in reply to: Not this year #15454
As always , Grumpy , your writing is interesting .
Calling deer as well as any species is rewarding . Learning it will take time but to me it is part of the fun . The more we know about a certain animals habits , body language and vocalizations the better we will be at successfully bringing them to the call. How critters utilize certain aspects of terrain , wind ,and cover plays into it as well . By knowing these things and using such terrain , cover and wind will increase your odds .
Also , by being able to produce animal vocalizations with your own voice box and mouth gives you more flexibility in the woods and reduces the number of actual callers you must carry .
With your talent with the wood you can also get into call making .
in reply to: A wife's perspective #15393Excellent read , Skinner . Personnally , I am anxiously waiting for the moving to come out . I’d pay well to see the ”LOOKS” that she gives you throughout the hunt.
in reply to: Predator Recurve? #13454I can’t offer any suggestions from experience ,,,but ! ,,,,they sure are easy to look at . Handsome bow .
in reply to: prescription glasses.? #9889I also have two pairs of perscription glasses . One is a set of frames that are over fifteen years old with large lenses, , ,nearly round. The other is a lot smaller , rectangle shape. Neither give me any trouble .
But , like Fallguy , I like brimmed hats . If the string touches anything during my draw the whole thing falls apart . So to keep the hat and eliminate the distraction I made a deer antler button and sewed the button to the crown and curled the brim up to the button . Like July Johnson said after he got his face burned ‘it’s easier to where it than look at it ‘.
I also shoot split finger and anchor middle finger in corner of mouth.
in reply to: cold weather shooting gloves #62995Truly sorry for your loss, Dave .
in reply to: Our Own Worst Enemy #61976I’ve never had any need for a GPS but after reading these post it now seems to be a very useful tool that I must have . The public land where I hunt also has its unfair share of unethical hunters .
in reply to: How many times per week do you hunt? #61967Usually I will hunt one evening during the week and hit it hard on the weekends . Last year I lost my job due to the plant closing its doors which allowed me to hunt every day . Now , this year I am a full time student which has prevented me from hitting the woods as much as I would like . But , I have Fridays and weekends .
Haven’t seen the first WhiteOak acorn here around home which could really effect the fall turkey hunting as well as the deer . Just have to put down the boot leather and cover a lot of ground to locate a flock .
in reply to: cold weather shooting gloves #60780Been using the Jersey’s for decades . Also , I have two shooting gloves . One works on the outside ,,,one on the inside , depending which glove I may use on any given day . Simply cut the 3 fingers off the Jersey .
During really cold weather I keep the button above my knife belt unfastened and just slide my hand inside my outside shirt . So far it has worked out great , though I may appear to have an injured arm in a sling while waiting on a cloven hoofed quadruped to come by .:D

in reply to: Judging Distances #58371This is an interesting topic . Since my first discovery of what we know as instinctive shooting thru GFAsbel back in the early ’80’s I have not had any concern about yardage ,,,I think . Having been raised with the gun and the bow and my Dad always challenging me to judge distance to make accurate shots on a variety of targets I now at a glance can know if any target is within my personal limits with the bow . It has become a case of not needing to know if it is 18 or 23 yards , but rather a case of that’s close enough .
More important to me is being able to give 100% concentration to the spot I want to hit . Not thinking about the distance or my form but locking my total vision and mental focus on the spot . At any time during the draw , hold and release if my focus drops off or my eyeballs twitch or even blink the whole thing falls apart.
Years ago I had a friend that shot wheels and sights. He was a good shot on known yardage shots . But when we went to the woods for some stump shooting he rarely connected and always became somewhat aggravated at my ability to connect without the use of sights . For me this is probably the most amazing part of shooting traditional bows .

Congrats ,,,,,,,,fine buck
in reply to: Backpack Seat #40316Paleoman , I have built just such an item as you have described . Grumpy started a thread in the CAMPFIRE FORUMS titled NOT GONNA WORK . It is on page 3 I think . There are two photos of my backpack seat , which I have named the GROUND HUNTERS PACK/SEAT. The first pic shows it in the seat position which is used by removing the pack ,,,flip it upsidedown and lean it against a tree , stump , log , large rock etc.
Under 6 lbs. empty ,I have a 100% cotton daybag on the frame .
