in reply to: Spring fever #47278
You guys got snow and ice and can’t do much. Me, we have a couple of forecast days of high winds, 60 mph, and extreme wildfire danger and I won’t go out in that. Wildfires scare the pea-wadding outta me and that kind of wind not fit for anything.
I hope your thawing starts soon and is slow enough that floods won’t be too bad this year.
Might have to change turkey hunting tactics a bit.:D
in reply to: Signs of Spring? #46368in reply to: Home practice range #44993This is “Stumpy”. My gunnysack’s sprung a leak.
This is “Droopy”. I think maybe my bag behind him may surprise me with a baby target before long.
I can shoot 44 yards in my back yard but I keep it under 20 yards as further is too hard on my fence. 😆
I guess I’ll go to Gebo’s and get some more tow sacks.
in reply to: brace height problems? #44225Ditto 8 1/4″ on Sage.:D
in reply to: Brace Height #44109A fastflite string made a world of difference in noise on my Sage.
Jim’s method of string silencers is good. Just remember every bow will probably be a tad different so the placement may vary somewhat.
Have fun.

in reply to: Out of Place Critters #41791Once upon time, I was the out of place critter and I’m glad I’m still here to tell of it. Many moons ago, an old friend, Gary, and I were bow hunting west of Gunnison Co., on the north side of the Blue Mesa Reservoir. I don’t remember which creek we were on but we beat ourselves up in his old Datsun 4X4 pickup getting in there.
Anyway it was late evening, dusk closing in fast and I was oozing my way back to camp when I spied Gary doing the same. “Aha” goes my immature little brain, “watch this” and I hunker down behind a tree. Then along comes Gary. I let out a big old roar and Gary turns around pulling to full draw and I’m whizzing in my britches. I’m glad he was young and quick on the “undraw” too or it could’ve been ugly.
A deal like that would’ve scared the fire out of anyone but little did I know he had just made a detour around a momma bear and a couple of cubs.
We never did laugh about that episode, it was a serious lesson in life for me.
in reply to: How do you draw? #41766It’s draw, aim, release, anchor ain’t it? 😀
I’m shooting three under these days and doing way better. Why after 30+ years????
I usually use the swing draw, mostly finishing my draw as my bow arm is raised, all the while staring down what I want to hit. I have a lean face with high cheekbones and when my finger touches the bottom of my nose, that’s my split second of collecting thoughts, I then pull another inch or so and when my hand is cupped around my cheekbone I release.
The last year or so I’ve been struggling some though and I finally figured out that when I think on it I screw it up.
I don’t know why some people think if you’re shooting three under that you’re looking at the point of your arrow. Peripherally it’s there I know, like pointing your finger, a ghost image. If I ever consciously look at the point of my arrow I’m screwed. That’s when the draw, aim, release, anchor happens.
I’m so dang far sighted I have to really work on seeing the tip of my arrow anyway so no sense in checking it out.
There are times when one has to extend one’s arm then draw and anchor, usually due to obstructions that prevent the swing draw or as Doc says, not to attract attention by movement. So I practice that way also.
in reply to: Spring fever #40774Hey Col, maybe I was shootin at the gap! 😀 Yeah, uh.
in reply to: Twisted one up #40759Duncan, would we use flying squirrels for lighter weight bow strings? 😀
in reply to: Spring fever #40711Nice shootin’. Spring fever biting me too. I’m ready too to see some turkeys. Maybe the 40+ bird herd I was chasing last fall will be hanging around this spring. I was only wantin’ one of them:D. I could’ve had a bird using other weapons but I doubt I ever shoot another unless with one my trad bows.
Hope you enjoy and do well.
Ralph
Dang it!
