in reply to: Chauvet Cave Documentary #57595
It’s on my to-do list visit the caves, I dont think visitors can go in but there are recreations at a visitors center.
Reading about the paintings they used the natural rock formation to extenuate the shape of the animal so the paintings appear to change viewed from different angles, all painted by the light of a smokey touch, extraordinary, will definatley watch the documentary again.
But even to survive their understanding of the natural world must have been vast and passed on with no written text that we are aware of, possibly a limited vocabulary, but they flourished and created art.
I’ve never found an arrow head or stone tools but I do have a single stone bead and it fires my imagination to hold it, I can guess how it was made but what was it used for and by who?

in reply to: Ground Game #57582I agree with all that’s been said about commercial blinds, additionally adding heat will set up convection currents and carry your scent not good on a cold still morning.
Friend of mine used an old metal bucket, air holes around the base and rim lit a candle turned the bucket upside down and sat on it, said it worked well but could get a bit too warm.

in reply to: Shooting Videos #56025Interesting to see that his bow arm/shoulder pushes forward slightly as he begins to draw but that he says not to extend the bow arm at full draw.
Niether does his string arm elbow appear to be pushed back, is this just his style or is the bow very low draw weight.

in reply to: Backyard Wildlife #55996We have a cat, not ‘our’cat, drives the spaniels nuts as it walks along the fence.
Then there was the world’s most discoordinated pigeon I honestly saw it fall out of a tree and get stuck down the side of the greenhouse, rescued it from there so it thought it would set up home. It had no idea about nest building there was just a pile of sticks under the tree. The dogs just laid and watched it waddling around the garden.

in reply to: Memorial Day reflections #48202Late as ever, Mrs P and I are in France a few years ago we visited a Commonwealth War Grave and have made a point of visiting them each year since. This year we visited a civilian cemetery in the Morvan National Park were four airmen are buried two Brits an Ozzie and a Kewi, the two remaining members of the crew were taken care of by local people and the resistance helped them to Spain from where they were repatriated, it took them a year.
I guess they don’t get many visitors but the graves are tended and local people maintain a plaque along with a storyboard to commemorate their sacrifice.
My youngest son is in the RAF, it’s always a time for contemplation.

in reply to: I want to scream #12643Problem is, from my perspective, that we know nothing about the child that was taking the shot beyond what JM has described. She may be a very accomplished archer having accompanied family and friends hunting for a few years,or she may be a novice archer and dads decided he’s going to take his little angle hunting.
Poor hit, mechanical head mashed (but then I wouldn’t rely on those things to bust a balloon) did they attempt to follow it up? did the father take responsibility, what lessons did they learn.
A kid of that age has may be 50 years hunting ahead of her, kids need ethical ground rules if they are going to grow into the responsible hunters of tomorrow.
Clay, have a great weekend.
in reply to: Southwest DIY Javelina Hunts? #11712I make that about 1500 miles (according to goggle maps)
Take care gentlemen and good hunting.
in reply to: Does it really matter ? #49301Iron Bull, only thing I can suggest your guide/outfitter forefathers may have used this to discourage customers from killing game when it can become quickly frozen and difficult to skin and process. Beyond that I can only agree with the earlier replies.
If you guys ever get to Piccadilly Circus I’ll be sure to buy the beers and we can watch the world go by.
