in reply to: Out of Place Critters #39369Reading through these had me recalling how stunned I was as a young guy to see a flying squirrel land on a tree in front of my flashlight beam one fall. Despite all my time in the woods I never knew they were common to the area.

They must be messed up this year? I saw some like that @ 2 weeks ago. Not the norm in my experience anyway.

Turns out a few years before a local game farm had imported several Fallow Deer with out the proper permits and had a fence malfunction before the DEC showed up to haul off the illegal aliens.
Knew it wasn’t a whitetail – and we have enough problem with invasive species. It was impounded and checked for rabies and tuberculosis (who knew?) and I got the meat and rack, but not the rest of the head. Several still unaccounted for.
That’s a Roe deer right?

in reply to: Bows on the Big Screen #13298Oh! And that scene in The Gladiator where, again, Russell Crowe has the Roman army raining flaming arrows and Greek fire down on the biker type Barbarians!
in reply to: Bows on the Big Screen #13294Black Robe. A Native drills a grouse with an arrow.
Very well thought out kit. No pics and not as sophisticated as yours but my components are a flint & steel with charcloth in the tin (which I have used successfully), wooden matches in a waterproof container, a Zippo in a plastic bag (butane is better, I know..) and I’m always picking up shrivels and shreds of birch bark and bagging. Thankfully have never had to break them out for an emergency. Good off season topic.
