in reply to: This may be a dumb question but.. #59006
Hi Arthur
A couple of observations based upon my own experience when setting up with new arrows, remove string silencers and adjust the brace height until the arrows fly nicely and someone stood close by can tell you that the bow is at its quietest then add string silencers.
Skirk suggested heterodyning its simple and works. If you make your own wool bundles be generous make a good size silencer.
Look forward to hearing how you get on, Mark.

The finish on my Dwyer long bow has finally hardened so I can set about scrapping it off over the holidays.
The lower insert on my Bear bow came loose last weekend so I filled the hole with epoxy and can now drill a new one for the insert.
Christmas shopping……………might have to work this weekend after all.

in reply to: I draw the line way, way before helicopters #13586I guess it comes down to the individual and his/her hunting ethics once they arrive by whatever mode of transport.
I would hope its not a day-trip, back to the hotel in time for drinks and dinner, but then if it were a days fishing to some remote spot that I would otherwise never have the opportunity to visit would I turn down the opportunity? is that me exhibiting double standards and going to get me banned from the trad community! but then I don’t consider myself a fisherman just a man with a fishing rod (fish are mostly safe from me).
KUIU have a good reputation and I would like to read their response.

in reply to: Ducks, Politics and Money #45977It appears that Don may not be the only one to come under fire from ‘land grabbers’ in Montana
In August there was a concerted attempt by the US Forest Service to close two mines and force the families of their claims, it was only the intervention of some very dedicated individuals that eventually made the USFS finally back down
Is there a link?

I’m sure I have a book at home that shows a Finn using cross country skies and carrying a bear spear, I’ll dig it out tonight.

in reply to: Ducks, Politics and Money #56801I hope that DU have the character to stand up to Mr. James Cox Kennedy.
DU have done so much for conservation, hunting and ensuring that future generations have somewhere to hunt, it is a great shame to see their reputation ruined in such a manner.
I like to think that DU can see the value of Dons contribution outweighs Mr. Kennedy’s.

in reply to: Suggestions: History of Archery Books #44696Hi Mike, a bit early to write the history of the current 100 years war, although it would be nice to think that the introduction might be written by somebody that was there.
The lessons have been leant time and again by the common man.

by Juliet Barker
I recomend this, well researched and well written.
The Time Traveller’s Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century
By Ian Mortimer
This is a bit early but gives a good insight to the life of my ancestors, its a wonder any of us survived.
Most of the accounts of the 100 years war were written by Heralds or scribes employed by nobles so may be a bit bias, or totally inaccurate. Those written by the church are a little better but you need to be more dedicated than me to read them.
Unfortunately there is little recorded about the common man that was often ‘volunteered’ to go to France.
