Did ya find any deer ?
in reply to: While doing This… #27466Excellent #1 .
Please refrain from mentioning chiggers. Simply the word or a thought will bring ’em on the run to my bony legs .
During spring turkey season , if I don’t use DEEP WOODS OFF the chiggers come in droves . Sounds like a herd of cattle comin’ thru the woods ,,,,then my wimpers turn into low wailing and a mixture of bloody fingernails .:D
in reply to: The ugly underbelly of "preserve" "hunting" #25302I have always believed these preserves were a disgusting tool for the person or persons with plenty of money and no ability to harvest a WILD animal . So they resort to a means that is lower than poaching ,,,,which is evidently provided by the same type persons who assemble such feed lot areas of mismanagement and disrespect of ALL wildlife ,,,all for filthy lucre .
in reply to: Dang Dr. Ashby Reports #25216I totally agree with the ASHBY reports and his findings. Read most , if not all of it last year for the first time and readily could understand the gains vs. the losses when utilizing high FOC.
I am presently shooting arrows that are far too heavy but can’t do anything about it at this time , being unemployed and a full time student . Hopefully , later on I will get a much lighter shaft and a heavier broadhead to achieve EFOC ; have a super quiet bow ; and obtain better EFFICIENCY from the bow .
Example of my FOC experience :100 grain Judo point and 2216 at around 14 % foc , would bounce and roll walnuts around the yard . Now a solid HAMMER blunt(250 grain plus 180 grain 30 cal. bullet) and same arrow at 24.8% foc litterally explodes walnuts .
My next step is to be rid of the fletching noise .
in reply to: Killed a Beautiful Bear Today! #25199not only is that a good looking bear , but that’s a fine lookin’ bow too
in reply to: made a clean shot #23465Well it’s been nearly a month since brother-in-law got his new Samick . He shot 40-50 arrows that evening and hasn’t had time since .
I just finished fletching his arrows and this afternoon he came by to assemble the broadheads . We finished up and he said he’d better get home . I asked ‘ Ain’t ya gonna shoot a couple ?’ He smiled and said , well ,,a couple .
He shot three arrows at about 12 yards . Any one would have been in the boiler room of a deer . I went to pull the arrows and set a walnut on top of the target . Pulled out one of my blunts and handed it to Glyn. As he loaded I kept reminding him to focus focus focus. His first arrow was just below the walnut. I pulled the arrow and again emphasised focus . He steadied , stared and released . 3 out of 5 were direct hits . Every time he’d go get that chewed up walnut and just look at it with amazement.
I know he’s hooked .

in reply to: deer bedding area #22992Yes sir ,,,CONGRATS!!
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #22167That’s a fine lookin’ recurve Ben .
in reply to: Canting the bow #22138I have read Freds ”INSTINCTIVE SHOOTINGII” many times .
What you said , Smithy , in your 3rd paragraph is spot on to how I do it too. I just noticed in recent days that if I cant the bow a bit more than I normally would it seems to bring everything into better alignment ,,,resulting in better and more consistent groups .
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #21871After the leaves drop and the greys spend more time on the ground hunting should improve . Hope to get in some good shooting while fall turkey hunting on the public land . I’ve seen as many as a dozen on the ground at one time ,,,probably less than a half acre .
Like the Eastern Turkey , those greys like the cedar, hardwoods transistions , which makes stalking a lot quieter .
in reply to: fur fletch #21847Do you mean they slow down rapidly like flu flu ?
Did you spiral wrap when attaching , or some other method ?
I am anxious to get some fur and do this myself . First thing I’ll do is weigh on my powder scale to compare weight of a strip for spiral and also 3 strips to attach in the ‘3 FLETCH’ fashion , and check weight against the 5.5 inch shield cuts I presently have mounted .
in reply to: cool air an' squirrels #21841I have heard of those red pineys . They are north of me about an hour or so . We have the fox and greys here . Mostly greys .
The greys here at present have put on the winter hair already ,,,,,as well as the deer .
I put an old fox squirrel in the slow cookin’ crock one time , with a can of Campbells cream of mushroom soup . Had it on low for the day while at work . Very tasty and tender as crappie !
We just had a front come thruough and the temps will be in the 70’s today and t’morrow . If I can get my chores done I hope to be in the woodlot this weekend . If my shooting holds up like the past couple days ,,,and can catch ’em on the ground I might just have the meat and some tails for my own FUR FLETCH test .
Deer seaon opens next Saturday. Except for buying the tag I am ready .
