in reply to: Spring Turkey Hunt #23725

Turkeys ? Ain’t nothin’ like ‘TRICKIN’ OL’ TOM’,,,well , it’s a tie between watching the arrow hit the mark and fooling a turkey,,,very addicting .

I agree with the statement about the mouthcall . Hands free and effective . Though it is a task to master for many folks.

Decoys are not always effective and are over rated in my opinion. Besides , I want to be the one that deceives the bird .

Avoid open woods . Calling from a place that is clean of understory will allow the turkey to view your location from a long way off. He sees no hen or sees you move and he’s gone . I like to have enough cover that forces the bird to come looking . Here in Ohio a lot of spring hunters quit after the woods green up simply because it limits their being able to see through the brush . They are missing out on some fine action .

Soft hen yelping , soft clucks and purring .Also , gobbler clucks and 2-3 note gobbler yelps . Imitating the 3 and four stroke scratching is very effective as long as you are sure the bird can’t see your movement.

I have never killed a turkey with archery tackle . I did get an old bird to 12 yards and he walked behind the big cedar just as I had hoped he would so I could draw my bow . I know he could not see me or by bow but he heard my shirt sleeve as I drew . He never stepped out . He ran straight away keeping the cedar between him and me .

Keep in mind , you are not required to sit . My back no longer allows me to sit to a turkey . I simply stand and lean against the tree.

If during a hunt you decide to move to another area , always stop and throw out some soft calls from below a ridge top ,,,,Tom might be on the other side,,,,,I have made this mistake more often than I care to admit .

My Super Kodiak came with a Flemish string . Like you said , they are good looking strings . I spent a lot of time trying to get my bow quiet with the flemish . Padded limbs,,,several types of string silencers ,,,brace height . Went back to my home grown endless loop , with minimal twist and now she is very quiet .

The Bear Traditional Bow Owners Manual shows the Kodiak Magnum as a 52 inch bow with a brace height of 7-8 inches .

If you are using an endless loop string you can twist them too much , which will cause a noisy bow too.

Da’gum FINE lookin’ bow , SH. What is your draw length ? Reason for asking is for possible future references . I have a 30.75” draw and wonder if the Kanati would be too short for me.

Congrats on your ONE new bow :D.

I agree JamesG .Since childhood it’s been files and stones . Later in life I was introduced to the need for LEATHER as a finishing tool . I do use an antique STEEL on my knives which I follow with the leather .

For me , it’s been a learned skill ,,,like shooting the bow ,,,trickin’ ol’ tom with calling and a good set up ,,,woodsmanship.

I have a canoe but have yet to use it . But , I also built a steel frame across the bed of my old truck for carrying my recurve. The steel frame stays in the bed and the bow is placed in an oak cradle that attaches in about one minute by use of a 1.5 inch square plate and wingnuts on a permanent stud .

Now I have the canoe set up to use the same cradle to prevent my bow from being damaged .

The cradle mounts and removes in seconds and is presently holding the bow in the house ,,on a dresser .

Oak , woods screws , glue and self adhesive felt padding in the cradle cut outs to prevent marring the riser .

Been toting the PB&J’s for about 2 decades . Sometimes some grilled venison in a ziplock bag,,,,,,,,,,always water .

The way you see is how I see it too. Although I haven’t seen a TV hunting show in 15 years , I have seen the DVD’s . I began to see trends and techniques that just don’t sit well with me .

Being an avid turkey hunter of the OLD SCHOOL , it’s easy to see how so many companies are making videos to market their products . Now we have young and old hunters that are convinced that in order to KILL a turkey one must have ALL the latest turkey calls , camo , camo gun , blinds ,decoys ,,,,,,and a shotgun capable of killing a tom at 40+ yards .The list is nearly endless .

Woodsmanship doesn’t come into play for most ,,,at least that’s the way I see it .

I could say more but won’t.

Yes sir , Clay , I’d pay to see SH/Elkheart Show ,,,,,but I’m afraid there would be a sizable uprising , possibly resulting in a TAR N FEATHERIN’ from the modern high tech crowd.

Great video and hunt . Too bad about the ‘yotes and hind quarters.

It’s youth gun season here this weekend but archers are allowed to hunt providing they wear Blaze Orange.

My brother-in-law has one of those FUNNELS on his property and I intend to be there this afternoon . We saw two bucks and some does using it just before dark yesterday . They saw 8 this morning but took no shot .

They also heard 3 different flocks of turkeys so there could be some turkey action as well . Though I doubt there would be a shot since I’ll be wearing the Blaze. Ambushing could be a good possiblity but I won’t shoot a turkey I didn’t call .

Hopefully it will spread over the line into other states too.
