What was the catch and release? Just as an amusing anecdote I was poking around the woods years ago and saw a squirrel a long way down a hill. I decided to be a wise guy and threw a rock at him. It was a LONG ways and I had an arm back then:) To my amazement it hit him and he starts thrashing and then stops. I said “OMG I killed him”. I get up to him and he’s still breathing, just knocked out. A few minutes later he comes to and wobbles back up a tree. Wouldn’t happen a again in a million years if I tried!

Here’s a few pics – not much of a camp really, just pulled into a State run campground for access to H2O, etc. I want to get a bumper sticker that says “I Am Older Than My Camper”! The other’s a stand site I found that I liked, albeit 3 days into the trip, and last a doe that trotted in while I still had my bow on the ground attached to the rope. Hope the files aren’t too big, I’m not a great re-sizer.

Mine go LOW! “UGGGHHH!” says Charlie Brown. I have missed a few shots in the last couple years at a couple very nice bucks. They go a whisker low and I could cry every time. Maybe I’m overcompensating for the tree stand shot, but I think I have issues locking onto a spot – I’m actually sure that’s the problem. I’ve actually shot a number of deer with my old compound but had my issues with that for the same reason. I’m really in the dumps lately on overcoming this.

Well, I did lots of scouting since it was a new area….weather was fair to good…to sum it up 2 deer sighted , 1 wolf, a few bald eagles and a big old owl! No meat in the freezer but I figured as much going in cold. I continue on my loser streak, but don’t much care:) A bad analogy maybe, but my little camper was kinda like the lunar lander – my base camp and I did little :space walks” in unknown territory all week. Thank God for GPS – now if they could make them in a laminated wood look:)

Thank you. I actually wrote “aim small” on the inside of the limb in orange fingernail polish a couple weeks ago as a constant reminder since I’ve had an “issue” or two with a couple clean misses.

Here in west Michigan I’d say pretty good. We’ve had no issues with drought, the crops, wild or not, seem to have done well, so there’s plenty of food out there. Acorns don’t look anywhere near as heavy as last year, but that’s normal. Overall, I’d say looks about the same as recent years. I usually don’t have much problem at least seeing deer, and I’m stuck on State Land here around home. Heading to the U.P. in late October too, so the best time of the year is here!

I think it’s natural to have less “fire for the kill as we get older. I’ve read that for the thousands of years our species hunted for our food, if you lived to 40 or so you were an old man on average. By the time you were that old the young ones were doing the bulk of the hunting. The conclusion being there is some evidence for lack of a hunting drive in older people because that drive did not survive to middle age. In a nutshell, that makes sense to me. I just turned 50 last winter and while I still enjoy success, I’m not driven like I used to be to achieve it. A good day among the fall colors with some hope of seeing your game is glorious, and if I miss getting up for those o’dark thirty missions once in a while I don’t beat myself up about it.

Here you go. Jim Reynolds’ Hunter model longbow. 45#. Carbon Express Heritage 150’s. 125 gr Magnus broadhead. I missed a big Mi. buck last year with a less than the best set up (still only a few years into this) – waah! This year I hope to poke him in the ribs with this:)

It’s been a long time for me, but I used to hunt that area too. We would back pack in from Lake Durant up into the Stephens Pond area. That whole Blue Ridge range area was just a nice wild mess to get into and I know there are possibilities in country that big.

That would be fine but then somebody would re-invent the stone- put sights on them, make them out of graphite, sell accessories…:?

I got back from a trip to Vegas last week. I’m no gambler at all but I played the slots just a little. You hit a jackpot with your day! I can see the reels spinning and landing on a point and a hog and the bells and whistles going off! Cool!

Hey Guys – thanks for all the advice, it’s very generous! I got sidetracked in getting back to this site w a trip to Vegas for my 50th b’day. I’m curious, having really no experience with a recurve, on how much more difficult or not they are to shoot? The longbow is challenging, enough that I want to throw in the towel half the time. Not sure I want any more challenges:wink:

Killdeer – I have a Jim Reynolds Thunderstick, 62″ length. 45# @ 28″. Thanks to for your very generous replies!

The Whitefish Point area has to be one of the toughest areas in the whole state. How do you do up there? Probably not the Porkies for me. Reports out of that area don’t sound so good these days. I’ve poked around some areas in Dickinson county that might be pretty entertaining?
