in reply to: Dean Torges goes to the Happy Hunting Ground #40015
I need to pick up a copy of his book. thanks for the link. He seems to be a great person who led an exemplary life.
in reply to: 2 Good PA Bucks #39744Great deer! Even more impressive that you were both using “low” poundage bows.
in reply to: winter target range #64021Memories of the frigid cold have recessed deeply into my brain, it’s hard to extract them. Nice video, I don’t think I could shoot with all those clothes on.
in reply to: Treestands #62189I just talked with Screaming Eagle, and they are definitely still in business. I’m planning on picking one of these up this winter. Thanks for all the suggestions folks.
What about safety harnesses? Any suggestions, again weight and quality considerations.
in reply to: winter target range #40652Yeah I definitely don’t miss that freezing rain. We don’t get that strong of winds. When the wind does blow it’s nerve racking with all the tree limbs falling. But the tarp won’t get blown around too much. But if that member we have on here from the Nunavut chimes in he’ll put us all to shame complaining about our winters.
in reply to: Hunting 2016 #34902I certainly wouldn’t tell anyone with hearing loss that they couldn’t have hearing aids. And I think on this forum most everybody already has a high ethical standard. However, hearing aids as a hunting tool for young folks with no ear issues really drives me nuts. A guy I know who was hunting for his first time this year was using all the gadgets and new camo. Luckily, he was hunting some private land and the owner of the property killed a deer while wearing blue jeans and a flannel. That got him thinking he might not need all this stuff he bought.
in reply to: winter target range #28725Yeah yeah we don’t have snow. BUT the sun doesn’t touch our house for the next 3 months.
in reply to: Not at all like- Deliverance #22922Great adventure!
in reply to: Hunting 2016 #49642Sorry to hear that Ralph. My friend just put down one of his best waterfowl dogs. It was pretty tough on him too.
in reply to: Back to Basics #32542I am almost all the way through reading this recent volume, and it is a good one. I really have enjoyed the contributions Krista and Sterling have made to TBM.
in reply to: Hunting set-up for 2016-2017 #59521Let’s see. I am shooting Greg Coffey’s Elkheart longbow, drawing 50 lbs at my draw length. Gold Tip traditional shafts. STOS broadheads.
in reply to: Big storm, acorns on the ground, bears. #17787I’m hanging with a vet, and she says this eye film is called corneal edema. It is a fluid in the membrane over the eye. Not cataracts.

I heard about the auto insurance companies pressuring game agencies. Mostly in the east, but it’s an issue all over. I am also worried because The Wildlife Society and biologists are talking about moving away from public hunting as a management tool and using private sharp shooters to reduce white-tailed deer populations. I understand that it’s especially hard to draw bow hunters into suburban neighborhoods to shoot does and fawns (can’t use rifles in city limits right), but I think it would erode the hunting opportunities and tradition. It’s a topic that is on the periphery of most western hunters, but something we all should be watching and discussing.
Good luck with the coyotes, current belief is you’ll have to remove 75% of the population to make a difference.

It’s a rare year I don’t have to pick up my gun to fill the freezer. Hunting with a gun is a different game. To me, it can still add joy to life. We just can’t make it into more than it is.
Now that the kids are off to school and we don’t need so much meat, it will be interesting to see if I pick up the gun this year, for old times sake anyway.
Yeah you’re right Steve, it’s still hunting when you use a rifle, which is fun.
