, way early, I mean so early that a sheriff deputy stopped me on the hiway to check me out. He said normally only people headed home from the bar are out and about at that time of the day.

Anyway I get to my parking spot, saddle up and take off into the dark unknown. Good to have picked a moonless morning, duh. Flashlights of those days were bright enough to see where your feet were, not where they might be headed.

I get back in the canyons and still at least an hour before daylight so I settle into some sagebrush and go to sleep.

Later I was rudely awoke by by a deer that had stumbled across ‘my bedding area’ and had a snorting and stomping good time figuring out ‘what the hey’!!! When I rapidly sat up all I saw was a long white tail in full erection hauling butt.  That was all the action I saw that morning, a rude awakening and a glimpse of my first whitetail deer.

Now for the bugs……………..that night and the following morning were total itching agony…What???????? I had no idea………

I went to a pharmacist and showed him some of the welts I had (I just showed some, I had welts from the neck down and, I swear, a billion in the area of the unmentionables).  He grinned and said those are chiggers my friend. I don’t know what he sold me but even the temporary relief was a blessing.

All the years I tromped the California hills, the Colorado mountains and the southern Idaho mountains (mentioned I was an AF brat so we were everywhere, along with a 3 year stretch in Morocco (another tale sometime, I graduated from high school over there) I had never encountered or heard of a chigger.

I hate’em!!!!!!!!!!!!! And the little suckers :-)) spread the word that my blood was tasty and to this day they still seek me out.

Jim, Texas is like your part of the world, lots of bite ya’s, sting ya’s and poke ya’s.

Most places I go hunt, I worry not about all the de-scent stuff and all. Hunt into the wind and go for it.

I do not like a full body itch and don’t plan on inviting another.  Hurrah for insect repellent..

P.S.  The mountains and hills SE of Timberon, NM. has a rather hungry herd of chiggers also…

I find the thickness of leather I like and make my own tabs.. Only one layer of leather. The tabs with two layers, or three like Black Widow tabs, can make noise when the layers of material slap together after the release.

I do also shoot with a glove with my hunting bows by the way. Works better for me with higher poundage.

Self does take a bare finger shot now and then just to prove to self that self can do it but also as a reminder for self to always have  spare tabs or gloves stuck in several places in self’s belongings in case self goes off trekking and self has forgotten tab or glove because bare finger shooting hurts self’s fingers big time.  :-))

Hey Jim, glad you’re back.  Been awhile..

I just been gettin’ older, shootin’ bows, lovin’ life and mostly stayin’ outta trouble.

Went to the ranch (lease) today snooping and low and behold my favorite hunting area is full of yearling calves. Hallelujah…bunch of teenage cows……crap….

Maybe they’ll find somewhere to sell’em soon.

Anyway, glad your back and waiting to see what comes out of the land down under…
