in reply to: keeping warm #57331
I was told years ago ‘take something off before you get hot and put something on before you get cold ‘and I always try to do that, it saves building up sweat that only cools you down when you rest.
I’m another fan of Moreno wool and then more wool, I also have a wool pullover that my wife knitted for me before we were married so that’s over 26 years ago it is almost bullet proof but great to get into when things get a wee bit chilly.
I use a shooting glove and over that a wool glove with two fingers cut out, it’s not perfect but works OK adds a bit of insulation and colour but the shooting fingers can get a bit cold latter in the season.
A trick for warming cold hands is plunge them into water a stream or deep puddle and let them air dry, the body senses the sudden drop in temperature to the extremities and sends warm blood from the core, works for me but I had to grit my teeth the first time I did it.

in reply to: Problems with my release again !!!!!! #54836I get this high and wide problem and finally figured it was anchor, I have two points of reference tip of my middle finger on the incisor, first joint of my thumb in the hollow below my ear. If I’m still not hitting what I’m aiming at its focus and that just requires a mental kick in the rear.
I know how frustrating this can be so I hope this might be of help.

Congratulations on an excellent post, I’ve been hunting for 30+ years and it never hurts to recap on the points that you have mentioned and for anyone starting out it’s a must read article.

Just read your post it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Next time buddy, Mark.in reply to: Crawling with a bow #50749Hi Sscoyote
Crawling on hands and knees, try slinging the bow diagonally across your front, use any old piece of cord with two generous loops either end as a sling across your back. This works well keeps your profile and amplified movement low, it allows you to unsling the bow without any movement above the bodyline.
Crawling prone takes a bit more practice but lay the bow across the back of your forearms with your thumb through the bow sting, its really awkward but the only way I’ve found to work.
Good luck and get some knee protectors from the hardware store.

Debate v Argument
You can’t compare commercial programming and public service TV.
Commercial programming is there to entertain us, you may occasionally be ‘informed’ but it aint goin to happen every day, it’s designed to appeal to a wide audience and generally the lowest common denominator.
Instructional videos are just that sit down pay attention pause rewind learn.
Personally I like a mixed diet.
Having been chastised for making a ‘comment’ about an earlier post I better leave things there.

in reply to: Anniversary issue is out! #25596Mine arrived yesterday, it’s been hidden so that I have something to read on vacation.
Any other time that would be grounds for divorce.

There are some folks that will argue with the guy in the shaving mirror, don’t bite, his meds just need reviewing.

in reply to: Sharpening question for Standing bear or Ron #19685Completely off topic but that’s the way my brain is wired.
Dave used the term “full 9 yards” for those that might be interested, during WW1 Vickers machineguns were fed with belts 9 yards long and when things got a bit hairy the command was ‘give em the whole 9 yards’.
Sorry about the diversion but the whole subject of where terms such as this come from fascinates me.

in reply to: NRA pros and cons #16689Hi All
Fascinating debate, I live in the UK where things are a little different, the majority of people have only ever seen guns on the TV so their idea of a hunting rifle is an M16 and they believe that a .223 round will blow up a car.
The majority of my friends hunt and fish to different degrees but those that don’t are always fascinated to find that I have a cupboard full of rifles and shotguns and treat them almost like pornography they really want to look and touch but aren’t sure if they should, always makes me laugh. Some will come clay pigeon shooting when the offer is made or to the range and very occasionally hunting.
Bowhunting has been banned for many years so we have to travel for everything, France is about 3-8 hours depending on the port or tunnel I leave from so it’s not so far and the tradition of taking a bow to France goes back to the middle ages (they don’t like to be reminded of that) but I have always found the French to be good companions and hosts. A bit off subject but what I was getting round to is the look on people’s faces when I tell them I’m going bow hunting for wildboar, that’s when all look at me as if I’m mad.
Back to your debate, you may consider how and why the current legislation came to be in place and the context that it was made in. How that legislation has been amended and why and what amendments to it are right and proper and will benefit those that inherit your legislative system in 50 and 100 years time.
Don’t get so caught up in the present that you lose site of the whole picture, just the observations of one who has been fighting this battle for 35 years.

Last night I watched a documentary ‘Gun Nation’ I can’t see how you start to review any of the US firearms legislation. More confused than ever now. Mark. -
